Description
Destination is a state of mind. This is the tale of a person and a bike and the never-ending road ahead. Kino wanders the world on the back of Hermes - an intelligent, talking motorcycle - only staying in one country for three days.
During their adventures they come across happiness, sadness, pain, decadence, violence, beauty, and wisdom. But through it all, they never lose their sense of freedom. They discover that the world is a thing of beauty precisely because of this delicate balance between perfection and imperfection.
The world is not beautiful, therefore it is.

..start this sooner?!
I watched and rewatched the anime years ago when we still had an anime channel in Israel.
Needless to say, I loved it.
But for some lame reason I looked down on the "light novel" version of it.
What an idiot I sometimes am.
Basically, this is tragic and beautiful and oh so gut-wrenching that I can't stop gawking at my screen while reading this, like so: O___O
The stories are basically hypothetical aspects of life cut down into small pieces and magnified into extremities.
Sure, it has a calm feeling to it that sometimes borderlines on stoic, but there's so much... STUFF going on there. All the places Kino visits are different aspects of humanity... And humanity sucks pretty often, but when you throw some travelling and sci-fi elements to it you get this.
I don't know where I'm going with this comment, but I think anyone and everyone should read this.
Do yourself a favor today.

The height of the light novel experience.

I have to admit coming into this that this is one of the few series that I am heavily biased towards. It's calm- almost meditative- but still complex and strikingly thought-provoking. Kino's unique experiences are all essentially advanced parables- containing a clear lesson about society told through exaggerations and intricate human interaction. The lessons can vary greatly in content, but the essential idea- which the series actually utilizes as its catchphrase- is always ubiquitous. The world's lack of beauty makes it beautiful in and of itself. This concept is played around with in a variety of ways, and I have come to really respect the statement, as it holds a lot of truth to it.
I would recommend this is anyone with a little patience and an interest in human nature.
