New Poll - Looking Your Age
This week's poll comes from the mind of KaoriNite. Sometimes characters look (and/or act) older or younger than they actually are. Like a small kid having the wisdom of a grandpa. What's your opinion on that? And for once, I have a "Don't care" option.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Assuming you didn't read the prequel, would you read its sequel?
Choices:
Read prequel first, then I'd decide about the sequel - votes: 9523 (76%)
Read the sequel first - votes: 408 (3.3%)
I'd read both eventually, but order doesn't matter - votes: 2430 (19.4%)
I dislike sequels - votes: 169 (1.3%)
There were 12530 total votes.
The poll ended: July 14th 2012

Go in order!

I wish it was 2 polls, how one looks and how one acts. I don't have a problem with characters not acting their age too much. However, it annoys me to no end when all characters are not drawn age appropriately. Like when you have everyone look like they are in high school even the adults. Or like how everyone has the same face but different hair and the old guys have mustaches which is supposed to make them look old even though they have young faces.

i agree with you, cuz in real life we dont always act according to our age either so that's no problem but looks on the other hand - no, one should look his/her age embarrassed

I'm on the fence, it's ok if it's just a few characters, sometimes people just don't look their age, but if all the high schoolers look like they're in preschool then yeah, it's a problem. I myself look a lot younger then I actually am, by more then 5 years (I managed to get the child's price on movie tickets when I was 18) Despite being the ripe old age of 25 I'm still frequently mistaken for a high schooler.

Pet peeve, definitely! 17-year-old boys who look like they're in their 30's; older women who are lolis. If it were just once or twice, it would be OK, but you see it everywhere dead

Yeah, it annoys me.

Sometimes, I understand that it's part of the joke. Like in Medaka Box, where Zenkichi's mum looks like a child. That kinda stuff I don't mind.

Most of the time though, it does annoy me. I tend to forget their age nowadays anyway. Unless stated in some way, I can't figure it out XD

This..

Although I guess mostly I don't care.. Well, it bugs me more when they don't look their age rather than if they don't act their age (which I don't mind at all tbh) but if it's a joke or written into the plot rather than just an incompetent artist I don't mind. Er.. Yeah, I think that's right. >.>; Stupid tendency to talk in circles. D:

Didn't we had a thread about this?

i'm gonna quote the answer i give there

What happen to the "i could't care less" option?

Jk. All the cases annoy me. 14 looking 25, 50 looking 18, 500 looking 10, it all suck...

But i try not to pay attention to it.

funny fact, there is a "Don't care" option here.

Yay I was finally chosen! Cool. Even though I did kinda already make a thread about this.

Anyways, I just really hate when characters don't look their age in romances. I don't want to see an adult guy falling for an adult girl who looks like a kid because then I'm thinking the guy is a secret pedophile. And I don't like the reverse either, when a character falls for someone who looks like an adult but is really an elementary school kid.

thread

» Myuym on July 14th, 2012, 5:02am

I dislike it when 12year olds are looking the same as adults.
Also I dislike the ages (too young) given to characters often. But if the age is not important, in most cases it doesn't matter, I will just mentally correct it.

This. I used to love DNAngel. thought it was top stuff...when I was about 10/11 about 8 years ago. I re-read it a few years ago and realised 'wait a minute...I'm really expected to believe that a bunch of 12/13/14 year-olds are running around and doing all this?'
This was also what I disliked most about Gungrave. Big Daddy and Maria's daughter, Mika, is only 12, I think. But she's made to look and act around 16 at least. Her being 13 just made her seem like a whiny brat (granted her parents were killed >.>...but you know what I mean. And I realise the anime was adapted from a game so it's not the anime creator's fault).

» Oriolidae on July 14th, 2012, 5:03am

Don't care. The reason why might be that I seemingly don't look my age either. It really depends on the story and how the art works. Sometimes the "they don't look their age" can work for the better of the manga, sometimes it doesn't.

thread

» mizaki2100 on July 14th, 2012, 5:10am

The age thing doesn't really matter. I couldn't care less if a 50 year old looks like 12 year old or 16 year olds looking like 23. But what annoys me the most are middle schoolers who have massive 20lbs breasts. Those are cringe worthy.

thread

» Slashout on July 14th, 2012, 12:02pm

I am tired of the the 8 years old lolis suposed to be 18+.

Jusr give the characters an appropriate appearance for their age, or an appropriate age for their appearance. Don't just draw a loli for the lolicons and try to play it off by saying it's a mature character.

thread

» atem4yami on July 14th, 2012, 12:23pm

the only time i get upset about it is when it's a yaoi and the seme looks like a kid (or is ultra-bishie) while the uke is an ultra-butch macho-man 10 to 30 years older. otherwise i don't care, no matter the genre.

I don't really care, except when it is overdeveloped elementary or middle school children, or teenage loli-like characters (or even older) who are over sexualized.

thread

» Nirhtuc on July 14th, 2012, 6:59pm

YES! I hate it! IMO it's just a way to try and get around using shota/loli characters. I especially hate it when the dominant character in a relationship happens to be younger than the submissive one, but wow- the older one happens to look like a chibi for some reason! Dislike! no

thread

» Yenoh on July 15th, 2012, 1:42am

The only one that ever blew my mind with not looking their age would probably be Wolf Guy - Ookami no Monshou, but that's it. The rest I guess I just don't mind.

thread

» whitespade on July 15th, 2012, 12:21pm

it's not that i actively hate and shunned works like that, but i still choose the first option because i think it is lazy writing and/or underdeveloped art skill. some mangaka have a problem drawing diverse character design that have characters looking their age but are still interesting, so they mask it by having everyone looking like teenagers or young adults and hand waved the young appearance of the older adults as having good genes. or they want to portray innocent characters but don't know how to draw appropriately and fall back to tired visual cues like extra large eyes and extra small mouths making the characters look really young.

if the character's shtick is looking very different from his age, it is acceptable, and there might be some good dramas and comedies from it, but if it is because the mangaka just sucks at drawing it become quite tiring.

» SAimNE on July 15th, 2012, 8:28pm

I love it when it is intentional. I'm assuming that is included here. On the other hand I abhor it when the person looks 5+ years different, and its never brought up. Its funny when chars are confused by it, but if something that is so unusual is just accepted in a glance by everyone, it annoys me.

I don't really care either way. I think the only time it annoyed me was in Prince of Tennis. The difference between the appearance of the first years and second/third years was mindblowing. O_o

15-year-old men and 30-year-old lolis alike.

thread

» giinko on July 16th, 2012, 7:17am

Well it depends, if it's on purpose like Mushashi or Kid in Eyeshield 21 then I think it's cool. If the setting is some vomiting queasy plot or if the artist is incapable of drawing properly then yes, it's hella annoying.

thread

» Dalilt on July 16th, 2012, 7:44am

Usually I don't mind. No ones looks the same.

However I hate it when the protagonist is only a grade school or a middle school and looks like an adult. I understand the want to make the protagonist younger in order to prove a point or because it won't work with others ages. But make them look like it. They can act like adults if they want, just not look.

But when a older character looks younger it doesn't bother me.

thread

» Hitokage on July 16th, 2012, 9:09am

It bothers me to a degree. Like when I cannot tell the parent from the child because they look they same age. However, I understand that the shoujo genre thrives on the big-eyed sparkly characters. To each their own. I find it is not that big of an issue with what I read on a daily basis.

thread

» Darkwap on July 16th, 2012, 9:40am

I do hate it. Its just gets a bit weird when reading the manga if an adult looks like a kid and a kid that looks like an adult. If the characters personality doesn't fit with their age as well, that is also quite annoying.

thread

» RiK.dfs on July 18th, 2012, 8:01am

Yeah.
It's really an annoying pissoff when all 13 year old brats looks like they're 19-20.
Not to mention the 10-13 year old girls who have the appeal of 18.

When it's done just for a specific character while fitting with that one character's profile.....then it's fine.

thread

» Browine on July 16th, 2012, 6:54pm

Re-reading Eyeshield 21 it's bothers me to no extent. At first I was okay, it didnt bother me at all. But now picking it up after a few years. Yes. Why are grown men playing Highschool football. It would make so much sense if Eyeshield was placed in College. If your able to grow a sexy full beard (lookin at you Musashi and Sakuraba) then you might be to old. :/ That my opinion.

thread

» That3rdGuy on July 16th, 2012, 7:39pm

YES! It drives me crazy! Kids that are 14 or something (middle school usually or first year high school students) are either too mature looking or act it. Then there are the girls with massive tits, which is just about every girl in the school. And in Japan, most girls are still mostly flat-chested at that age, but manga would like you to believe all the girls have huge tits. Then there are the huge, muscular, athletic prodigies and sometimes scrawny but insanely strong kids. It annoys me to no end. It's horribly unrealistic (yeah, it's a manga, no shit) but it seems like many mangakas strive for realistic looking people, aside from the hair. Elementary school girls even have tits half the time, which is perverted on the mangakas part. They always either look too young or too old for their age. I've dropped many series for that reason alone. I like real looking people, not some school full of 14-year-old girls with DD tits or bigger, which doesn't exist anywhere. no

For me, characters looking older than they actually are is a bigger problem. Sera from Kore wa Zombie desu ka... in the anime, her character design looks like an onee-san. And I think that her seiyuu's voice is a bit too deep and mature-sounding. As a result, I assumed she had a body type of someone in her 20's and was not a serious candidate for romance... Now that I've seen her illustrations and characterization in the light novel, I realize she's a cute and awesome tsundere who has a nice compatibility with Ayumu... yet it's still hard to get the "onee-san" image out of my head. cry

I used to dislike characters who appear too young, but I got used to it. Once I did, I liked Shana a lot more; her atmosphere is mature. Ah, but after reading the Zero no Tsukaima light novel, I realized that the anime character design of Louise had ruined my sense of romance... she's more beautiful and charismatic in the light novel, yet she comes off as cute and immature in the anime.

Kyoto Animation went out of their way to make Itsuki younger and Mikuru more beautiful for the second season of Haruhi, and I wish other anime studios had the same courage/humility.

Edit: Oops, this wasn't meant to be a reply to a specific post within the thread.

Guess I'm a little late to this one. Yes, I agree that it can get annoying at the extremes, especially with some of the loli/shota stuff I've seen, but most of the time it doesn't bother me much. Perhaps it's partly that while I'm in my mid-thirties, most people think I'm much younger. As in, if I'm out with my teenage nephews, people assume I'm under 18. And I don't wear makeup (just sunblock), and I dress in business suits most of the time. I don't speak like a teen, I don't dress, drive, or act like a teen, but I still get carded left and right... what the heck?

And about 12 year olds looking like adults: does this count? I, at age 25, with my younger brother under 20, went to a restaurant. The waitress offered my brother the wine list and asked me if I needed the kids' (under 12) menu. WTF?!?!
