|New Poll - Physical Manga
|This week's poll wasn't asked by a specific person, but rather it was prompted as I read a suggestion by our member psycho-shocker, which was sort of related to the actual poll. Do you own physical manga? Like volumes (tanks) or even magazines? And if so, how much? Ya, I generalized the options, but hey, it's a simple poll!
You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)

I kind of wish I had put a 2003 option just to see how many people would choose that option. FYI, MU was started July 20, 2004

I'm proud to say that I'm one of those who always try to buy physical manga volumes when I can (ie if I have the money) to try to support mangakas. After all, it's because of sales that my favourite mangakas can continue producing what I love. And even in cases when I can buy the digital version, it'll always feel better to hold the books in my hands than storing them in my computer (though but for the shipping fee I would've been able to buy a lot more mangas)
I have around 200 volumes give or take.
I've cut down a lot of though. A few of the series I collect are actually finished and I'm just waiting on the final volumes. I like to support when I can. It's nice to read manga physically holding a book.
Bought just a few here and there, the ones I really like aren't available in my country. Even if they were, I'll be fluent enough soon to just import them. No need to support the crazy prices in my country.
I have around 130 volumes. Used to collect them a long time ago but haven't bought any lately as most of my cash goes to other things.
I'd say I'm a collector, but that doesn't mean I have a lot. I'm just picky about what I collect.
Then again an entire bookcase is probably a lot.
Used to be a collector, till I ran out of space and money. lol. Now it's just here and there.
I used to collect a lot myself but now it's slowly become more of a trajectory towards owning manga in different languages. So far I have: English, French, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, German, Czech, Dutch, Italian and Hungarian.
Voted for just a few here and there I'm not a serious collector because getting some manga is pretty expensive but I got about 70 vols with a huge discount at a bookmarket. Or when there is manga in book version but the fan scans have not caught up I'll sometimes buy some.
Though never the manga's that get translated in my language they are big series like OP, Naruto and some other but after looking at 1 vol of Naruto I decided to never buy Dutch translated manga. It is somewhat cheaper than buying English vols but those are really long series.
I used to buy my manga when I was small so I got like 2 big box worth.. But not one of them are a complete set (excluding one shots) ;-; it's always missing volumes here and there.
Now that I think about it, I've been buying much less these days
My cheap fiber board bookcase strains under the weight of all my manga.
Isn't this a repeat?
Anyway, not manga, but books advertising/recommending manga and/or anime....
A few volumes from xxxholic that I love, some from Sakura Card Captor that I haven't read the manga online plus they were cheap and volume 19 and 20 of Shaman King cause I absolutely love Osorezan Revoir and Matamune
I have just over 500 volumes of manga and 29 illustration books. I'm going to assume I qualify as a collector
I don't buy as much as I used to. I used to spend over $1500USD a year on manga, I spend probably about half that now.
theres loads of manga in my house, but i dont collect them, they are my sisters. its fun to browse them once in a while, but digital is the way to go for me
I'm not collecting them much lately, but I have a few hundred maybe a little more than a thousand. Mostly french ones,a few in english and japanese. I tend to have more in digital (even those I have on paper). The problem with physical, after 2-3 reads, they can have some loose pages (My big edition of Maison Ikkoku is in bad shape...). Plus since I had move a lot so most of them are in cardboards... A pain in the ass to find my full collection of ranma 1/2, urusei yatsura, dragon ball or other long series...
I bought a lot when I was younger, but I've since sold most of it to make room in my bookcase. I still have quite a bit, though. I have the entirety of Mink
and NG Life
, which I got before Tokyopop went under and they went out of print. I also have all of The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross
back from when I was on a Tanemura Arina
kick. Aside from that, I have some unfinished series that I lost interest in or some odd volumes of series I enjoy. I mostly read online and from the library these days because a lot of manga either isn't worth the cost or isn't available in my region.
I do/intend to support artists and authors I enjoy, though. Once I get a steady job, I'm going to buy the entirety of Pandora Hearts
, and if Karneval
ever becomes available in my region, I'm going to buy that, too.
I picked the second highest option. Last time I counted I had a bit above 300 volumes, mixed English and Swedish, so prolly a bit more now. It has slowed down considerably though, so no, I'm not quite collector material, I don't think.
I wouldn't say a lot nor would I have "a few" (there's too much of a large difference in quantity between those two options).
Recently I've been collecting completed sets of mangas. I'd say about 80-90% are out of print now and they're only mangas that I deem completely worthy of buying as to not waste money and have to go through the trouble of selling them eventually. (Though I will have to set up an account someday since I have textbooks to get rid of as well....) I've been eyeing a few more sets on ebay which I hesitate to buy though because for the most part, their english published version is scanned. Hmm....
When I look at why people choose various options, I find it quite interesting especially when they have amounts up to the hundreds and here I am, barely 50 Lol maybe there should be a clarification of what is considered "few" and "a lot" xD Based on what people have been posting though, I think I should have voted "few" then instead of "a lot"...
I posted for a few because while I have over 100 manga my novel/book collections is somewhere in the 400-500. It is probably even more because I do not bother counting the books I have in storage boxes because my shelves got full.
But you are right that there could be some numbers in the poll like over 200 for the first option and 100, 20-100 and 10-20 or so for the other options.
Ah...I'd really like that. A book/novel collection of hundreds (I don't mind so much about manga since I only buy if I really like them). It's a small dream of mine to own my own small library and create some reading room when I settle down in the future. It'll be my little anti-digital space =)
I have quite a few, but most of them are Japanese.
You should consider doing one which asks what exactly is collected - Japanese volumes? Japanese magazines? English/foreign language translated volumes? English language magazines?
Then you'd need the obligatory scanlator answer of "I've bought many and destroyed many..."
Just reached 350 volumes. I used to buy lots of manga a few years ago, compared to now, but I still buy at least two a month.
Well, I'm by no means a collector but I do have a lot. I haven't counted but maybe 75-100? Most of my collection contains 5 volume manga or so and I'm picky on ones I deem "buy worthy" so it's not as huge as it could be. And frankly, I'd say a 1/3 of them is Rave Master (collected all 35) and another portion is Alice in country of hearts/clover series. I've fallen behind on buying those, especially when there is 1-2 volumes out every month, but I've got the bulk of them with plans to get those I missed when I have the money.
I'm ashamed to admit, but I haven't got a single physical copy of manga.
I assume manga is available in Israel, but it's probably only the really popular stuff I'm not interested in.
I wouldn't mind buying some, if it weren't that expensive to ship from Amazon... And the rates have gone up... Like 16-17 dollars? Ugh... Maybe someday...
Honto offers manga quite cheap, 400 Yen per volume, that's a bit less than 3 Euros, and they have fair shipping prices, charging only the actual shipping cost.
