New Poll - Assuming Genders
This week's poll isn't manga related, but it's an interested one suggested by crimsonsnow00017. When you "see" someone on the internet, which may be say reading a post on a forum or messaging them online, etc, what gender do you usually assume the other person to be by default, without having any other clues or confirmations? Personally, I just assume everyone is a guy unless I know otherwise.

Edit: It's too late, so I am not editing this poll to add more choices

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Your favorite series has been going for a while now. You...
Choices:
Want it to continue forever - votes: 2963 (29.3%)
Want it to end before it turns worse - votes: 6112 (60.5%)
Want the author to stop to start a completely new series - votes: 359 (3.6%)
Want a spin-off story of it - votes: 665 (6.6%)
There were 10099 total votes.
The poll ended: August 2nd 2014

So the recommendation here is to not get greedy and just end something on a good note.

I'm female and I default male.

I think like (is it the romance languages.) where objects have either a male or female form, but most of the time it tend to default with the male form. (I'm probably wording this wrong).
But taking that, I just default anyone on here as male.

EDIT-

I think you should have kept that others option for those who don't want to reveal what gender they are.
I'm not crazy right? There was an others option there before right? O.o

Poll to see how many people follow rule 16 on MU... so basically the first option.

thread

» frodfy on August 2nd, 2014, 1:06am

I find this poll really difficult. For me, it depends on what kind of website or topic it is. I can usually tell if it is a male or a female just by the way they write, though. Sometimes I think it'll be interesting if someone were female or male because of the way they think but other than that I usually don't mind.

thread

» NightSwan on August 2nd, 2014, 1:21am

I'm not sure.
I try to see what topics the person posts in, what they tell about themselves.
Can't say I've been wrong many times, unless I was purposely mislead.
But I try not to assume anything.

Forums are different, than say, online games.
Some people like to play like the opposite gender, but they're usually upfront about it or you can tell by their overtly feminine or masculine writing to compensate.
Other times... Who knows? I was mislead for years by an online in game friend who played with his wife's account... The tone was pretty butch, but I liked that. We had fun in-game. I even developed a crush on "her". But then "she" told me "she" was a "he". I felt pretty betrayed... It was never the same after that... ._.

im female, but i always assume everyone else is male if the writing is neutral. but any use of cutesy emoticon i will instantly regard the others as female. any use of excessive shorthand i will think of tween girls. i know, im kinda sexist.

I usually assume genders based on the site I'm at. If the site biases a particular demographic or if it's about certain topics, I will assume that gender.

If it's a relatively equal demographic site, I don't make any assumptions or just base it what their avatar/username/post sounds like. (i.e. sakura/flower/sparkle = female, dude/guns/boobs = male)

I'm right about 75% of the time. Good enough margin for me.

This.

Most of the time I find myself assuming male, but if I'm on something like tumblr, female is what I assume most because well, I find out most of them are female and it kinda sticks ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌

thread

Depends on the site. Most sites I frequent have a large male majority, thus I default a male. If there's no indicator, I use what I can from posts or avatars. If there's nothing like that, male it is, since that's who the user is most likely.

The data is anonymous and people aren't forced to vote. If we are doing a gender survey, choosing to not specify your gender beats the whole purpose of the survey.

I usually judge by the avatar. If it's male, I assume the person is male. If it's female, unless it's overly sexualized, I assume the person is female. This has mislead me soo many times.

Well...
In social networking sites like Facebook, I don't default to any gender... I believe them to be as they appear...the profile picture also tells you a lot things anyway...

In gaming community(s) like IGN or Steam, I see most of them as Male and they appear to be so...
but, I don't guess, I speak, look at the Avatar and Gametag ... They tells you a lotta things ~

thread

» RoxFlowz on August 2nd, 2014, 7:42am

Yeah, depends on the site (as well as avatar and phrasing). But I think I tend to assume people to be male rather than female, or it's just that I see more guys around in general. Though on MU, I wouldn't be so quick to assume someone to be male.

thread

» zarlan on August 2nd, 2014, 10:01am

While I chose "I'm male and I don't default to any gender", I do have a natural inclination to default male.
Though I sometimes get an inclination that the person is female, despite no evidence, I am generally inclined towards a male default
...but I try my best, not to assume a gender, and I do think that I have begun to weaken my inclinations to default male, because of it.

BTW...
I see some mentioning getting clues from a person's avatar.
Your avatar is, as the word indicates, a representation of yourself ...as is your handle/nick.

Some people use avatars that depict a character of the opposite gender, and sometimes even a handle/nick, that is the name of a character that is of the opposite gender (or that is in the style of a opposite gender character, like a man having "Sailor X", for example) or simply a gender specific name, of the opposite gender.
In those cases, I have decided that I will, in future, refer to them with the gender of their avatar and/or handle/nick, despite clear evidence that they are the other gender.
Why?
Because they made the stupid choice to represent themselves that way.

(the only exception being game avatars, where your character is good at different things, depending on their gender. Then the choice is, at least in part, due to what type of stats and gaming style you prefer. The fact that they are the gender that they are, is then often secondary ...and in those cases, I often end up choosing a female character myself, because they tend to have the stats that I prefer)

...oh and also: I second the requests for including options for those who don't fall into the categories of male or female.

thread

» Here_And_Now on August 2nd, 2014, 10:21am

I tend to judge based on how they word their comment(s). Sometimes just by the words or phrasing someone uses you can get a good guess at their gender. I know I personally try to use gender neutral avatars and names, even though I am definitely female and don't try very hard to hide that fact when seriously active in a forum or community. It's just that I have found when only casually involved in a forum, especially concerning more "male" oriented topics, your opinions and thoughts are taken more seriously if people don't know you're female.

thread

» Badkarma on August 2nd, 2014, 10:27am

I try to refer to people with gender neutral pronouns, unless they've openly defined their gender.

thread

» VitaeVivae on August 2nd, 2014, 11:25am

If there isn’t any kind of information available I involuntarily presume female.

But if someone doesn’t have their gender visible and I’m curious, there generally other aspects I'd use to refine the guess - writing style, avatar/username, the website, their profile, the subject they’re talking about, the people they know/are 'friends’ with, etc

Having said all of that, I think the process is predominantly unconscious since I never actually find myself crossing a 'step 3: look at _____’ off of some mental ‘how-to verify gender' list o.O

Yeah, that person doesn't have to reply, but in a way that's like saying I made a poll you can vote in, but if you want to reply you can't. (Although I guess you don't have to tell others what you voted, and just explain you're reasoning of what default you pick...)
But what about those who consider themselves both gender or neither genders? The poll is pretty much excluding them.
I mean
Quote from Forum Rules
Thread titles must be appropriate for all people from different races, genders, age groups, etc
(I think that would extent to contents too ... like poll options)
I find the no genders or both genders thing to be kind of like being asexual. You may think there's just straight, gay or both, but there's also the option of none. You may think it's just male, or female but there are some that consider themselves both, or none.
(Sorry I should have made that a little more clear in my first edit, but it was 3am ... I was tired >.< )

I also don't mean to derail this topic, but the others option is a valid option to add. (To not exclude anyone.)

Edit
.... on second thought quoting the forum rules to an admin .... I know you know the rules, of course you do, you reinforce them. I don't mean that to come off as an insult lambchopsil. (If taken that way)

A lot of the time, the username or avatar gives it away before I talk to them. Usernames are usually representative of the person in some way and the most basic of it is representing their gender. If it is a unisex kind of name, I'll ask for their preferred gender pronoun. But usually one or the other gives it away (username/avatar)

As for other people's posts, the sensitivity towards the binary of gender is certainly spiked. That or people are making a joke of it.

Male here, and I just assume its a guy until I'm told otherwise. The way I see it, most of the places I visit tend to have a higher percentage of male, so the odds are in my favor. Worst case scenario, I got a 50% chance its male bigrazz.

That is obvious nonsense.
Take a look at my comment where I show how it can be done, with extreme ease.

Yes, there are tons of different categories (and some debate on which are genuine) and you can't include all ...but you can include "other".
Very easily.
(if anyone complains, just point out the futility of including all categories)
...and pretty much no one would default "other", so there is no need to include any such options.
In other words:
The list of options I mentioned (i.e. just three more, giving a total of nine) is perfectly fine.
Quote from Cthylla
Is the hard part adding a new option because the poll already has votes? If it's just adding an option in general it should be simple to just start a new poll. Or is the site just designed weirdly?

No, they've added/modified options in the past, without any problems.

thread

» lambchopsil on August 3rd, 2014, 3:57pm

I'd have to remake it with the new options, which would force everyone to revote, and I'd have to delete the history of the old poll since it doesn't apply anymore. And it'd also throw off ongoing records of having site polls last 7-ish days.

So despite whatever you say to try and convince me, I will not be remaking the poll. As with all other site polls, taking the poll is optional and is not being used for any sort of research purposes.

I'm not sure if you're thinking this request is like the "where's the I don't care option" For those, I can understand a reply of ' You don't have to vote/reply ' .
These are people who want to vote, but feel that they can't. (Then they feel excluded, probably hurt, and/or offended)

But this is a small matter .... I'm okay dropping this. ( I asked once, you said no, I'm dealing with it. It's not the end of the world for me)

Back to the topic. -
I think I may have another reason why I default everyone to male.
I think somewhere in my mind, I think every male is in love with me, and why not? I'm awesome. (Wow I'm laughing so much in my mind right now. laugh ) Why does everyone need to be male for them to love me? So I can love them back, since I'm mostly straight ...
IIII I'm hooked on a feeling! High on believing, that you're in love with me!!!
(There must be something wrong with me if I think every male loves me ... but one can dream right? lol )

Bringing it up again doesn't sound like you are actually dealing with it.

It has been acknowledged that there should have been an "other" option. I would think that would bring an end to this, obviously it was a misjudgement. Even that may have been acknowledged already. Nothing's going to change, also acknowledged. Surely, this won't happen again so can people move on now?

Also, just to add. I've been here for a while and I've only seen Lambs change polls within seconds - minutes (on a very off day) - of creating them, there is a reason for that. Believe it or not~

I'd have to remake it with the new options, which would force everyone to revote, and I'd have to delete the history of the old poll since it doesn't apply anymore. And it'd also throw off ongoing records of having site polls last 7-ish days.

So...
How come I've seen the poll being modified a couple of times before?
I don't get it.
Was it okay then, because the changes where made early? ...because given that this was suggested, seconded and clarified, all within the same day that the poll was made, as far as I can tell...

Not having the "other" option isn't the end of the world, and if there is a problem that makes it too much trouble to fix I'm fine with that, but...
I don't find the reasons terribly convincing.

Not if you live in California.

lambchopsil made this poll at 11:15 pm on Aug 1st Pacific Time. Then he went to bed, woke up, probably had some life to deal with, and then at 8:23 pm on Aug 2nd Pacific Time he made an edit to his first post, which is as he said, almost a full day later than when he posted the poll.

Do you think he's lying to you or something? He said it's too late to fix because by the time he was fully aware of the situation it was too late to fix. Whoops. It happens. Quit hassling the guy, already.

Only a day.

I am thinking that the explanation is lacking.
As to whether or not this is due to lying...
Maybe, maybe not.
Maybe there are details I am not aware of, maybe there are issues that he's failed to explain, maybe there are details that he has missed ...or something else.

Lying is certainly a possibility that I am certainly not dismissing.
Why not? Well...
Is he someone that I know, and have learned to trust?
No.
Do people lie?
Yes.
Most people do.
Especially when they are criticized.

That said, I'd like to repeat that I don't assume that lying is is the reason.
I tend to avoid assuming, in general.
Not just in the area of people's gender.

When I hear an explanation that doesn't seem to make sense, I often don't just let that go.
That has nothing to do with the original issue.
In other words:
It's not that I'm hung up on the issue of an "other" option. I'm hung up on the explanation for why there isn't one.
...as I clearly stated in that comment, right after the sentence you cited.
Please bother to actually read comments, before replying to them.

Is the hard part adding a new option because the poll already has votes? If it's just adding an option in general it should be simple to just start a new poll. Or is the site just designed weirdly?

I mostly assume gender depending on how a person writes.

Heavily based on the sites I go to i.e manga sites/forums, gaming sites (more males than females) and of course the person's avatar. I myself have always been mistaken for a guy on some of the sites I go to even without a avatar XD. The main reason why this account is so "girly" lol. But, I guess we all can agree that most people usually default male regardless.

Difficult question.

I tend to think in images, so when I talk to someone on the internet, I don't think of their gender but rather I create my image of that person by their username or their profile picture.

So I guess I don't default to any gender.

I don't default any gender, I assume according to the data I can get from the user's posts after checking the profile.

Default male or G.I.R.L until I know them a littler better.

I expected it...but FFS. Just...FFS.

Huh? What do you mean by that? There are no girls on the internet.

Seriously though, I base off my assumptions on avatar and nickname if there are no other indicators... but if it is complete Anon, in my mind it is a guy, until proven otherwise.

btw. I'm a guy.

On this site: female

Cause the amount of fujoshis here is overwhelming.

» scarletrhodelia on August 5th, 2014, 8:47am

Female, default male. Unless the topic is shoujo or yaoi, then default female. Avatars are too misleading, but interests tell the truth, most often.

» Nirhtuc on August 5th, 2014, 8:41pm

This week's poll is a little odd but very interesting! I don't know about others, but I really can't tell if I'm talking to a male or female based on their written language (or even avatars/user pics), so I tend not to make assumptions about gender... unless of course, if it's something like a comment on imdb, in which case it's not too hard to know the gender of someone (usually judging from the kinds of unsavoury or discriminatory remarks that tend to be made there!). roll

Edit: Yes, there should be an 'other' gender option, but unfortunately, most people do not think or care about that- the world still thinks in binaries (on the whole). It's just too complex or 'weird' for many individuals to grasp and/or accept. This is just a MU poll, though. There are worse avenues for discrimination... like the census or passports!

thread

» BlueCatPK on August 7th, 2014, 2:08am

To be fair, even if there would be "other" option, some people would still be angry or butthurt over:
"why is it "other" and not *something specific*?" or "I'm *something specific*, why do you call me "other"? That's offensive and insensitive!"

or something like that...
When it comes to the topic like this, there is no winning with some people.

I default male. But I also always gender a person by the way they communicate online, which is probably what most people do anyway.

thread

» Isolated Existence on August 24th, 2014, 11:31pm

I choose not to default any gender. Even through the writing style etc., it is hard for me to tell. Sometimes, on anonymous chats where I talk about anime/manga, the gender doesn't really matter to me. However, I guess it plays a factor in online conversations since when I say I'm male even though I'm female, and the conversation is going well, sometimes the stranger just disconnects. XD
