New Poll - Manga App
This week's poll from BaeSooky deals with apps on your phone or tablet. If you own one, do you have any manga-related apps on them? Maybe the MangaUpdates app? Or some other app that allows you to read manga or keep track of stuff? For the purposes of the poll, let's leave out games that are based on manga/anime series.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How do you feel about unrealistic manga?
Choices:
Love it, crazier the better! - votes: 1730 (19%)
Like it, as long as it's not too over the top - votes: 4820 (52.9%)
Indifferent - votes: 1905 (20.9%)
Dislike, since it needs to be a bit more realistic - votes: 508 (5.6%)
Hate it, I enjoy reading realistic manga - votes: 150 (1.6%)
There were 9113 total votes.
The poll ended: November 7th 2014

Looks like most of us like reading about the fantastical stuff that goes above and beyond what's possible/probably in real life

50% don't have an app to read manga? The heck? Why are you even on this site if you don't read manga?

Lol. I have a smartphone but read all my manga offline on my laptop, so I answered "No."

I read manga exclusively offline too, but I read it on my PC, my tablet when in bed, and smart phone when on the go. I don't get not even having a reader app installed even if you don't use it too often.

Perfect Viewer (android) is the best manga reading software I've seen for anything anywhere.

Agree! I use Perfect Viewer only for reading zips/rar when I direct download mangas... but other times I rely on MangaWatcher and Mango.

Yeah, but your experience isn't necessarily the same as with all MU users. There are many ways to read manga, not just yours. Hence this poll.

You don't get not having a reader app? That's okay, because I also don't get constantly zooming and scrolling just to be able to read comics on a 4-6" screen. Goes both ways, really.

The problem I have with most manga reading apps on iOS or Android is that none of them follow the said platform's design guidelines. Those that do tend to be wrappers for online reading sites anyway, so might as well just use the actual website on the browser instead.

Yup, pretty much this...
Manhwas are really handy for phones, cauz you can just zoom in and just scroll down...
But for mangas, landscape mode should do it, zoom in widthwise and you're good to go (just scroll down)

Hmmmm, you do know there are online reading sites right....

@jonytep - you can prolly do the way i recommended for reading manga :3
Assuming your app have the zoom lock

"50% don't have an app to read manga?""Why are you even on this site"

Wow top pleb.
No tablet has the resolution a good, large monitor (or high-def laptop screen) can provide, and double-page threads look like ass on them. Furthermore, if you're reading manga on a phone, you're an idiot.

Most people here enjoy manga and don't use 3rd-rate means to read it.

The apps aren't compactible with my nokia phone. And an apple product is to expensive for me (I don't have that kind of money).

Can't decide.

Is this a douchey sarcasm or plain ignorance?

I was going to write a snarky response to this (I mean, there is no correlation between being a manga reader and having a manga app), but looking at some responses, some might be voting without fully understanding the poll. If you vote "no" because you don't read manga on a mobile device (smartphone/phablet/tablet), the poll does not apply to you (question is "do you use a manga app on your handheld device?" and not "Do you read manga on your handheld device?"), so answering "no" would mean that you read manga on your phone without a manga app (so you use the browser or standard image viewer).

thread

» auriga on November 9th, 2014, 9:10pm

I wasn't able to specify so in my replies, but yeah I neither read manga nor have any manga-related app on my mobile device/s. So my initial response stays.

I did have the MU app before, but only because I wanted to see what it could do.

thread

I don't use a manga app and even if I read most of my manga on the PC I keep some scanlations in markers on my phone and read them from their reader

thread

» TundraDweller on November 8th, 2014, 1:03am

I read manga only at home or work, on the PC. In the future I might start reading on the tablet but for now I'm pretty set in my ways.

thread

» tactics on November 8th, 2014, 2:16am

I have a few but I never use them, and the MU app is buggered I can't log in. So they all just sit there for one of those "just in case" days lol.

thread

» strixflash on November 8th, 2014, 2:59am

Yes, and I have two apps which I regularly use.

I think Mango and MangaWatcher are the best apps available for manga reading/downloading.

thread

» Strobe on November 8th, 2014, 2:59am

I used to have the MU app but because I needed to update my iPad and iPhone. I had to make space so I removed it. Since then I haven't downloaded it again because I never used it.

I don't think you count using Safari to read manga. I don't have ebooks or PDFs of manga to read on something like iBooks.

Okay...to make it clear...

Yeah, I do read Mangas/Manhwas/Manhuas/Webtoons on my Smartphone time to times, whenever I'm to lazy to be on my PC...
But, I don't Use Any App...
I normally Read Manga Via Browser, as I do on PC, if I'm not reading offline...

I don't quite get your questions...
From what you said, I get the feeling that you're trying to say that, One Must Have A Manga-related App To Read Manga, Ones Who Don't Use A App, Surely Doesn't Read Mangas, Thus, He Shouldn't Be On This Site !!

Now, the thing is, I never knew that one MUST have a Manga-related App to read manga or. Get other information(like availability) about Manga...Savvy ?!

Yay Sooky! <3

I don't have any manga related apps on my phone.
In fact, I'm not aware of any. Maybe because I'm not in the habit of reading manga on my phone.
I tried reading yuri during class a couple of times, but it wasn't comfortable at all and I was afraid all the scrolling was going to seem suspicious. haha

MU runs pretty well on my phone though, so I don't need an app for it. And as far as I'm aware, there isn't even an android application for it. ='/

thread

» makoz on November 8th, 2014, 10:20am

I mostly read on my laptop, but I must say that there are some excellent webcomics on Line webtoon and it's quite enjoyable reading on my nexus 4 (better than the script to read on pc). That's the only manga app I use on my phone.

thread

» dosetsu on November 8th, 2014, 12:48pm

I have not the slightest idea why anyone would want to read manga on a smartphone, I can only imagine a really bad experience doing so. I personally feel any device under 7", possibly 8" is simply too small despite whatever resolution said device has, there just isn't enough screen real estate to enjoy manga on.

Yes, I read manga on my handheld device, however, I don't use a specific manga-related application, seeing as that's redundant—the web browser does just fine 100% of the time.

thread

» Nekore on November 8th, 2014, 4:06pm

I'm a big screen smartphone user, but I read more text than manga in it but still just flip the phone and going from top to bottom (some times moving a bit more if it is a long panel or doble page) and it's a nice read for an update I want to read in the moment, or sometimes when starting a series and I'm in bed but can't sleep yet (as it isn't a good idea to read for many hours in bed, sleepy for the laptop)

thread

Does light novel counts?? most manga apps aren't that diferent from just using the internet, but a light novel one helps, even more when I want to keep some academics documents open in my others text apps

thread

» yarn on November 8th, 2014, 11:16pm

Light novels are a completely different medium and are often optimized for phone-size screens, while manga is usually originally meant for much larger sheets of paper...

thread

» jonytep on November 8th, 2014, 5:50pm

I use a normal manga reader on my tablet called... uh... "Manga Reader" for android. I download the manga so I can read everything offline when I'm not at home. At home, I usually use my laptop.

On my phone, because of its 5" screen, it must be really hard to read manga and I'm not even going to try. For webtoons is fine though. I have the LINE Webtoon app and it works like a charm. Webtoons are acceptable because the panels areusually not so small and you can still have a good image without having to strain your vision so much.

Best poll we've had in a while. ;3

I used to have the MU app but that fails now, so no. I just read on my laptop. There really isn't a lot of manga apps out there either, I've tried a few but they are pretty much all faulty or don't have the fully functional features many websites have.

thread

» yarn on November 8th, 2014, 11:13pm

I do have a couple of official apps on my phone, but honestly I usually don't like to bother with trying to read on a tiny screen.

thread

» Moon-Angelica on November 9th, 2014, 1:19am

I use Perfect Viewer on my tablet to read manga. That way I can read in bed or on the go (I travel a lot). Though I have to admit - I have a 10.1" screen and I can't imagine trying to read on anything smaller, let alone on a phone smile

thread

» quark1020 on November 9th, 2014, 8:03am

I do not. The screen is too small on my phone to fully enjoy a manga (or any graphic novel in general) and I don't own a tablet. I'll stick to my PC at home or bring a physical book.

On a side note, I do use an app for light novels. My phone is definitely capable of reading text.

thread

» auraya on November 9th, 2014, 4:48pm

One word, Mango. My favorite app. Keeps track of all my reading progress and let's me know of any new chapters. You can even select which sites to pull your chapters from. Sadly he always gets kicked out of the play store, so you just have to download it from his website. I exclusively read manga on my smartphone, but that's why I need my larger screen!

thread

» Unknown on November 9th, 2014, 5:53pm

I loved Mango back when I had my Samsung! It's a shame but iOS doesn't have an app that comes remotely close. Manga Rock, Manga Reader and Manga Storm are the best it has to offer but Mango was amazing. I also had to download it from the website back then when I had my Samsung. I also enjoyed how the creator would name his updates after certain characters. lol

thread

» evilcleo on November 9th, 2014, 8:27pm

I use my tablet or computer. I have enough trouble keeping my battery available as it is. To add an app that will just drain it so much faster...I'd rather just wait until I get home and get on my tablet. The screen is too small anyway.

thread

» Jooles on November 10th, 2014, 6:31am

I find it more comfortable reading stuff on my phone. Especially since BakaBT are crazy-slow with accepting new client-versions so I'm stuck reading shit online (and reading online with a laptop is dreadful).

And Mangareader-apps are waaaaay better than reading stuff on a phone-browser. WhoTF would do that...

thread

» mysstris on November 12th, 2014, 11:56pm

I can't enjoy reading on such a small screen. The smallest I can do is a 7 inch screen but even then I usually just use my laptop to read.

thread

» senile_seinen on November 13th, 2014, 4:35pm

I pretty much only read manga on my 10" Android tablet. I used to read it on a laptop, but then the laptop died and all the replacement options had 16x9 screens which were great for viewing manga...if you turned the laptop sideways. The old high-res 4x3 screens were better as the width was proportionately about two manga pages and the height on any of the better screens was 1000+ pixels. Now you have to buy an expensive laptop to get a screen with 1000 or more pixels down, which can make small detail hard to see.

If I had one of the fancy flippy-screen tablet-laptops I might use that for manga. As it is, my three year old tablet does the job quite well turned short side up.
