New Poll - Manga App
(38 posts, 833 views) Posted: 14d 8h, 8m ago by senile_seinen in News
I pretty much only read manga on my 10" Android tablet. I used to read it on a laptop, but then the laptop died and all the replacement options had 16x9 screens which were great for viewing manga...if you turned the laptop sideways. The old high-res 4x3 scre ...
A Silent Voice - Koe no Katachi Manga to End on November 12
(2 posts, 1101 views) Posted: 37d 7h, 50m ago by senile_seinen in Koe no Katachi
I saw some commentary to this effect on 4chan back in August quoting an interview as its source. Not surprised. The plot really can go only so many places. They're frankly smart not to go over 9000 with it... ...
Why the weak heroines?
(12 posts, 618 views) Posted: 104d 6h, 5m ago by senile_seinen in Shoujo/Josei
Shoujo heroines usually have to be doormats because a) that's the societal role message Japanese shoujos get every day, and the shoujo manga published tend to deliberately reinforce it, and b) because the shoujo version of a bildungsroman has to inclu ...
New Poll - Bust
(96 posts, 5669 views) Posted: 390d 6h, 59m ago by senile_seinen in News
In manga, I like them to 'make sense' for the character. If the girl is, say, a serious athlete, it's generally rare to see a lot of fat anywhere on her, including her chest. Anything involving a first year highschooler or younger should probably be p ...
New Poll - Fonts (v2)
(70 posts, 8638 views) Posted: 675d 6h, 11m ago by senile_seinen in News
This is the day of machine lettering in comics and manga both. From what I have seen, the people typing the text into the bubbles are at the very bottom of the manga production food chain. I doubt there's either the time or the artistic force from the letterers ...
New Poll - Fonts (v2)
(70 posts, 8638 views) Posted: 676d 15h, 28m ago by senile_seinen in News
My typesetting on the first couple of chapters of HnFM is a little embarrassing because I was still learning the mechanics, but I went back and looked at the font choices and found little to complain about. That said, Hara's not the most creative mangaka wher ...

I am a super font snob. In my own scanlation work, on Hoshi no Furu Machi, WA!, and Mangaka-san there was always consideration of authorial intent.the original Japanese fonts used and application of a particular font (SFX, shouts, whispers, printed/displayed vs s ...

a Manga that makes fun of cliches

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha practically is all making fun of sword and sorcery game cliches. The characters don't even have names - they're known entirely by their character class.

Ouran Koukou Host Bu also qualifies. But I have to say that the anime do ...

Soothing seinen has quite a bit of what you seek, although the plots might be a little relaxed if you like shounen.

As already mentioned:
Aqua
Aria

But also:
Sketchbook
Hidamari Sketch
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Kabu no Isaki

And all of you suggesting CLAMP works like ...

I'm surprised no one mentioned Aria and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. They're among the best slice of life I've read so far. Genshiken also kinda fits I guess.

Romances with strong female leads and some comedic element...

Shoujo:
kare kano
fruits basket

Shounen:
suzuka
karin
video girl ai
midori no hibi (yes, Midori seems rather damp to start with, but she turns out to have quite a spine)

Seinen:

You're heading toward tsundere territory with this. There are a lot of tsundere comedy romance mangas out there. But you're not asking for that, so I'll try to keep the tsundere down to a dull roar.

Off the top of my head:

A NORMAL Romance
(20 posts, 2081 views) Posted: 920d 7h, 44m ago by senile_seinen in I'm Looking For...
I'm old. And a guy. As you might guess, teenage infatuation shoujo romances don't hold a lot of fun for me. That said, I am something of a romantic in my crusty, cynical way.

If I had to choose exactly one romance it would probably be Ai-Ren. It' ...

Hiyoko no GAO Recruiting TL for Hoshi no Furu Machi
(1 posts, 407 views) Posted: 1246d 13h, 56m ago by senile_seinen in Recruitment
Our translator on the Hoshi no Furu Machi project is unable to work on Volume 2. The vocabulary is fairly easy, but there are two surprises to HnFM that make it a little unusual to translate:

1. There are no hiragana over the kanji to help with translation.

2. Most of the ...

Saddest character in a manga...? (T_T)
(44 posts, 5380 views) Posted: 2766d 14h, 58m ago by senile_seinen in Manga General
bully_jesus makes a legitimate point - are we talking about someone who is sad, or someone who makes the reader sad?

Is sad:

1. Probably Sayoko from Mahoraba. Not too many manga feature a suicidal character.

2. Rin from Fruits Basket (she 0wns Tooru on e ...
Is Fruits Basket really all THAT?
(153 posts, 29189 views) Posted: 2781d 18h, 41m ago by senile_seinen in Fruits Basket
Chapter 136 is the last chapter (and is apparently longer than normal). Sephiroth's Samurai Girl is translating it in the little free time between studying for her A levels (she's in UK).

She'll get it out the door one of these days, never you fear. ...

My fairly-quick and relatively-painless way to make DVDs out of compressed files is:

1) if it's an AVI, open ConvertXtoDVD, and open the file there. If there's a softsub file, open that, too. Make sure your preferences are set for your TV, then hit create ...
