Shoujo/Josei Manga with Shounen Art?
(10 posts, 424 views) Posted: 29d 4h, 42m ago by Alaena Night in I'm Looking For...
I second Meteor Methuselah like burning. Especially after the first couple of volumes, when the artist really comes into her own style. The story reads a little like a shounen, what with the interesting and complex plot, but the romance is great. Very, very much worth ...
Do Japanese bathrooms have no locks?
(3 posts, 280 views) Posted: 34d 23h, 45m ago by Alaena Night in Manga General
I'm living in Japan right now, but not in a traditional house: just an apartment. However, none of the doors have locks (except for the front door). This probably has a lot do do with the fact that many of them are sliding doors. Not sure about real houses, though ...
Best manga to learn Japanese with?

I've never worried about making decks in Anki before, either. I found downloadable JLPT vocab decks on this site. If you want to focus solely on learning vocab, Anki is okay. MemRise is a lot simpler, and it can be fun. It drills you on meaning, kanji recognitio ...
Best manga to learn Japanese with?

A really good one, or so I've heard, is Yotsubato! The language is very simple and also largely everyday vocabulary.

That aside, though, so long as you have a grasp of hiragana and katakana, I'd suggest getting something you really love (preferably ...

Ever heard of the show Supernatural? =D
(51 posts, 2972 views) Posted: 184d 19h, 14m ago by Alaena Night in Chatter Box
I watched the pilot episode several months back at the recommendation of I-no-longer-remember-who, and was thoroughly unimpressed. It all felt horribly contrived and not-funny. Cue long months of me forgetting it existed.

Then, alone and far, far from home on Ch ...

Right now, I am living and working in Japan.

It's great, but I would trade my right arm for REAL MEXICAN FOOD. ...

Red River is a classic example of the "special" heroine being pursued by people with nefarious purposes. Don't let the fact that it's a little on the older side keep you from reading. It's definitely worth the read. It is a shining star of the ...
any manga with only hiragana?
(4 posts, 906 views) Posted: 441d 12h, 8m ago by Alaena Night in I'm Looking For...
@ Madmanfreak: Good luck with your learning! Like all the other responders so far, I would suggest reading something with furigana. Because the furigana (which are almost always written in hiragana but in some rare cases can be in katakana or even other kan ...

Right now?

Ramen noodles.

No, not the awesome kind. The ridiculously salty, bad-for-you WalMart kind. I don't know why. ...
Manga for learning Japanese
(8 posts, 873 views) Posted: 503d 3h, 1m ago by Alaena Night in I'm Looking For...
There probably aren't raws for many/any kodomo manga available, though someone will undoubtedly prove me wrong. As a learner, though, it's a good idea to pick up a series you love. When I started teaching myself Japanese, I just picked up a se ...
What's your bedtime?
(55 posts, 2826 views) Posted: 508d 3h, 57m ago by Alaena Night in Chatter Box
Weird but true: before college, I did not have a bedtime. I regularly stayed up all night until 8 in the morning or later, and I slept the day away. Unfortunately, that doesn't work well when my days are filled with classes and work. Now, I usually go to bed sometime ...

Sorry, I just have to say that this thread makes me quite happy.

I am a huge fan of suffering bishies. (I like all sorts of suffering biggrin ) /SHOT DEAD If you have any recommendations of any genre, I'd love to hear them. I'm afraid there aren't very ...
Which manga does this pic belong to?
(3 posts, 607 views) Posted: 544d 0h, 28m ago by Alaena Night in I'm Looking For...
The first page says it's Utau! Heiankyou by Mashiba Shin. It looks interesting, but it doesn't seem as if it's been scanlated. The scanlations for the page you have seem to be in Chinese. Thank goodness they left the mangaka's name in Jap ...

New Poll - Bad Spelling/Grammar
(81 posts, 7634 views) Posted: 591d 1h, 4m ago by Alaena Night in News
I picked "Definitely annoyed!" for reasons I can't quite understand—probably because many, many moons ago, I used to get terribly disappointed at the use of bad grammar because grammar is wonderful and lovely to me. (Yes, I am an incorrigi ...
Why is it a tragedy?
(3 posts, 911 views) Posted: 661d 3h, 43m ago by Alaena Night in Immortal Rain
Some characters die, but not necessarily enough to categorize this as a tragedy. Certain events are rather tragic (especially the backstory of some of the characters) but I don't think that any of that should keep you from reading. This series actually has a ...
Do you cuss?
(521 posts, 43241 views) Posted: 722d 3h, 39m ago by Alaena Night in Chatter Box
Not much. For the most part, I think like a sailor and speak like a saint. I subscribe to the idea that cursing is a standby when you can't think of a better insult. Most of the harsh cursing is directed at myself—quick and effective. When I insult other people (mental ...

Do light novels have better stories than manga?
(18 posts, 3745 views) Posted: 738d 8h, 50m ago by Alaena Night in Manga General
Quote from Pionfou
Judging story quality of two entire mediums based on a sample random selection of anime adaptations is ridiculous. I can list plenty of good manga based anime adaptations: Ghost in the Shell, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Haibane Renmei, Honey ...
Do light novels have better stories than manga?
(18 posts, 3745 views) Posted: 738d 10h, 31m ago by Alaena Night in Manga General
@ Blique: I think you have excellent points and I also believe you've come to the right conclusion, but I don't think it's merely a matter of the place from which they draw their inspiration.

Instead, I think it's a matter of development. Although ...
Realistically Drawn Manga
(11 posts, 901 views) Posted: 758d 1h, 25m ago by Alaena Night in I'm Looking For...
Brain-dead right now, but Kokou no Hito is a good one with a much more realistic style, especially as you go on. It's unbelievable, and the manga is top-notch. It's excellent to begin with, but once the introduction is done and the story starts getting psycho ...
What is your height and weight?

Female
5'7 (170cm)
123 lbs (55.8 kg)

I'm afraid I'm one of those awful Americans in addition to being wretched at everything mathematical. I hereby own up to the fact that I used a conversion calculator for these. I hope they're accurate. ^ ...

These might work. I strongly recommend Nabari, especially, if you haven't already read it. (It starts out "good"... but it quickly becomes absolutely excellent.)

Di(e)ce
