| Announcing History! Inside Scanlation! |
It is my pleasure to announce the grand opening of website Inside Scanlation!
As you all know, one of MangaUpdates' focuses is on scanlations. Inside Scanlation details the history of the scanlation process. There are articles about different sectors of the scene, from speed scanlations to Lurk to our own site here. There are also interviews with various sites, groups, and organizations, including an IRC interview with me and Manick, njt from MangaHelpers, and even something from TokyoPop. Even if you have only a cursory interest, I highly recommend you check out the site.
Two cool things I want to point out. 1) Timeline 2) Banner Collage
Inside Scanlation is the work of Gum, who compiled all this data into the baby you see now. It has been a work in progress for the last 3 years, and now it has seen the light of day. May we see more updates in the future! |

Not necessary, maybe, but its the best way for people to see it, a lot of people may only go straight to the new releases (I know I do sometimes).
Not like it hampers your browsing in anyway. Great site too. |

I'm actually pretty new to the scanlating scene, and so I've been really curious about it. Like the site says, "none could come up with a satisfactory answer". I've spent at least three hours reading stuff on there now. xD
The timeline is /incredible/. It's got so many things that I've heard older members referring to, for one, and it's just nice to look through. It makes me remember that scanlating isn't just about translating and editing manga.
The site itself is great. It's wonderfully laid out, and all the little features (the 'background' tab that pops out, for one) are a delight. All in all, thank you for what must have taken an incredible amount of effort. |

What an awesome site! *o* I had no idea that the serialization of Rurouni Kenshin began just as the serialization of Naruto began, among other things, haha.
(Just thought I'd mention - The first thing I read was yours' and Manick's interview, and it just makes me want to 'aww' XD;; You guys have come a long way, and we, the visitors and members of MU, all love you for it
I'm not really active in the forums anymore, but I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this site a couple years ago. I still check it every day, several times a day, and will continue for as long as it's around ^___^ Long live, MU!) |

| As a historian at heart, I'm always happy to see histories of seemingly obscure things in fandom. The site is well organized, the writing is light and easy to follow, and the research was done in depth. Of course, it has its faults, but overall, I was impressed at all the time and effort that went into this project. |

The best interview on the site has to be Simon Jones' from Icarus Publishing. He was pretty much the only one who sounded like a modern manga fan turned professional.
Jason Thompson's interview was interesting but it seems his reply to the question of ever reading scanlations was the same as Marco Pavia's reply (Tokyopop) to the question of scanlation's role. Was this an editing mistake? |

But to be fair... I think Gum was just trying to get me to finish the interview since everything from mine was actually taken from IRC logs. Ahaha.
Great job Gum! You really did a fantastic job hunting everyone down. Thank you for really doing this hobby a great justice by chronicling our history. It really does seem amazing when you see it in writing. |

I just spent a good three hours reading over this site. It's just got everything! I loved the interviews. What I'm wondering though is how the interviewer was able to talk to Snoopy when his own staff hasn't been able to! XD heh...
The timeline is awesome, but I think some of it is random. Like "Samurai Deeper Kyo ends". Maybe I missed something this is relevant to on the website... |

Wow, this certainly brings back memories. I started following scanlations about nine years ago, so it's strange seeing this site when I pretty much saw history play out. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing that I'm still reading manga at age 20, but I'm glad this community exists and is growing strong.
On a different note, some my all-time favorite manga were scanlated by these old-timer groups--HunterxHunter from Toriyama's World, Yakitate Japan from SnoopyCool, and Tokyo Crazy Paradise from Manga-Sketchbook. And I'm pleasantly surprised that someone saved all those 88x31 icons. They're ancient! It was a great idea to make a collage out of them. |
