Another Group Gone: KEFI
The group KEFI is also closing its doors. This one hits home a little more personally, as I've worked with them before on Mx0 with Ossu!. These guys will also be missed.

They will be missed indeed. Piano no mori was a fantastic manga. Hope someone else picks it up!

Couldn't the site owner just sell it? (The reason is a bit ridiculous, seems like a lack of fund.)
D**n readers, they kill every good group.... sad
And Mx0 was one of my favorites......
Thanks a lot for the hard work!

thread

» barbapapa on October 30th, 2011, 4:02am

The reason being that I never owned the group despite being about the last active member/administrator, so when the person who did own the group told me he wanted to use the domain for other (less illegal) purposes, I don't have much to say about it.

what kills a group isn't web issues ... it is usually lack of staff. You expect some turnover and if no one is there to take their place, the group dies.
Thus, if you don't want to see your favorite group die, perhaps learn Photoshop or Gimp (which is free)?

thread

» barbapapa on October 30th, 2011, 6:52am

More staff would have probably given me more incentive to keep going. Taking it someplace else wasn't a huge obstacle, but it is if you're the only one doing it.

yup, I agree that it how any group will just disappear. sooner or later, the last few remaining people will get fed up.

Damn. Feels like I read an obituary. Hope the people who worked on KEFI will keep on the scanlation scene if not get back together eventually. In any case, thanks for the hard work scanlating.

i remember when most of the release i was getting were from kefi, but i didnt know what happened to it. i just looked at the translation page for them, and for me the group died around 09/21/07

its sad, but its a "natural" progression.

thread

» barbapapa on October 31st, 2011, 5:31am

For me the group started at that date ;p

Seriously, the only scanlation teams that will survive will have their own online reader. Those who only offer downloads will be beaten by the big online viewers

thread

» barbapapa on October 31st, 2011, 11:07am

That has literally zero to do with anything.

thread

» Sircus on October 31st, 2011, 12:33pm

Usually comes down to money...

thread

» jojo_da_crow on October 31st, 2011, 4:53pm

Actually no it usually comes down to lack of staff.

thread

» archknight on October 31st, 2011, 6:20pm

so true, the cost of running a group can be free nowadays.
running site on a blog site, using batoto as reader, mediafire as free host, lots of public shitty quality raws. But if no one to work on the series than all those benefits become useless

thread

» Sircus on November 1st, 2011, 9:50am

Its true that there are free solutions, but alot of scanlation teams dont use them. (More and more are though) If KEFI was making a profit from adds and donations then I doubt it would close down regardless of release pace. With surplus cash you can actually buy the service if you are missing a vital part of your team while you recruit.

thread

» barbapapa on November 1st, 2011, 10:54am

What, buy staff?

thread

» Sircus on November 1st, 2011, 5:23pm

So for you it comes down to that scanlation teams must loose money? Else they arent holy? Or is the scanlation act that is holy for you? You are one funny person

thread

» jojo_da_crow on November 1st, 2011, 5:51pm

Wow... just wow. You are exactly what is wrong with scanlation these days. If it isn't turning a profit we should just close the doors eh? Or if we are making money (which is hilarious that you think groups are pulling in the big bucks) we should just never stop.

Man the 800 volumes I have bought on my own and scanned for various groups... I was doing it all wrong all that time. I mean screw caring about a hobby and series. I should be in this for the "fame" and money right?

thread

» Sircus on November 1st, 2011, 6:48pm

Haha, you noob, nothing wrong with the reasons you stated. Perfectly normal what you wrote. However I hate your more then holy attitude that it cant be the other way around.

thread

» jojo_da_crow on November 1st, 2011, 7:05pm

Well I will admit you got me above. I fell for the troll.

However, you won't get me again in this thread at least. Have fun trying to get a rise out of anyone else. =P

The community, it's dying. Am I glad for that? Nope. Am I going to blame somebody for it? Not yet.
Shit happens, especially when you've been in the game for too long. See you, guys, I appreciate what you've done.

I occasionally visited Kefi for a lot of Reborn scans before it got insanely popular and picked up by hundreds of other groups. They had a lot of great projects under their works, 'The world is mine' and 'Piano no Mori' are very popular to this day. The most credited member is probably Barbapapa or Ocean, I find myself running into Barbapapa around Livejournal, Mangahelpers and especially on Mangascreener. He was also someone who introduced me to Pyuu to Fuku! Jaguar, in which I tried countless times to work on.

I'll miss this team.

I remember reading mx0 and following it every chapter few years back. I been very busy myself also with work and school but let it be known all your efforts translating those mangas is very much appreciated and brought happiness not only to me but to a lot of people I'm sure.

Thanks!
