New Genre: Topical
We've added a new genre: "Topical". This is from the description:

"Primarily focuses on one major topic, such as the game Go in Hikaru no Go or bread making in Yakitate!! Japan"

Please help us update any series that seems to fit that description!

Update: It seems that people are seeing this category in a few different ways than I originally intended, so I'm going to suspend this until I figure out how to deal with that.

"Topical"? That sounds so cheesy as a label. XD I wonder if "theme" would have been a better label. (Well, maybe I don't really...)

Personally, if I saw that label on a manga I'd go "Eh?"

I just don't see how it helps for the genre area since aren't these genre labels also used as a search method?

A lot of mangas could fall under this category, maybe too many. Like, any manga that focuses on a single idea would take this.

I only meant it for series that have a specific actual, real life thing associated with them, for instance, Baseball is topical (if the entire series deals with baseball), tennis for prince of tennis, Go for hikaru no go, etc. Someone added "Yu-gi-oh" which would not be topical in the sense that I envisioned... so I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to word this a bit differently.

Manick, honestly I find this genre useless. It's very unclear to the reader and even more confusing to search a series under this genre. Specific subgenre like "Music", "Sports" or "Game" makes way more sense.

i agree with Xeronia that way more then half of the manga would be in that catagory.

and yet still there's no ShowBiz entertainment world music related genre's like these manga's
Skip Beat!, Honey Hunt, KaiKan Phrase, Ingenuo, Handsome Girlfriend, and ect.
ilike to read these type of manga but its hard to tell which will be like these.

To be honest, "topical" isn't what I suggested. Nor did I still care for my "profession" genre to be added.
I just thought it was funny, after the backlash I got, for it to be added.

What ur aim is to have mangas focused mainly on a single real life topic right...
so maybe u should call it something else

if not....then explain it better and like have a place that when u add a genre the description shows up underneath it or something.........since topical actually does fit the name:
similarly to "topical" comedian: comedian who uses relative real life specific subjects in his/her work like baseball, cooking, Dick cheney, police

the bad thing about this is that u might have to add a sub-genre section

I agree with most of the people here that say that it's too broad...

I don't know... I don't think it would help anything if it was added, and it seems really confusing tbh... The less confusion the better, isn't it?

what is its purpose?

It's not bad. There's quite a lot of manga dealing with multiple topic as well. And BLOOODY too many cant be call one or multi topics. like vampire Juji kai, what topic do you call it ? or yu yu Hakusho.

Topical is useful for sport manga and game (mmo, mmorpg) manga.

I think having more specific topics as genre, like sports, would be better. And I also think we should drop tragedy as a genre, cause it's too similar to drama

na tragedy is fine....

thread

» lily_kitty15 on April 17th, 2008, 12:50am

yea i agree with mystichead about tragedy if fine as a genre cuz drama and tragedy are way different since tragedy genre for me stands mostly for when people die in a story, drama is just is just ah ...um... will u know i rally cant think of anyting for the time. >o<

I guess tragedy would be a subtype of drama.

thread

It is similar to drama in some way but not so much that it's a sub-genre. How else can you describe Othello, Full Moon wo Sagashite and The Demon Ororon? Because those are true tragedies.

When I think of a "topical" manga, it kind of brings to mind a manga that is about current events and issues. (that would be kind of weird) But "themed" can be a definition for "topical", I guess... in the sense of "related to a topic".

thread

» poptart on April 17th, 2008, 1:20pm

i think it would be better to just have sports, music, cooking, etc than topical.

topical makes me think of salve that you would put on a burn.

sub genres, while seemingly uselees or viewed as clutter, actually help for searching for a manga.

like NANA is a shoujou comedic romance series however it is also about music. that is a theme/topic that is very strong in that series so it would have the music tag.

I think you should just add a number of new genres, insted of such an open one.. It can be anything, so go figure what you're looking for..

As others said, genres such as "music", (we have sports, so why not adding music.. ) I have seen some that can go really well with that.

If it's hikaru no go and yu gi ho- you can put "board games" - although that sounds really funny..~~

Why not use the simpler "dedicated", "specific" or "specialized" ?
