New Poll - MU Years
Technically this poll would be better suited in a couple of months (July 20, to be precise), but hey, I want in on this! Since early 2005 for me. Man, it's been a long time... Those high school days, lol.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How likely are you to continue watching an anime series once you notice that it diverges from the original manga plot (non-filler episodes)?
Choices:
Would keep watching until the end - votes: 2152 (19.4%)
Keep watching until it sucks too much - votes: 6239 (56.3%)
50/50 chance I'll continue - votes: 1630 (14.7%)
Stop watching immediately - votes: 377 (3.4%)
I don't watch anime anyways - votes: 688 (6.2%)
There were 11086 total votes.
The poll ended: May 31st 2014

If you ever make something, make sure it's good.

I do know i started making manga list here back in 2010 and i had been visiting this site for a while before that, but i don't exactly how long i have been coming here.

I wanna say since 2007 since that's when I first started getting into the online manga scene. Although I never bothered with making an account back then since I was too much of a lurker.

Lol, I read it the next time.
So, will something special happen that? Would groups release a special birthday release present or something... (hint) smile

Does MU get a new skin after 10 years?

At one point in time, we were working on a new skin. Then real life called and some programming staff left... sigh...

I think for me it was 2008... I made an account in 2009, but I had been lurking for quite some time before that. I've been registered to many manga related websites and forums, but I always stopped posting after a few months. MU is the only site that I've been visiting regularly for that long.

Probably since 2004-2006, I have no idea exactly. I only made an account several years ago when I started having trouble keeping track of my manga. I do remember using this site when we could still download by clicking on the little button next to the release name. I do know for sure I that I was introduced to this site when someone posted a link on the news page on the anime version of this site.

Thats your "joined" date, not when you 'first' started visiting.

Personally, I'd known about and been visiting MangaUpdates LONG before my join date but I rarely sign up for websites and/or throw away/make new accounts. My profile says I 'joined' in 2010 (lolno) so I bumped it back to 2009.

That said, it always amuses me how so many people will always claim they've been with something since the beginning. 10% has been with MU since 2004 but 5% since 2005? BS.

thread

» Pionfou on May 31st, 2014, 2:26pm

I guess it's kind of like a default option for those who don't have a clue when they started using the site? All I know is that's it's been a long time.

Love Hina was the first series I read online, I think the year was 2002. Gods knows how I even found that site. I even read volumes that weren't out in bookstores yet! (Imagine that.) It'd be a year or more before I really got into scanlations. Once I did, I'd binge read Hikaru no Go, Flame of Recca, I"s, etc.

It's harder for me to place when I started vising MU. With certainty I can say it was before 2007. I remember when the list feature came out and I thought it was worthless. Who would want to keep a tally of what they'd read? (But I guess when you follow 100s of series it starts to become useful.) I recall using the site for a significant period of time before that. Not sure how long is a significant period of time is for a high schooler but I'd say at least a year.

I guess I was one of those that voted 2004 that should probably have voted 2005. On the other hand, I do remember using a similar site before MU (Daily Manga I think it was called; edit: nope Manga Jouhou) before settling on MU so maybe I was here from the beginning?

I used to staff for Manga Jouhou (or I knew it as Manga News) too, before it got hacked and defaced. And Daily Manga was one of the best resources for scanlations before 2004. Very good historical data there.

In that case, isn't it better to make the poll "How soon did you join after you first started visiting MangaUpdates?".
Expecting people to track those dates is kinda silly - unless there was something personally memorable around the time of joining, no way will anyone remember them.

thread

» imercenary on June 1st, 2014, 9:33pm

It is, but its also interesting/amusing to see what people vote.

Statistically speaking, unless you have a SUPER hardcore fanbase/community, the poll should look like an upward slope, with the two ends being the lowest (due to the lack of publicity/starting up/etc and because the year usually hasn't ended).

In reality, people (generally) bullshit these polls. They usually vote for the two extreme ends, even though (sometimes) the poll operators can PROVE that such results are literally impossible. (Imagine how embarrassing it would be if lambchopsil made a news post with the poll results saying "Man look at all these idiots who voted for 2004. The site wasn't even up in 2004, it was started in 2005! trololololo")

I really find that hard to believe, seeing as (as far as I remember) you've never been able to actually download any manga chapters from MU...

Technicalities matter, ya know.

Edit: Well, I guess that is what I get for trying to be clever when tired and feverish. Sorry about the partially incoherent ramblings. I did actually have a point, but didn't communicate it properly.

TL DR: Yes, once upon a time there were DL links here. However, they were gone before 2011.

Yes, but they always linked outside of MU itself. It was a little bit of legal horseplay to make sure that whatever happens, it was not MU that could be accused of violating some kind of copyright laws. All of 'em were hosted somewhere else. ( Note that I'm not 100% certain on this, so feel free to correct me if you know better.)

Like I said, technicalities matter. I'm being rather pedantic here, but it comes with the territory of having several lawyers in the family laugh

Edit: To clarify. The pedantry in this post is for the sake of technicality, or just because. In my first post, I had actually forgotten those long gone DL links, which were no longer around in 2011, unless I'm horribly mistaken about that.

I have no idea what you're saying. Because MU used to link the DL to an external server you're arguing that when hartato clicked that DL link and clicked "Save" to my folder = she didn't download it from MU?

Indeed you are....and for no bloody reason?
There used to be DDL links on the releases page that linked to megaupload/mediafire/scanlator's host etc.

Yes, technically speaking, the files you download are not hosted on this site, but the links were available here. Back then, there was barely any reason to go to a group's site.

hartato was speaking in context. If he said "I still have the first chapter manga that i download from megaupload", then it would have no relevance to this conversation.
It's no different than saying "I downloaded this manga from <scanlator's site>".

Actually, there is a perfectly good reason for it: It amused me.

Mayhap I should have added a smiley to my initial reply, but really, I'm being pedantic just because. To kill time. To cause pointless dialogue and argument for their own sake.

And more on point. This is from the forum rules:
Quote
(Modified 08/27/10) DO NOT ask where to download manga. Asking for download sites is the same as asking for download links. Asking where to read manga online is ALSO the same as asking for downloads. We are an information site and NOT a download site. You need to find it on your own. To extend this rule, we also do not allow you to post links to scanlation downloads.

Note the day of the modification. By what I remember (and please, correct me if I'm wrong), the direct links to download stuff from MU were gone at that point, or perhaps even earlier.

Quote from hartato

Note that this was over a year after said update. Since the rules abolish giving such links, it isn't all that much long of a stretch to assume that someone saying they downloaded stuff via MU could be considered unwelcome where MU staff is concerned (and yes, this is just a theoretic and hyperbolic argument)

Edit: Well, I guess that is what I get for trying to be clever when tired and feverish. Sorry about the partially incoherent ramblings. I did actually have a point, but didn't communicate it properly.

thread

» chueisha on June 6th, 2014, 4:31am

No no we're not stirring up anything. I'm replying to your argument against 狂気.

Your argument originally was that MU didn't allow DL because it linked somewhere else back when it linked it in releases page which had confused me.

Let's start again: this is when Manick decided to remove all releases linkshttp://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?page=1&tid= 33211&hl=download%20releases%20MU%20links

Yes. It was in 2010. Yes MU admitted they didn't host the files themselves. This is because they LINKED them to scanlators' links of the files. So yeah, you can download from MU. Mainly by clicking it on the releases page. Ugh one post you say MU didn't allow the links, the other you say yeah they did allow links but she still didn't download from MU because those links weren't hosted on MU. This confuses me.

Please have an open mind that it's possible that MU used to allow people to easily download new releases through their site. I know their current policy suggests otherwise but MU when it first started out was more underground and it definitely wanted to be as useful as possible for the scanlators and fans.

And lol if you're talking about technicalities. You said "never had download links" well MU did have DL links sad

Edit: I don't want any trouble but this honestly started because you doubted another poster's post with simply "MU never allowed DL links." Frankly, we got irked when you doubted someone's post with wrong info.

I used to make my own spreadsheets of information about manga I wanted to read, and came here for info... hard to believe I actually used to do that. MU's information database was obviously much better, so after a while, I gave up on my spreadsheets and switched to filling out missing info in the database here. I loved it, and the rest is history. Compared to what I know now, though, I knew so little about manga when I first joined that it's embarrassing. I was so uptight back then, too... apologies to all who put up with my nonsense.
