Small Site Layout Change
As you can probably tell, I widened the site a bit. Most people have monitors that are larger than 800x600 these days, so this shouldn't be that big of a deal to most of you. If you find something that doesn't look quite right (compared to how it did before), please report it to me (or post it somewhere...)

For those of you keeping track, yes, this is our first site design change in the history of MU (that's over 5.5 years). Since I suck at design (and hence, cannot fix the banner), I cheated, and made the right sidebar go up to the top of the screen. It opened a good spot for our totally awesome mascot, so I think it works. We'll see how people react ...

In case it doesn't quite look right, reload your page a few times. This should update your style sheets. Or just clear your cache

Update 1 Fixed bugs, also, I increased the size for author/series images, so they can be 300pixels wide now.
Update 2 Banner was extended so that it fits the whole width, so the search bar has moved back to its original place

Finally some change!
xD
Now how about that new layout, Manick? Eh, eh? ;D *nudge*

thread

» Scyfon on January 10th, 2010, 10:39pm

haha yeah!
How bout it xD

Also, in regards to the banner, why not get a temporary re-design before we go full revamp? I'm sure there are a bunch of members who could do a decent enough job =D

Well, he said he's got no design skills, Star... But I know you do. Maybe you could find the time to volunteer your abilities?

thread

» Scyfon on January 10th, 2010, 10:37pm

If this was facebook, I would've hit the Like button =D
Finally, the width of the site is bigger that 1/3 the width of my screen >=D

thread

» Scyfon on January 10th, 2010, 10:44pm

Also (another one xD )

Is the signature image width limit increased now or will it remain the same?

thread

Ohh good. I wasn't the only one wondering the same. >=D

thread

probably will be increased ... that's on the chopping block of things to do. I'm trying to take care of the major things first. please be patient.

i don't like the change... having the mascot on the right forces the search bar up and it just doesn't look right to me...

It looks better in the image you provided...

thread

» manic on January 10th, 2010, 11:10pm

I think that it looks better than what we currently see.

Personally I would just get rid of the "mascot", it serves no purpose and just clutters up the page.

thread

» manic on January 10th, 2010, 11:20pm

btw, when I mentioned getting rid off the "mascot" in my previous post I meant the stupid mutated Pikachu rip-off, not the word "mascot" lol

thread

No need to insult the mascot. .___. Blak worked hard on that.

I like the mascot...;___;

thread

» manic on January 10th, 2010, 11:26pm

Well it is a Pikachu rip-off.....

The whole concept of Manga Updates having a mascot (no matter what it looks like) is stupid, it serves no purpose

thread

» Scyfon on January 10th, 2010, 11:43pm

If you don't like it, GTFO.

The mascot is quite special to the old-timers.
It reminds us of the time when the forum really got together and put themselves out there to enter the mascot competition. It symbolizes a sense of community.
Just putting it down as purposeless and a "pikachu rip-off" is down right offensive.
Besides...what's so "pikachu-ish" about it anyways? The ears? well, you need to get out there and realize that there are many character designs with similar ears, not just pikachu.
Furthermore, considering your lack of activity on the forums, I don't see why you should even give a damn about the mascot.

I did write out a really long inflammatory post in response to your charming "GTFO" comment, but then decided not to actually post it because it wouldn't achieve anything other than giving the mods/admins something to do.

thread

» manic on January 11th, 2010, 12:14am

I thought I should just clarify a part of my previous post incase Scyfon starts ranting about me insulting the mods/admins.....

When I said this "wouldn't achieve anything other than giving the mods/admins something to do" I meant they would have to punish me in some way, I was not implying that they don't do anything (because I know that they do work hard).

I agree, too. Lower the right column down to the same height as the left column. It makes me want to literally push down the right column to make it even x-x;;

thread

» Sagaris on January 10th, 2010, 11:36pm

When the mascot title is removed, the mascot picture should be moved up a bit to fill in the gap left by the title's previous position

thread

» m64 on January 10th, 2010, 11:18pm

hey manick ^_^

if you want to keep it find someone to make a new banner that incorporates the mascot. i think having manga characters in the banner is biased towards certain mangas so having the mascot being the center of attention would be a lot better.

thread

Most likely...Manick, are you gonna work on the other parts of the site as well? since the gaps between columns in different parts of the site now looks too wide

thread

» eccentrrick on January 10th, 2010, 11:51pm

I like it! Although not much of a difference from the old, it's visually better. Hopefully, we'll get a larger (width) limit for image signatures (as BaeSooky mentioned :3.) With a few adjustments here and there, we can make this work. smile

thread

» ReaderM on January 10th, 2010, 11:55pm

I personally think test 2 looked the best.. keep it was that, having the search bar up and above the mascot is slightly inconvenient not going to lie

thread

» LordMelkor on January 11th, 2010, 12:04am

I realize I'm probably in the minority, but can you at least make it possible (like a selectable option) to compress the width on the "My Lists" page? The reason being, is that I used Mac's webclips to create a widget of the lists page, and I use it quite extensively, and with the increase in width, it becomes large to an unwieldy extent.

Switch the place of the mascot and the search bar. That'll put the search bar flush with the other sidebar, and look more design oriented and less corner cutting.

thread

Oops, posted before I read other comments. But I guess I just summarized that whole subject.

thread

» TKS on January 11th, 2010, 12:56am

Much better in terms of width. The mascot is a little odd though (not the drawing itself just where it's placed). Why don't you have a banner contest with theme colors? That way you don't have to do anything except pick your favorite or have the members vote. smile

thread

» kazuma7 on January 11th, 2010, 12:59am

thread

» CatzCradle on January 11th, 2010, 1:38am

Personally, I don't really like the new layout change.
I really dislike the new widening look and search placement. Were they really necessary? I thought the "in" look was to appear more compact and neat, which I found in the previous layout. I also dislike moving the search bar up since it feels like a total pain when the previous placement felt more natural.

thread

» CatzCradle on January 11th, 2010, 1:42am

just adding this since I couldn't finish before...
Before somebody else says something, I really mean no offense. And I also do appreciate Manick's effort in trying to implement some new changes. But sorry, this design... just doesn't look very good to me.

thread

» Scyfon on January 11th, 2010, 5:05am

but it's just making it wider by a few pixels none
Compact may be nice, but we've gotta get with the times. 800x600 is soooo last decade.

thread

» CatzCradle on January 11th, 2010, 1:47pm

Last decade was just 1 year ago! Lol. laugh

Though I feel it may be a bit wider than a "few pixels," it's enough to be really unpleasing to the eyes. Especially for people with big screen, everything just seems to be placed really awkwardly far apart. dead

thread

Also, so what if there weren't any changes for 5.5 years? Obviously something was right and good if you've been around for that long, ne? =) I've always love love loved it, and will continue to do so!

btw, it doesn't match in anyway with the site banner....

thread

thread

just a suggestion btw, instead of having the mascot linked to its creator's profile, can it be linked to the About Us page on the right tab? most visitors who happen to stumble upon this website will not have much knowledge of recent events or insiders' information, and therefore will not comprehend why BU mascot would lead to a member's profile...

maybe there could be a couple of lines crediting the creator of the mascot in the About Us page, instead?

thread

» lynira on January 14th, 2010, 3:44pm

Sorry to bother, but I just have a quick question about the change in size of author/series images.
Okay, so you know how, if the image submitted is larger than the allowed dimensions, it is automatically shrunk to the correct dimensions by the site? My question is, for these images, has the increase in the allowed dimensions caused them to automatically become larger (which I think would be the result if the case were that the site "remembers" the image in its original dimensions, but displays it at the allowed dimensions), or will all the images still (unless updated after the change) be shown at the previously allowed dimensions (which I think would happen if the site only "remembers" the image in its shrunken state)? The reason I ask is because I'm wondering if I should go "update" all the series images (well, where possible and appropriate) to their new allowed size, or if it's automatically been done already.

thread

» Manick on January 14th, 2010, 3:57pm

Yep, all images will have to be updated with larger sizes ... Thanks for the question!

thread

» Manick on January 14th, 2010, 4:08pm

I updated the author/series image widths again, so that they can be 400px tall, as well as 300 pix wide.

thread

» b1ue_wishes on January 15th, 2010, 1:02am

i actually prefer 300px tall, since 400px looks too big on my monitor (1280x1024). but i guess that just depends on the individuals' resolution. not complaining though, since they don't look tiny anymore. : )

also, i like how you put the mascot back on the left. the right and left columns' height match, and the right side doesn't look as cluttered since it already has a lot of text. things look much cleaner.

p.s. 'Propaganda' section is nicely named.

thread

» Toto on January 15th, 2010, 2:10pm

Also noticed that you added the "propaganda" to the series pages...
Was this to cover the costs for these improvements?

thread

» Manick on January 15th, 2010, 3:36pm
