While Katagiri is the ideal husband material, what also powerfully struck me was the manner in which Ritsu's story was narrated. It’s not about Ritsu’s personality, or characterization, that stayed with me the most, though that was also endearing, but the way in which bit by bit Ritsu talks to Katagiri about his life, and the manner in which Katagiri listens to Ritsu. It's nice to see some meaningful conversations taking place in yaoi for a change.
Second to this narrative style, I would also date Nao, Ritsu’s cousin and close confidant, if he was gay and single. Such a lovely person. Also, Clasp is simply adorable. Just as much as Ritsu whom she symbolically stands in for.

WHY THE LOW RATINGS? KATAGIRI IS LIKE, THE MOST HUSBAND-MATERIAL SEME I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED I MEAN DOES SOMEONE LIKE HIM EXIST AHSKSHDKSSHIAAJA not fond of Ritsu but lol he's decent (i'm sad that this manga is lacking something. Ritsu didn't really show his sincerity to Katagiri but oh well he:s decent lol)
So pleasantly sweet

A very balanced mix of fluff and romance in a piece of fiction sprinkled with real life concerns, this manga is guaranteed to brighten up your day and put a smile on your face. The story is simple but very well told, and although the seme is so unrealistically spotlessly perfect it could only happen in fantasy, I'd say 'so what?' to that because this still is a very heartwarming manga and I thoroughly enjoyed it, which is truly what matters the most to me at the end of the day after all logic talk has been left behind.
The story is average, but...

Katagiri is probably THE most decent seme in the yaoi genre. He's kind, polite, affectionate and a really good person -- and not in that gross "clingy crybaby" way most "nice" seme tend to be, either. Unlike a run-of-the-mill seme, who's attractive but whom you wouldn't want within a one-mile radius of yourself, he's the sort of guy you wouldn't mind knowing personally.
The plot and relationship progression were fairly realistic, and while I appreciated that in itself the story became somewhat plain by consequence. Ritsu wasn't especially interesting, but an okay protagonist mainly by virtue of being a normal person instead of a living embodiment of uke stereotypes. Another element I really liked was the side character, Ritsu's cousin. Most of the time the person in his role is a "friend" who's obsessed with the MC - giving rise to a pointless love triangle - or a brother with a creepy brother complex. In this case, the cousin proved to be just the right kind of confidant/supporter: concerned and considerate but not overbearingly so, and with a lovely wife and kid of his own. Ritsu's cat, Clasp, was adorable in an odd sort of way, too.
The art is classic Kinoshita Keiko: sketchy and sparse, not "sexy" at all. But it's more suited to this kind of quiet slice-of-life manga than a typical yaoi art style.
Do you like softcore yaoi with slow (for BL, anyway) romance? Do you prefer your seme gentle and considerate instead of possessive and sex-crazed? Then Ai Koso Subete is for you.
