Entertaining and disappointing at the same time

This series would have been one of my all-time favorites. I remember reading it as it was being translated and enjoying the humor and the growth of all the characters. It evoked a lot of good feelings and I found myself rooting for everyone. But at the same time, as the series continued, it started to feel like it was being drawn out and I realized that the titular Megane-chan stagnated as a character to the point of irrelevance. Never before have I read a manga where one of the supposed main characters becomes a joke that's more of an obstacle to the rest of the story than anything else. Adachi Hana never grew from being a cheap gag and in the end it seems like she never belonged in the story at all, to the point that

she gets removed from the final chapters
, with no effort to give her a true backstory. It really cheapened the struggle of the male protagonist whose romantic subplot got tragically side-lined. It really spoils all the character growth that he displayed over the course of the series and feels like the author scrapped any romantic development that the series could have had, aside from a few side-characters who get a passing mention at the end.

If I were to recommend this series, it could be on the strengths of its male protagonist alone. Shinagawa Daichi was the real star, and you get to see him grow a lot during the course of the story, although mostly everyone else gets an honorary mention as they all are quite likeable and sympathetic.

It was a fun journey, but like many manga, the ending leaves something to be desired.

Hana disappears and then comes back right at the end

I've noticed that to be an on going theme for many manga. A great journey that leads to either a bullshit ending where nothing in the journey mattered or its complete inconclusive and vague.

This was one of my favourite series growing up. I put off finishing it because I heard about the bad ending but I didnt expect it to be as bad as it is. Could there not be at least an extra chapter to sum things up? There were so many ways to end this. I'm going to search for info on the ending from the author in hopes that I'll find answers on some random forum.

No answers. She explains nothing in her interview. I am so mad. How hard is it to at least share information in interviews. I don't know. But I feel so hurt. I loved this series and it's characters and it ended with no explanation. I am sad and angry. Wow. So angry. I'm just going to pretend the last two chapters weren't real and it ended at graduation with Daichi's touching speech. After that on the first day of Tono U and in the following weeks when he can't find Adachi he takes a year out to search for her. The computer club research her and hack into the police database or some other bs and find info on Hana. It's hella dangerous so everyone gets together to find Adachi's parents and they convince grandma to help. Through some sort of emotional stupid naive and unrealistic but touching talk or whatever Hana's parents are like you know what we don't need you and disown her or whatever. And Hana and Shinigawa go Tono U together. So many tears at this point. Happy go lucky chapters of life in Tono where Shinigawa and the other guy confess to Adachi. Maybe time skip now where we get to the future and Shinigawa ENJOYS being a teacher? Because I think he would. And Hana is a police officer maybe. Who knows. Maybe a wedding chapter just for wish fulfilment because the two of them would be so so happy together. And everyone can be there to celebrate. Maybe even Hana's parents will drop by somehow. I want my stupid and touching ending.

I would still recommend. Read it and pretend the last two chapters aren't real and it was an open end instead of a nonsensical out of character ending where schizophrenia in the main character is the most realistic explanation. I could accept it but it is so hard. I'll try to read it again

No. Unacceptable. That was an absolutely rude ending. The worst

If you can stomach Hana's personality and enjoy comedy / school life series, this will be a fairly enjoyable read. However...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's one thing to decide not to reveal almost anything about one of the two main characters, but that ending. This is the first I've ever had a mind = blown experience because of a series' ending. There's a bad feeling I had about 20-30 chapters before the ending, but not only was Hana's past apart from being a deliquent left completely untouched, she disappeared and reappeared without much explanation.

In a nutshell, good series, ending should never be read by anyone. "Bad" doesn't even get close to describing it.

Yamada-kun should have ended, and this continue

At the time this ended, Yamada-kun had reached its conclusion and read as though one should be expecting the end. This manga's ending screams of being axed, as though a business decision was made to extend Yamada-kun instead. I would have given this series a 10 if the ending weren't so audaciously bad.

Looking back I think this manga was extremely interesting.
I liked the fact that this group of misfits managed to become great friends and meet even more people. It is funny, but doesn't go for the overkill, it has some serious moments but it's not melodramatic. It was a good showcase of a highschool experience and it showed the characters having fun and being serious about their futures and their lives.
It lacked a lot in the romance department and in developing one of the most important relationships in the story. In the end it felt really rushed and it seemed that the mangaka was just trying anything and everything. Why introduce one character for about three chapters or so when she had no point in being in the story in the first place?
The last chapter? I don't know what to say. Nothing solved, a return that is both weird and out of place, not the best or even decent way to end such a pleasant journey.

I thought it was okay in the beginning and took up the series again after like 6 months but to be honest? I don't think I'll ever finish it.... Adachi is just too annoying for me... I've tried and I can't go on

I was hoping for a sad yet inspiring ending now that adachi disappeared. unfortunately, years of building up a great solid story came crashing down, crumbled in ruins, all because of that bad ending... so bad that I have to go to a psychologist to get rid of what I've just read. GOD KILL ME NOW! I'm so very disappointed to Miki Yoshikawa right now... I hope Yamada-kun to 7-nin no majo doesn't get the same treatment....

I really enjoyed this series, read it multiple times over the years as it was being published. But the ending was atrocious. Sure, sometimes you might not like an ending but in this case a) I dont see how anybody could like it and b) its unclear if there really was an ending. One of the two main characters gets written out of the series with no explanation and then (possibly) reappears on the last page (as she hasnt aged its unclear if it isnt just Shiagawa daydreaming) for no real reason either. It was a nonsensical mess.

That ending...

I've been reading manga for 15 years and I've seen a lot of rushed, unsatisfying endings. It's unfortunately something that happens a lot in a serialized medium. When an author gets word that their series is getting cut they don't necessarily have time to tie everything up at the end. Even so, I was amazed by how phenomenally bad the execution here was.

After 23 volumes we are left with an ending that resolves nothing and explains nothing. Heck, one of the titular characters was basically written out of the story towards the end, without any justification. The idiotic and contrived twist in the epilogue did not help. Some new characters were introduced in the final arc and then weren't around long enough to actually do anything...what was the point of introducing them? Maybe that time could have been spent not completely neglecting the main characters, hmm?

It was a fun decent series with one of the worst endings I've ever read. And that just leaves a bad taste in the mouth...
