A Surprisingly Realistic & Unique Manga

I thought that this is gonna be one of those typical trap manga Otakus usually read for moe but boy was I wrong. It is a very unique manga that deals with the ugly topics in life which you won't ever find in manga. Unlike most manga, this manga has moved beyond petty idealistic notions like right vs wrong and good vs evil. It deals directly with people's actions and the motives for their actions follow by the consequences of those actions. It's not a tragedy. It's not about being selfish and it certainly isn't about transgender. It's about life and the choices people make in life that ultimately determine the way they live. It is by far, the manga with the most realistic setting that I've ever read. It's a shame they axed it when it had so accurately lay out the things in life in which people tend to over look.

A Refreshing Tragedy

Kyou Kara Yoshinmai is a story about selfishness and the tragic consequences it has on a family. Sakura wants to experience teenage romance, but only on her own terms. Momiji wants to be left alone in her separate world of manga and videogames. Botan wants to continue having an affair with her coworker, even though she knows he's lying when he says he'll eventually leave his wife. And Kashiwa wants to become a woman, and erase any evidence that he was ever a man.
Each and every one of the characters in this manga wants something selfish with no regard to how it affects others around them. But it does affect everyone around them, and the characters are forced to come to acknowledge this in the only way that can come about when no one works together; watching slowly as their family falls apart, and realizing in hindsight what they had lost.
Kyou Kara Yoshinmai is a tragic comedy about very flawed, very human characters. You will laugh, and then you will cry.

Well rounded cast of characters!.... In theory.

First, I love the art style, this manga is what every slice of life story SHOULD look like--it's light, fluffy, and the panels are well thought out and not overcrowded at all.
In addition, I initially liked the main character and the trap-older brother/sister character, with the MC's love interest in the sidelines at first. However, where the manga dropped the ball hard for me was just how immature and outright shallow those three characters revealed themselves to be very early on.
1) The main character's initial love interest: So this guy, having been the MC's friend for years realizes his feelings for the MC and confesses to her. I thought, "what a mature guy," when he still didn't give up after the MC ignored his confession, and thought he'd remain a source of strong emotional support for the MC as she tried to get over her now shattered brother complex. HOWEVER (and this ticks me off to no end) the moment he sees the MC's brother (now a girl), he immediately forgets about his love for the MC and falls in love with her instead. And when he is told she was a he, he pathetically limps back to the MC. I want to jump this guy.
2) The MC forgets about the guy's immaturity/sheer stupidity and starts showing feelings for him.
...um, WHAT? It ultimately shows just how shallow a character she is, yet she's supposed to be a full adolescent.
3) The Trap-older brother is an insensitive a-hole toward his family. He originally planned to have a sex change without telling his family, and the story outright tells us that he's only returned to his family now just because he needed money. Now this wouldn't be so bad if only it was played right, but there is such a jarring contrast to his/her attempts to act like a mature sibling (as when rejecting the stupid kid from#1) and his rather petty/pathetic reason for showing up after all these years that you can't help but hate the guy for being such a hypocrite and inconsiderate to his family.
I'm sorry, this is just annoying to read. 3/10
