How I wish more was translated

This is a great slice of life manga.
The character dynamics are so interesting, Rei's relationship with the other cast of characters through the course of the manga is really engaging. I love how these relationships are explored.

I do wish that Rei would raise his shoji game as his career really seems to have stalled after the first few volumes up until the current raw chapters. Hopefully he will start to make a comeback sooner rather than later.

I only have 2 criticisms to make:
The pace of the mange slows down considerably after the first few volumes as the manga focuses on the different shoji players besides Rei. Most of which I don't care about. Feels a lot like the shonen element of showing the past/perspective of each enemy our heroes face in shonen manga, even the small fry.
My second gripe is that so little of the manga has been translated. Only 38 out of 104 chapters have been translated. If this had been translated at a greater rate over the years, I am sure it would have been a lot more popular outside of Japan.

Differently of the past opinions, from the first time I saw this manga and star reading I got hook. The style of the drawing is smooth and clean, love the pace in which is unfold, the characters are very centered. Didn't notice that it has been a long run since I started this manga but still worth the wait.

Seriously, people should stop judging manga by the art.
This is SEINEN... just look at the magazine it is serialized.
Demographics are not genres, it just says "directed to".

Anyway.
i'm glad scanlators keep bringing us this great manga, it has a very nice feeling for me...
an uminoish-feeling :3

At first I wasn't planning on reading this since the art didn't appeal to me (I'm quite busy so I have to choose what I read wisely). Nonetheless, I got some extra time on my hands and now I simply adore this work. It's well worth the time.

This is... really good. The story does have a slow start, but after six or seven chapters, it starts rolling. I read it up to volume three in one go, completely immersed in Kiriyama Rei's world. Rei is often caught in his own pool misery (which is justifiable, since he's been through some tough times), but he slowly learns that he isn't the only one feeling lonely, confused and unsure of himself. This story is slowly dealing with the wounds of his past, and it is beautifully executed.

I really like this story, and I'm impatiently looking forward to the next chapter release. smile

I couldn't get into Sangatsu no Lion the first time I tried it, but it proved to be a lovely manga, especially after the story develops. "Slow but touching" is a spot-on description of this manga. I felt that Sangatsu no Lion was realistic, actually, and I could relate to Rei, especially his thoughts and feelings about shogi. (I play a board game too.)

this is a very down to earth slice of life story... the characters are simple and yet at the same time so deep. Each with their own strength and complex.. The main character is a strong shogi player, but his own complex (feeling of unworthyness as a human being, inferiority complex, etc) makes the appeal.
His interaction with the kind people he met brings him into the journey of his life to search of his own identity..

i doubt many people will like this series with its pacing, but if youre a more slice of life reader, that likes believable characters and strong interactions, this may be your cup of tea

At times I felt the character was a little blase. Depression doesn't do that to a person, and his tragedy happend long ago. When it comes to seinen manga, often times it seems that the manga-ka thinks that making a character like that is more realistic when it isn't.

But it doesn't happen all the time due to the comic having touches of humour. The drama is controlled, so it's not going wild. The character reminiscences about some truely sad moments, and I think that's fine enough as something that truely does happen.

Like Crenshinibon said, the art is a little flowery. I did a double check to see if its maybe listed as josei. It barely affects the art outside the main characters, and that's only rarely. The fact that the manga doesn't go out of its way to use him like that means most "shots" aren't positioned for that effect.

This is a good read.It doesn't put you in a particular mood like very depressive or overly happy. Instead it takes you, moment from moment, to whatever feeling is appropriate.

I can't stand Nikaidou!!!

Before that ***hole Nikaidou entered the story, I would've given it a 10 out of 10. However after an insensitive bast*** ***hole like him came along, I'm demoting this whole thing a full 5 points. Kill him or get rid of him otherwise, but I can't stand that ****ed up shi* of an idiot that repeatedly and always destroys the mood this manga managed to give me. -.-
