Well, It HAD Potential

The first part of the story seems headed toward something wonderfully horrific, unfortunately, much of the threads introduced in the first two-thirds are dropped and the final third seemingly randomly tries to amend this by adding completely unrelated stuff. Had the author stuck with one culture's set of superstitions and beliefs about the supernatural, that would have been enough, or, even better, had she somehow had the two interact from the get-go. As it is, the horror ended up falling flat about half way through the story, and the plot had a forced yet perfect cohesion that really did not work. The pacing is unsteady, the characters are way too flat and dull, and the artwork is middling. Moreover, placing a horror story in an isolated

haunted
location and then making that place a boarding school with adolescent protagonists is a styero-typical modern YA gothic arrangement. Not that any one of these elements is less than mediocre (possibly much better) on their own, but the combination with what I complained about before results in a work whose only virtue is its intriguing premise.

This series has a lot of great build up and suspense, but the ending just doesn't pull it off. Then again, this may be because the

obscure Australian monster reference
just didn't click with an American audience.

All that aside, the art is solid, it's a complete story, and a very good start to Chan's manga career.

I thought this American made manga was amazing. It was completely horrorific and kept you on your toes. I read this when I was 12 (5 years ago) and I ended up checking out all 3 volumes from my school's library.
