I read this manga just to pass the time but like most are saying here its way too typical, for a person who has never 'ever' read shoujo manga i imagine its a good 10/10. If your a person like me who has read many shoujo mangas and looking for something unique then this is not the manga for you, its full of the bad boy treats air head girl like you-know-what( Don't Read It). @_@ Warning stay away!

@ other comments
I agree with Criminal Intent Tsubaki was never a strong heroine she was weak from the beginning! Read Skip Beat ,Lovely Complex,Dengeki Daisy and etc.

Is it me or I find this story to be interesting?
For one thing though, this is one of the very few mangas that Minami Kanan wrote that doesn't really involve sex. The romance in here is kind of typical but at least it isn't really typical like some mangas. The main character at first was SO cool but then, she became weaker and the jerk became nicer (it balances). I really enjoy this story and I'll keep reading it until the end.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I'm a huge smut fan (go ahead, sue me), but the thing is, I only read smut because it's a guilty pleasure. The characters and storyline? Don't care. But Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu is a series that has conquered me completely in a way more than just reading it for the smut as originally planned.

In most smut series, the girl is a defenseless idiot, and it leaves you thinking most of the time just what the hell the males see in her. It's always the same rinse-and-repeat plot of "haha, I'm an evil douchebag, I shall take your virginity away" and the girls, being idiots, always think the same of "ohhh no, please don't touch me!" but over time, they fall for the guy and think "ohhh, I don't care if he doesn't love me, he can go ahead and fuck me all he wants".

In Kyou Koi, the male is still the douchebag who wants to screw the girl just for the sake of screwing her. And Tsubaki, of course, stands by the whole "ohhhh no, dont touch" that follows, as mentioned above.

HOWEVER, the difference between this is I actually felt something for Tsubaki. Even after she fell for the guy (typical shoujo), she stood by her decisions and morals of say, not letting Kyouta touch or kiss her if he didn't mean it. Basically, she didn't want to be toyed around with.

Even if she is pathetic when compared to any other girl in the universe, in shoujo, the girl standing by her previous morals and crap even after falling in love is HUGE. Normally it's "oh shit, I fell in love. k lets forget about everything else, my morals go out the window". I liked that Tsubaki didn't suddenly decide to become Kyouta's plaything just because she fell in love. During their first date, she gets pissed that Kyouta is in it for the sex, and when he's about to put the moves on, she gets pissed at him and ditches him, dissing him on being just a womanizer ("Is this how you treat all girls?" or something like that).

Then when she's at school, and she walks in on Kyouta and that other girl, and then Kyouta wants to touch her and shit, she gets pissed and says "Don't touch me if you don't mean it." That seriously formed a knot in my stomach of pity and sadness for Tsubaki, and I was shocked that I could actually feel for her. Tsubaki, a shoujo character!

I liked that she stood by her morals, no matter what. And when the whole sex situation comes up, she still goes by her morals of wanting to walk down the virgin aisle. Of course, as most teenagers, she gets pressured into having sex. She almost gives in, but is terrified of it (so at least she doesn't think "Oh god, I'll give him my virginity because I love him so much and I want him"), and I honestly don't think she would have gone through with it either way.

Then they don't end up smeckzing, cause Kyouta turns out to be not such a huge prick and actually takes her feelings into consideration then, and promises her not to rush her into anything (A shoujo male saying that. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!). I was so shocked. For once, a male lead takes the girl's morals and feelings into consideration! For once, he doesn't say "fuck it" and screws her anyway! Wow!

I know that this isn't much to go by, and it isn't that impressive overall, but if you compare it to other Minami Kanan series or most shoujos out there, Kyouta and Tsubaki are pretty much amazing.

Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu stands by it's shoujo roots, yet unlike most shoujos, there's actual character development (especially in Kyouta) and the plot itself doesn't revolve around sex, sex, and sex. In fact, there's no sex at all!

It's quite shocking, really. But I enjoy this series. It's a nice change from those asshole-playboys-target-defenseless-females manga out there.

I'm surprised to say I'm not as disappointed with this series as I thought I would be when I first started reading it. Now this, along with Hapi Mari, are the only series I'm following very closely. I've given up on reading manga for the most part. : P

Good job, Minami Kanan. You finally learned to write not such shit series.

EDIT: I feel I gotta add this, after re-reading the first 3 volumes of the series (volume 2's quality just is... *shudder*). I think I understand the reason why my heart breaks for Tsubaki near the beginning. I can relate to her. Can't all the girls here? I know how it is having an unrequited love, particularly one that's not serious about relationships. & I know a lot girls think "a fling is better than nothing", but take it from me, that fling will just cause more pain & emotional attachment, so it is not something you want.

It's... it's so sad. ;__;

When I first read this manga I thought it be just pure smut. However, I'm happy to find out that it has at times shown some depth with the characters. The male lead in the story Kyouta so reminds me of Boy I use to attended school. He would always flirt with the girls at my school at get caught making out with some of them by teachers...lol

Anyway, he was always angry at me for never accepting a date with him and often times tried to kiss me when no one was looking. When I read this manga it makes me remember him and wonder what happen to the guy. I found Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu to no great but a pretty good shoujo to read.

this manga is good and I like it. the art is pretty and the storyline is cute. but sometimes the characters are SO annoying. I mean, they cause all of the drama themselves. I wish they coiuld just be more honest.

I'm really glad this author changed her style. I've always liked her art but her stories were just an excuse to display some sex, there wasn't a meaningful plot at all. But this work is the complete opposite, the characters have a real background to start with. I guess the heroine is still the same, weak against the usual aggressive boy, but at least she's not completely defenseless. She has moments when she stands up for what she thinks is important to her and the boy is not always there to save her when she needs help like she was a lifeless doll uncapable of anything but crying.
I wouldn't mind if there is smut later, as long as, once the characters become closer, that won't be the only thing they think about until the end of the manga, like in the previous works.

Well at first i thought, shoujo and smut.
But then in the chapter where she said she wont have sex,
becouse its for making babies,
was sooo funny. It really made the manga interesting !
i really hope, that she keeps the 'babie idea'
becouse i think they way they want to have sex is wrong.

wow i'm sorry to say this was bad from the start, the guy is terribly mean, the girl was sorta cute but 100 percent unbelievable-- it looked like she was making herself look bad on purpose because this is the only way it could make sense that when she does let her hair down she becomes beautiful!?! (i'll let this go sometimes but here it was just stupid)
*sighs* this manga is sooo typical all you have to do is read the first 3 chapters and you can imagine the rest in 5 seconds flat

Do not get me wrong, but I do like this manga. The art is good and the plot line development is creative in a shoujo way i guess. BUT I just cannot grasp what is the big hoopla about Kyouta. Just because he is hot all these girls GO WAY MAD CRAZY?!?! They stalk him, hurt other girls, and worship him like he is a god. At least make him rich or something to compensate for that horrible jerk personality!!!

Kyouta does act like a jerk in the beginning, but slowly we begin to understand his reasons why. Are they valid? Sort of. Are they excusable? No. But we begin to see a change when in him when he finally starts to regain his trust in women.

Also, we must understand that Hibino was never a "strong" character, she was just socially awkward. Hibino was book smart not street smart, she didn't know how to interact w/ people around her so she just did some things that offhandedly offended people. This wasn't strength, it was just social naivety. So when she gets into a relationship of course she's gonna cry and all that jazz, b/c she is still a shoujo heroine, she's just naive in a different way.

While this series isn't exactly Newbery Award material, it still manages to keep your attention.
