New Poll - Favorite Character Type
This week's poll comes from our member PinkShippuden. The given list of character types is not exhaustive, but just choose the one that you like best. Come on, you gotta at least like one of those character tropes... (although yes, some of them are cliche)

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Do you gasp, squeal, curse, etc. when you read manga?
Choices:
Always - votes: 1909 (14.3%)
Most of the time - votes: 1938 (14.5%)
Sometimes - votes: 3990 (29.8%)
Rarely - votes: 2115 (15.8%)
Never out loud - votes: 1878 (14%)
Never at all - votes: 1540 (11.5%)
There were 13370 total votes.
The poll ended: September 7th 2013

Excluding the winning "Sometimes" option, it seems the rest of the choices are pretty evenly split. Not a common occurrence... *gasp*

How is that the dense/air headed one is the genius type?

I'm guessing it means something along the lines of the "absentminded professor" trope.

Well, in manga, "genius" may not necessarily be books smart. Maybe he's a genius in, like, tennis or something.

thread

» zeusosphere on September 9th, 2013, 4:59am

They could be dense/air-headed with regard to daily life/social situations but be geniuses otherwise (eg. Rukawa in Slam Dunk!, L from Death Note, Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club, possibly also Tsukasa from Tokyo Crazy Paradise...)

i choose the last one, since i like my characters with brains, and usually to show them off is by plotting some scheme or other. i like arrogant characters with basis, like the mc in zippy ziggy and Kyou kara Ore wa!!. the type that will kick you to the dogs to give them chance to run away.

the most hated character is the happy-go-lucky, big eater, nakama first hot head that spew off arrogant claims without anything to back them up.

I like the strong and stupid ones (like Dukchill Kim from Zippy Ziggy).
Also why aren't their any options of strong people?

This poll is to vague some choses are by looks, character and origin. It's like choosing between apples and potatoes... confused

This poll reads like it was created by a 15 year old yaoi fangirl.

The choices are really lacking, but I guess there's only so much you can cover with 15 options.

I choose the noisy, stubborn & hotheaded, aka TSUNDERE wink

Nooo... where's the psycho killer? I like Akabane Kuroudo and Hisoka....

I always root for characters who are helpful, kind, and cool since that is the kind of person I strive to be everyday.

Voted for "Scheming Plotter" since those kind often bring refreshing story or sometimes amaze me with what they did.

I really want...
naughty, strong ,scheming plotter aka clever
naughty as in those troublesome individual that likes to make trouble

The worst is hot-headed, know-nothing-noob

good-looking sure become the main factor first before intellect..

I wholeheartedly agree with you!

» Cthylla on September 7th, 2013, 7:42am

Where's the shy and awkward option? Also I agree with the above poster.

thread

» Nyajinsky on September 7th, 2013, 9:09am

tsundere.

But I think it depents on the actual manga. It happens often, that I like the noisy comic relief, but in other works I hate that one the most, so...

thread

» Oddwaffle on September 7th, 2013, 9:12am

Yeah, the scheming plotter type always make the story interesting. Too many fake 'smart' characters, we need real smart, clever, stoic and prudent type.

thread

» AceBunneh on September 7th, 2013, 9:26am

Hm.. My favorite character type.. That's difficult. Honestly it depends on how well written they are.. Dx
But let's see..
Maybe shy and awkward.. Or maybe depressed and given up on life, but puts up a fake front?
Or intelligent liar, calculating, but secretly compassionate?
Really I think you can just throw a lot of different adjectives describing personality together, randomly grab 3-5 and it could be interesting..

Erm, what's the description for Munsu's character from Shin Angyo Onshi?

thread

» ughman on September 9th, 2013, 2:02am

anti-hero, in the choice The horrible, mean, & bad attitude one

thread

» mysstris on September 7th, 2013, 11:13am

This one is hard since the favorite type of character of mine isn't up there. My key word, Ambition. But other than that, it's easier for me to say what my favorite type is not and depending on what type of manga it is (genre wise). Self sacrificing isn't so bad either but a mary sue ain't that great....In a shoujo manga, ambition is key but an absolute no would be something like, simply an example, a completely pathetic crybaby stupid heroine as well as a perfect prince character (such a fake). As for a shounen, I think as long as s.the main character has ambition of some sort, it wouldn't matter to me so much what type of person he is. Can't decide from the provided options. I shall decline to vote.

thread

» Sapphire07 on September 7th, 2013, 12:52pm

I find this poll a bit too hard to vote on, since all my favorite characters probably have nothing in common with one another.

thread

» imercenary on September 7th, 2013, 1:08pm

Some of the choices are REALLY weird.

"The ugly character"? Wtf?

thread

» forgottenone666 on September 7th, 2013, 3:29pm

I went with "The sensitive but melancholic one" mostly because it's the type of character I can relate with the most.

thread

» renseih on September 7th, 2013, 4:07pm

I went with "The sensitive but melancholic one" cause I like my chars with a sad past, but it'll mean nothing if he's useless and doesn't have the looks. XD

thread

» That3rdGuy on September 7th, 2013, 4:16pm

It's a tie between the quiet, good-looking one and the scheming plotter because those are the ones I can see myself as and relate to the most. I really don't like those from shounen because they're usually have exaggerated personalities. Yup...

I am surprised they haven't done a poll like this yet. Much better than the crappy ones they've had lately.

thread

» quark1020 on September 7th, 2013, 7:25pm

Definitely the quiet, stoic types. It makes putting them in funny situations all the more hilarious. Extra points if the mangaka can manage to have the character express emotion while still having a poker face.

As for good looking, well, its in the eye of the beholder, as they say.

thread

» gwkimmy on September 7th, 2013, 11:32pm

actually i enjoy a lot of these tropes. add a creative and well written dimension to them and they become instant faves. obviously these tropes cannot stand on their own.

i guess if i HAD to chose one it would be the scheming plotter, those make for interesting wrenches in plans.

the only ones i really dont enjoy are the bad attitude one (overplayed much?), genki, and the melancholic one (EMOOOO).

thread

» bibisuki on September 8th, 2013, 8:37am

It was a bit hard for me to choose, cause I´ve got more than just one favorite type of character.

But in the end I chose "The quiet, stoic, and good-looking one". Cause somehow I want to be little like that. But more important, cause they are really needed in the story, they make everything funnier and interesting ^^

thread

» KaoriNite on September 9th, 2013, 1:36am

my favorite character isn't listed: the weak, but smart character who learns from past mistakes and becomes strong

thread

» kuroihikari on September 9th, 2013, 5:34am

Mine is quite complex : for a male, it would be a mean one with horrible attitude towards everyone, but his way of acting would actually be in good intentions. He would be cold to anyone.

For a female, in can't choose at all, Iike a lot of types here.

thread

» Aijin-of-Iwa on September 9th, 2013, 6:04am

My favourite type of character (male) is the hyperactive but cool and funny one. Though they might come off as lame to the other characters. Somewhat like Yuki's brother from Fruits Basket or Tamaki from Ouran.
My (female) favourite is the serious and calm one that can surprise you with anything. Like Hotaru from Gakuen Alice or Takano from School Rumble.

Where's the "funny, laidback and down-to-earth" type sad

thread

» BlackOrion on September 11th, 2013, 8:49pm

From the list i went with The quiet, stoic, even tough i don't really care about the good looking part, but my favourite one would be a Wrathful character, maybe emotionless most of the time but snapping for almost nothing and going on a rampage.

We don't have enough mad characters on manga.
