Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth-grader in Japan: a pretty normal schoolboy with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics. One day, he finds an old bloodstained Go board in his grandfather's attic and that's when things get really interesting. 10, have it.
One of few manga's ive read that i consider to read again in future.
Feels generic at first but after you finish it you know that there is nothing else like that.
What makes it better than the other shounens? Plausibility, well of course im not really saying about supernatular aspect but the general main theme, which is competiton in a sport.
Author really grasped this thing while performing sublime process of growing the main characters in this aforementioned competition. Its really amazing when you compare last volume to the first one.
The difference in behavior and look of main characters is noticeable to the shock of reader. Its like, we don't see ourselves growing from day to day but we do when we compare old photos.
Masterpiece.
PS. This manga DOES NOT require from you to know anything about GO.

Woooah, I really love this manga.
It made me laugh and it made me cry...Damn it Sai!!
Even though after the first chapters Go was too complicated for me to undertsand anymore it was great.
BUT..the end! THE END! It´s horrible. I mean there`s soo much that`s not...yeah quite finished.
It was like the story ended half-way.
Well it gets a 9.99999999999 from me.
Read it! or watch

Slightly weak ending but great overall [at least for a ten year old]. kind of like a chihayafuru for a younger demographic.
I'm not sure whether someone my age would like this series as much as i did back then, though.

This was the first manga I read, and it made me fall utterly in love. I started it on a whim, because I was vaguely interested in reading about Go, but I never would have expected to get hooked on it so quickly. I reread it for the first time yesterday, and even though I read it before I found myself almost tearing through my books. The plot it really gripping, even though at first I kept thing, hey, it's a boardgame, not the end of the world! But in a way that's what makes it so special. The passion the characters have for the game is infectious, and all of the characters are wonderful.
It isn't flawless, but I have yet to find another series as engrossing as this one. (For me, even though it's very different, Silver Diamond comes close.)

I just finished the series and I must say it was very good. I still have a bitter feeling because of the ending, but I think it was a logical conclusion. The characters grew throughout the story and by the time you reach the end you can see exactly where they all stand, and where they want to go with their lives. Some people complain that all the loos-ends were not tied up, which is true, however, I feel like most of them didn't need to be. The relationship between Hikaru and Akira is clear and the situation between Sai and Akira's dad ended in a logical way.
Overall, this manga was surprisingly good. I never expected to be so captivated by a story revolving around a board game. The characters really do make the story, and once you finish they will continue to hold a place in your heart.

I think I've reread this manga at least 10 times.. and I've never gotten bored of it.
The plot is absolutely AMAZING and gripping. I don't know what makes it so good, but I can't stop reading it! It makes you become so involved with everyone and everything!
The artwork is also beautiful. At first, it seems simple, but then I realized that as the manga progressed, the characters slowly changed and began to look more mature. I didn't even notice until I looked back on the first few chapters, but the change is pretty big but really really well done.
The characters are INCREDIBLY likeable to me I get extremely attached to some characters... such as touya akira :3 Also, the passion is really inspiring and amazing to read about/sense actually. It even inspired me to try to play go, but I stopped immediately after realizing I absolutely suck LOL
Overall, my favorite manga of all time possibly... and I've read a LOT XD WOWW can I give this manga a 100000/10? haha

this manga pull you in and never let go until the end. you cant put it down however much you want because you must, you need to know what happens next. for a manga that relies on a board game, this is a very incredible feat.
the characters are excellent, well rounded individuals that you can symphatised on. the plot, though using a touch of the supernatural is very logical and believable in its way. the pacing is superb and the arts are perfect for the atmosphere of this manga.
some people are dissatisfied with the ending. for me however, this is appropriate - for a manga with this much gravitas, it only need to rely on realism as wish fulfillment plot will only ruin it.

the ending was disappointing but it is great the anime is awesome too. It captivated you to keep reading and watching, you feel motivated to play with them. Nothing is your typical manga, it's unique. This was my favorite manga, but the ending was disappointing it was rushed, I wish their was another season. rumor states that Hotta yumi based the story off a real player but got sued so they had to rush it...
Great.

This isn't the type of action-y fast paced manga, but it is really entertaining. The plot was well developed and the characters were easy to fall in love with. The only down side is that the ending was sort of blah. And though I don't really like it, I understand why the author ended it that way since it sort of marked a new beginning for Hikaru.
