New Poll - Scanlation Team
As suggested by Sapphiresky, we haven't done a similar poll since late 2005 (before we had weekly polls)! Back then, we had these results:

Question: Are you part of a scanlation team?
Choices:
Yes - votes: 486 (14.6%)
I want to be! - votes: 1163 (34.8%)
No - votes: 1691 (50.6%)
There were 3340 total votes.
The poll ended: November 26th 2005

Let's see what happens this time! For me, I used to be a very active proofreader and QCer, but I haven't done anything in the last 5-ish years. College makes you very busy... MU is the only contribution I make to the scene nowadays.

Edit, as Sapphiresky just pointed out to me, we actually did this back in 2009 also:
Question: Do you work in scanlations?
Choices:
Yes, and I love it - votes: 837 (9.3%)
Yes, and I hate my life - votes: 236 (2.6%)
No, but I'd like to - votes: 4430 (49.3%)
No, and I don't want to - votes: 2288 (25.5%)
I used to, but not anymore - votes: 760 (8.5%)
I'm just here to hand out C&Ds - votes: 436 (4.9%)
There were 8987 total votes.
The poll ended: May 2nd 2009

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Aggregate sites (Batoto, MangaHere, MangaFox, MangaReader, etc)
Choices:
I only use them to read manga (100%) - votes: 4936 (40.9%)
I use them more often than not (75%) - votes: 3416 (28.3%)
I use them half the time (50%) - votes: 1190 (9.9%)
I seldom use them (25%) - votes: 1744 (14.4%)
I never use them (0%) - votes: 795 (6.6%)
There were 12081 total votes.
The poll ended: March 14th 2014

Oh, how the world has changed in the last few years, for good or for ill

The "easiest" in terms of qualifications is the proofreader. You just need to be fluent in English. No knowledge of other languages necessary. Though that position tends to fill up pretty quickly.

The next easiest (in terms of qualifications) would be a typesetter/editor. If you have photoshop and know how to use it, great. But even if you don't, you can always download GIMP (free) and learn that way. There's lots of guides online as to how to edit/typeset manga. (My preferred one is Kalendel's Idiots Guide). But even then, I've also seen quite a few groups who are willing to train editors. (Provided you're capable of taking instruction). Just take a look at the recruitment section of the forums, and look for groups that train.

Naturally, if you know another language, especially Japanese/Chinese/Korean/etc, you'll be in slightly more demand. But obviously, you don't just "pick up" a language in a matter of weeks (let alone translate).

Generally, there's a greater emphasis on staff that are committed, irregardless of skill level. I'm kind of a flake... so I just do "freelancing." xD

I want to do editor or typesetter, I've been wanting to take the test. But just a month ago or so my laptop was formatted and I don't have photoshop ever since.. expecting to buy an adobe pack since I need flash and others too just for fun.. (many proofreaders are there already)
But I don't really know the standard of qualified. Do you need to be able to redraw or is there a redrawer? (i guess it depends)

Well, most people just download a cracked Photoshop. And yeah, usually you're expected to do at least basic redraws as an editor. But your group of choice should be teaching you, only the really big groups can afford to recruit only people who are skilled already.

Once, though it's really a misunderstanding at first. I told them I could freelance with no given promise and probably for a short period of time, but they interpreted it as "I will join your group permanently and I will promise a release." But meh, it wasn't too active, just one of those new groups that die within a few weeks, with or without any releases. I did do quite a bit of work, but in the end it got cut off with internet problems on my side if I remember correctly. Group page disappeared before I knew it.

I do want to join a group eventually, if I can find the right place. For now I'm just working on my own when I feel like it. Pro is that there's no rush, and I get to choose whatever manga I want lol. Con is that... there's no one to discuss with when I have a prob with one of the translations, and a lot of work... Tried to create a new group a few times, with a dif sort of concept whereas instead of who's in charge of what manga/chapter, we do the parts we want and keep the pages in cloud, not quite a lot of interest though. Then again, that group, didn't offer me an ounce of help. = = Complained it was too confusing when I tried to put the possibilities on there and let the editors choose... I DID tell them I have no experience in a group. -sigh- Well, it didn't help that I was the only Japanese translator that's for that moment active.

Cleaner/Redrawer. I prefer redrawing to cleaning though. Cleaning gets boring after a while.

I have always wanted to give it a shot, and feel that I could benefit from learning to do a bit of editing as well, considering the fact that I work with satellite imagery in uni, but the main problem has always been time, I just have too much to do to be able to take on anymore work, perhaps in the summer I might give it a shot.

thread

» nightazday on March 15th, 2014, 7:03am

I heard before that the main problem with scanlations is not the lack of translators but the lack of skilled editors. That the best way to help scanlators is not taking a year or so to learn Japanese but a few weeks to learn gimp or photoshop.

That and you can edit the scanlations that really needs re-editing like the middle half of GTO.

thread

» archknight on March 15th, 2014, 7:28am

I myself don't think its hard to release a chapter that is in readable quality.
The problem is finding someone who will keep on translating it and a fixed editor for it

*edit and there is always a lack of translator for a series

I can only speak for our group, but we have much more trouble finding translators than any other roles. Especially good translators that don't quit after 1 week. We don't expect translators to be fully fluent, but the translations you get sometimes are... very far from the original text.

Same can be said that a group won't go round without a translator, but can somewhat make it without an editor. I'm sure there's many people who would prefer a sucky edited release to no release at all, though it's definitely not desired. But I get what you mean, it just doesn't feel as good reading a yellowed photo of a manga page, with white blocks and Arial as font... and horrid jpg quality not to mention small image size with two pages squeezed in. Yes, I get what you mean, definitely. Gotta appreciate the editors/typesetters/cleaners and whoever else.

I also want the famous

>I don't time to scanlate but lots and lots of time to read the scanlations and complain if the next chapter is taking time because there's no scanlators to do it.

I find this Manga Poll quite lacking in options to choose from. bigrazz

Edit: 51.2% - No, since I don't feel qualified
ROFLMAO, thanks for proving me right. More options needed, since they only have to choose between: the feeling of not qualified and not wanting to. XDDDDDDDD

I've been in and out of dozen's of groups. I run Mad Hatter Scans right now. But I'm thinking about retiring from the scene pretty soon. I can't run a group with no staff, and I just don't have time anymore. Real life is kinda taking over. Though I might still freelance if a series catches my eye.

A group of online friends I met at a manga forum made a scanlation site, and I helped around as an admin and as a proofreader, since I'm fluent in Spanish, I offered to help translate from Spanish-English if it was necessary, but the group quickly disbanded and since then I haven't joined a scanlation group.

I applied for the position of English-Spanish translator in an anime website, but I never heard back, which means that they rejected me. How dare they?! >__>
Lol.

But anyway, I used to be a cleaner/typesetter for Yakuza on Detective Conan back in the day, then later I did some cleaning for Manga-Rain mostly on Bleach, and a little Soul Eater. Some of those magazine scans redrawing ate a portion of my sanity. I'm done. For now at least biggrin

I've always wanted to try but I'm not sure if I have what it takes. I know my way around Ps and GIMP and I'm fluent in English but I still procastinate. Yes... but we haven't updated in awhile. ;_; There are only two of us (my best friend and I), but we've managed to get out some releases! biggrin I was in charge of cleaning and typesetting, and she did translations and proofing. I don't use Photoshop since I don't have it (I use a cheaper, older program), and I kind of suck at cleaning/redrawing, but since we worked on full-color webcomics, it wasn't a huuuuge issue. I kind of just taught myself what I needed to know, so my methods are probably all wrong, lol, but our releases don't look too shabby, and they're definitely readable, so there's that. xP

So yeah, currently inactive right now, but I'd really like to get back into it once I graduate this spring. eyes

I answered yes for the current poll. Although assignments are really slow especially for proofreader/translator/typesetter part; while cleaner can just do on their own as long as they have the raws.

thread

» Karuna on March 19th, 2014, 3:59pm

I'm in more than one group, I clean sometimes and typeset some other times...
I do it because, because I like it, because if no one helped the groups no one would be able to read their releases and because I hate when I'm not able to read the ending of a manga because the scanlation group has closed because it had no staff.
And I think that it's incredible that there's only a 6.7% said yes, I think that people should think about getting into a group if they want groups to keep having releases.
I'm not telling you to start learning japanese but learning how to use Photoshop isn't so difficult, at first I didn't know how it worked either, if you have little time there are a lot of groups that need typesetters and being a typesetter doesn't take as much as the time as being a cleaner, there are the "actions" on Photoshop that can help you save a lot of time, and not all the groups have timelines.
