Legend has it that if a human eats a mermaid's flesh, they will be granted eternal life. But is that a blessing or a curse? Immortal lovers Yuta and Mana travel through Japan and the centuries longing for a normal life. On their journey, they meet others who have consumed the flesh of a mermaid in hope of becoming immortal. But the powerful substance affects each person differently. Yuta and Mana are two of the lucky ones. Others are fated to die or transform into a savage monster, a "lost soul." Mermaid Saga contains three of Takahashi's uniquely macabre mermaid tales, A Mermaid Never Smiles, The Village of the Fighting Fish, and Mermaid Forest. Each revolves around Yuta, who wanders for hundreds of years, seeking a mermaid to cure him of his immortality.

Having been a Takahashi fan for a very long time I actually think that this is her best manga. She didn't rush it like her big series so she could focus much more on the story. I love the whole death issue and Takashashi handles it beautifully, It's very nice that we not only follow Yuta and mana in the pressent, but also goes back and hear about Yuta's life before he met mana, it works really well, and gives a lot of depth to Yuta's personallity. With Takahashi it's really easy to tell if she's really putting her heart into a story, and I think this one and One Pound Gospel, her shortest series, are the ones where I feel it the most. This is a beautiful manga that shouldn't be missed.

you don't come across many horror-themed manga as developed and original as Mermaid Saga, and that makes it all the more enjoyable. I love how many of the stories touched upon many different time period with a developed cast of characters. the series itself is enthralling, beginning to end smile

Just realised that I am extremely unobservant -ignore the previous comment.
I have not finished reading this series, but I absolutely love it. If anyone has read her other comics the progress she has made in her art is remarkable, but this is one of my favourite stories.

A bit dark compared to all of her other works but a nice change of pace.

Interesting macabre and gory tales with some touches of light humor and romance. Worth reading if you're a fan of Rumiko Takahashi; otherwise, her other works are better IMHO.

This is great. It is a very sad story. The story main objective is show how merciless immortality can be.
