Description
By night, junior high student Yoshimori Sumimura is a "kekkaishi"--a demon-hunter who specializes in creating magical barriers around his prey. By day, Yoshimori's got some other demons to battle: an addiction to sweets and a seriously crotchety grandfather! Yoshimori's pretty 16-year-old neighbor and childhood friend, Tokine Yukimura, is also a kekkaishi, but their families are feuding over who is the true practitioner of the art.

Won the 52nd Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category.

Very Good

I can see why some would not like it (my sisters judge it because they don't like the art and the way the heroes start out fighting with "boxes") but I think this is definitely one of the better series out there. It does start out really slow and it can occasionally be a little stupid but as the series goes on it gets much more complex and interesting. The characters really flesh out and become human and the villains become less flat. The morally gray areas of politics are also introduced. What I like the best is that the characters do find out more unique ways of using these "boxes" and change their form, specialty, strength, etc, and their ability to use them diverges. The main character is funny and yes, naturally strong though he can't get his head in the game at first,

and although I don't particularly like Yoshimori's brother, he's intriguing and I can understand his jealousy. I also love the Urukai characters he commands. Especially Sen and... what's-his-name, the amiable (usually) vampire with the squinty eyes and the kid with the paper bag over his head, lol.
So yes, it's exciting, with a good plot, many loveable characters, and I even liked the ending, which for me is pretty rare.

One of the best original series

I think the manga is quite original and interesting enough to pull us in with so many intriguing plots and arcs. Every part of it just makes some development to the characters, and the readers can also see the running idea of Kekkaishi. The artwork isn't much of premise and sometimes the inner side of some characters is chilling down my spine (namely Masamori), but I think overall the progression is good. Compared to its peers in the same category, the manga delivers the same ecstasy but I personally found this bit better with its constant dark atmosphere and unpredictable conclusion. And I like it best when the scanlators are on the job, no offense.

I'm not sure why people don't like the slow start. I quite enjoyed it. That said, I hope Kekkaishi comes to an end sometime. It would be very nice to have a good ending to this awesome series.

The only problems I had with it were that Yoshimori spends about the first half being a blundering doof, and the second half being really too powerful for his own good. Especially in the anime, where his tendency to fall over and screw up seems to be somehow magnified a couple hundred times, despite having transcribed right from the manga. However, it's mostly overlookable in the manga.

Gets better and better, soon it'd be one of the best

Kekkaishi starts off rather feebly, with a cliche shounen cast of characters and settings. It almost seems to be a bastard child of Bleach until after the 100 chapter mark, when the Kokuburou Arc comes to an end and so does the "Monster of the Week" chapters. That is the turning point of Kekkaishi as the cast and world expands beautifully and transforms from a shounen cliche into an truly interesting manga.

The longer it runs the better it gets, if you find the weak beginning hard to follow you can always watch the anime as a slightly more bearable shortcut since it covers the manga until Vol 12. Despite its weak start it steadily improves as the chapters increase: the art, the plot and the characters all improve and develop so don't be too hasty in judging it.

Honestly I consider Kekkaishi to be the one of the best examples of the shounen cliche done right.

NEVER misjudge this one

Yes, I understand that it may be a bit slow at the start and only picks up after 50 chapters. However, if you have the patience for it, just read it through, and it would be paid off.

The real story starts at around chapter 50, and many readers who have not read the other 250 (and counting) chapters find it boring, overrated, etc. BUT! Don't EVER judge a book by its cover, even if it is 50 chapters long. Personally, I feel that this series deserves as much compliment as the other top series.

Kekkaishi is a really interesting series with a really interesting premise. It´s really unpopular compared to others shounen series (Fairy Tail, One Piece, Naruto and Bleach comes to mind) because of it's SLOW start, but it gets really good later on. IF you can struggle the early volumes, you'll not get disappointed.

that is true tiger...
@wako: don't consider yourself a big holy judge if you only manage to read 3 vol of the manga...
and you might not get this:
their ability is only one "to manipulate space", but if you do have imagination in you, then their ability is limitless... making space, destroying it and whatever that is in it, fixing things, walking trough wall, make arrows, make a hole inside your opponent's body, distorting space around you, rejecting everything, fixing up space, make a worm hole like thingy that connect two dimension. and many more... but the greatest of all is: become a god of your own space where your rule is so absolute to the point where if you want to even the dead is back alive.

but, having said that, really, you should just disregard what wako944 has said, since he couldn't be more wrong. kekkaishi is far deeper and far better than that. of course he'd make such a narrow minded judgment, having only read 26 chapters, and others before me have mentioned that kekkaishi starts slow, but you know i'm not saying that despite only reading 26 chapters he's not entitled to not enjoy it, since that's merely his experience. but to mislead others, that's what i can't stand for.

Wow, I don't quite know where to begin. After hearing all these good things about this manga and reading 16 chapters, I have to say that I am extremely disappointed. For the first five chapters, I was beyond bored but, I somehow managed to muscle my way through, hoping to see what made this series so appealing to others. But, to no avail. Ten chapters later, the story is still bland and repetitive.

Let me summarize what EVERY single chapter has been thus far:

1. Yoshimori, the male lead, pesters his secret crush (who is extremely cliche: childhood friend, next door neighbor, perfect student, idol of many male students, etc...) on the way to school.

2. Yoshimori sleeps in class, the teacher annoys him to open his book but he doesn't care. The author then uses his classmates to spit out a page or two of nonsensical dialogue and then the school day ends.

3. Both the main characters fight the monsters. Monsters are poorly designed and fights could not be blander because the heroes use the same attacks/skills EVERY SINGLE TIME (rasengan, anyone?).

4. Male lead goes home to sleep or make a castle made of cake or candy. (Apparently, it's the main character's passion/dream to make a castle of candy.)

5. Yoshimori wakes up to his stupid grandfather who is annoying, they fight over breakfast.

6. Repeat.

If you're looking for a plotless manga that has poor character design and uses Japanese religion/spirits as a base, then this manga is for you.

Starts slow but gets better

Sure the character is pretty typical shonen (ala ichigo and naruto) but somehow even with all the supernatural elements, this series seems realistic. The guy is quite likeable and lead female protagonist is also the same cliche smart childhood friend but you can't help but root for Yoshimori getting Tokine even tho she is 2 years older than him lol... their care for each other grows slowly but its quite noticeable that she is sort of beginning to accept him more and.... lets not spoil it any further bigrazz
Oh, and his mother & elder brother dynamic rocks. READ THIS NAO!
