New Poll - Scanlation Notes
This new poll was submitted by our member Achiyugo. If you wanna discuss, feel free to talk about specific examples that you thought were good/bad. Hopefully scanlation groups will take this poll to heart...

You can discuss this poll on our forums here:

If you wish to suggest poll ideas, go ahead and do so here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How would you like the anime adaptation of a manga series?
Choices:
The exact same, just animated - votes: 6275 (49.6%)
Same general plot, but with some good, new content - votes: 5283 (41.8%)
No anime for me - votes: 711 (5.6%)
Different plot so that it's not repetitive - votes: 371 (2.9%)
There were 12640 total votes.
The poll ended: October 24th 2009

Exactly the same? Really? So you're willing to watch an animated version that follows exactly the same as what you read?

Really.

Also, translation notes are always welcomed, Editor notes are worthless distractions.

I like my adaptations unchanged. It ruins the feeling when they change things/add things.

I feel the same way sometimes, particularly when they change major plot points just to end the series or whatever.

Yes by naikan on October 24th, 2009, 12:39pm

I like ones that are funny, witty, or explain an untranslatable word. Most of them are pretty good, but I do hate a couple of the rare, bad ones I've seen where people have done --"You baka*" *tsl note: it means idiot--, etc. Just translate words like that!

Re: Yes by LinkMcCloud on October 24th, 2009, 12:45pm

I have to agree. Although, there was one instance I can think of where it actually wouldn't have worked right cause of the wording and actually sounded better, but on a whole, those kinds of things are kinda annoying.

Well, fight scenes are more fun to watch than to read personally.
Sometimes, the comments are funnier than the jokes. Plus it helps sometimes to understand cultural references or jokes made by a play on words that otherwise wouldn't make sense.

lambchopsil has never seen a Harry Potter film I'm guessing to actually be asking us that question.

Actually, I've seen them all. And read all the books multiple times.

But I feel that manga (with pictures) is different than a book (all words)

"Only good if they clarify the translation or scene " I hate, hate, hate the ones that try to be "funny" or "cute". [OMG X is sooo cute *huggles*] and crap like that pisses me off. That's part of the rason why I prefer reading raws these days.

I don't mind them, I just don't like it when they replace the mangaka's free talk or notes with their own. It's annoying and disrespectful.

Re: No Subject by Toto on October 25th, 2009, 4:14am

I forgot about those...
Yeah, It's not cool that they do this.
Of course, if they have both the author's page--translated--and an "edited" version of the authors page where they replace the authors comments... then it would be fine (though I probably wouldn't read it).

I don't mind them so much if their funny. And if they really really bug you just erase it. Even paint can do that much. Though I do like my clean manga. But hey I'm just a leecher, let the scanners do as they like.

of course i would... by Benares on October 25th, 2009, 8:36am

dou you guys watch bleach, one piece naruto....

we love it because its the story we love in motion with sound and voice. fullmetal alchemist 2009 is the fastest remake ever in anime history because the fans want the real story.

1:1 = awesome [because in mangas there is more stuff shown, the most adaptions ignore that]

LOL, yeah, and sometimes ppl start watching anime first and stops there so if they DO watch the anime only, they'll be able to get the real storyline ^o^v

Nothing annoys me more in anime than a plot change that is inferior to the original manga. Even if the plot change is decent, it still annoys the heck out of me

It depends by bladesworn on October 26th, 2009, 5:14pm

If it is done like they did it in Hunter X Hunter then yeah the same general plot with some good new content is fine. In Bleach and Naruto you can tell it's filler even if you haven't read the manga, with Hunter X Hunter you can't even tell if it's filler or not.

Mushishi did just fine with essentially no changes. Turning a manga into an anime can add whole dimensions to it before it even comes to changing the storyline: Music, Colours, Details, Sound, Voice Acting, Movement.

Really I'd like an answer somewhere in between exactly the same and same in general. I think it's a case-by-case thing as to whether the story needs changing from the manga to the anime. Sometimes you don't have the space to cover everything from the manga and sometimes you have the freedom to explore certain things in more depth. Sometimes the manga is still going whilst the anime is finishing up.

...

And I don't think that Sketchbook would have worked as well as an anime if they'd kept it in yon-koma. bigrazz

Depends by Da-manta-ray on October 29th, 2009, 8:21am

in response to lambchopsil... I'd rather have *some* new material in the anime adaptation... like with Card Captor Sakura; half the cards in the anime weren't in the original manga, but it was better that way. However, with something like Bleach, where they create whole arcs of crap, and the series is super long already... absolutely not. Just stick to the manga! (yes I know that the series caught up to the manga blah blah blah...)

Anyway, for the new poll... I like funny notes, but they better be *really* funny. I don't like squealing fan-girl comments. I also don't like it if the translator leaves *too much* in Japanese, and then proceeds to translate every single one of them in notes. That just makes the manga waaay too cluttered. But I do like clarifying notes, like ones about food (I personally think food names should be left untranslated... it just sounds weird in English, in most cases), or about cultural notes about the time period if it's a historical manga if it's not already explained etc.

lack of options by xhenriholimar on October 30th, 2009, 7:12pm

the poll should have a option "i like them " and a option " it's their right to put"
