What a disappointment...

I won't insert names here but didn't like the final couple at all, this webtoon would be perfect if it wasn't for that, the dynamics were a lot better between the MC and the other lead.

It's a frustrating ending and makes me want to give this a low rating, I kept waiting for the MC to change his mind down to the last chapter... the last frame...

The rest is so good though and that just makes the ending even worse, it's anticlimactic. I don't know how to rate this.

A Cute Story with Budding Drama: Let the Shipping Begin

This Manhwa was an accidental discovery on my part when I was browsing the 19 Days (fantastic BL alternative) tag on Tumblr, and now I follow its English translation as closely as I can, because it's just the right amount of BL I need when I drink my coffee. Unripe Expression is easy enough to follow with likable characters and art style, and has some deeper moments here and there which give the story weight. There is a slice of life vibe and there are tropes in the mix, but this allows the mood to become endearing and familiar, so it easily sinks into the readers' hearts. What I mean to say is, It doesn't bore me. Thank God, haha. Unripe is a fun time.
Sometimes I notice grammatical errors in the translations, but they are not so distracting that I can't correct them in my head and move on with the general meaning understood. The story does not have a large scope of the world contained in it, which is probably based on the author's choice and level of skill, but focuses on a group of teens in a modern location in South Korea, specifically some gay boys, and shipping all of them seems more and more plausible to me as I complete another chapter. At first, I didn't have expectations for anything beyond awkward and adorable Shounen Ai scenes, since the beginning gave off that vibe, but I was pleasantly surprised at the way the main character (I am still unfamiliar with Korean names and the Korean language, if it were Japanese or Chinese I'd probably be able to remember on cue) actually pursues and initiates his romantic crush on the boy sitting beside his desk in class, and relates to him realistically in situations where it is actually plausible to manifest a relationship. He has not been emasculated/Uke-fied so drastically like other BL may fall, sitting around making situations where it is impossible to create real relationships, romantic or otherwise. He's really trying, and I love it. His friend also has an interesting past that puts the slice of life vibe to bed. Ultimately, I'm excited for the potential I see, as the drama and action unfold upon update, I'm all so ready to watch the protagonist actualize his relationships. Woo!

A good start, but the end is suck.

Well, the name speaks for itself, so what we have?

Good:
+ dynamics of infatuation
+ nice main character
+ nice Junseo
+ nice art
+ Junseo and Jaewon's bromance
+ logical behaviour

NOT good:
- a lot of cliche (uh, so many)
- Yoonsung is typical "bad boy, who SUDDENLY appeared and (of course!) he's in love with protagonist".
Where have I seen this before? Oh, right, everywhere.
- Karam is "good boy" and that's the only thing I can say about him. He doesn't even intrigue, I'm just not feeling it! You just... look and see: "Oh. This is a good character" and that's all.
Also we have a cliche "your first love is always reciprocal" but it's only my opinion.

As they say, I'm disappointed, but not surprised.

I was disappointed with the ending. The guy with the least amount of character development and reader investment ended up being the bf. It was still a cute story, but the ending was frustrating and seemed kind of abrupt compared to the pacing of the rest of story.

The story is nice although kinda cliche, I kinda liked the ending although some people will hate it. People need to realize love is not rational and then ending will make sense.

i really liked everything about this story honestly. from the title to the art, to the characters. i even liked the cliches (and this series is brimming with them). the story is wholesome and filled with awkward yet somewhat adorable scenes between boys navigating their love lives and friendships. the mc is refreshing. he doesn’t dilly dally as much as you would expect, and the rest of the cast is also very good. one of the male leads gets a bit of flak from what i’ve seen across reviews, but i suggest reading it and forming your own opinion. for me, overlooking most of the cliches, the progression itself is still pretty realistic. i really enjoyed following this story. it’s got enough romance and a hint of a sad backstory to get you going. i just wish we got a bit more and explored the other characters more.

long winded spoiler comment incoming!

as much as my heart broke for junseo, i had always wanted jaewon to end up w karam (unpopular opinion i guess) because, well, he reaally liked him. and the progression of their relationship was realistic. karam wasn’t sure of his feelings so he rejected jaewon at first, wc was fair imo because karam didn’t want to jump in with uncertainty (i would have been mad if he didn’t realize he liked jaewon soon after that but he did so im happy lol). and jaewon kept liking him despite being rejected. it’s unlikely to immediately switch to liking your close confidant (junseo) just because he confessed to you. it’s true that junseo helped jaewon a lot, but he knew he liked karam fr the beginning. and jaewon didn’t owe him his feelings (and junseo knew it) that’s why junseo is such a good character. his intentions were always pure, and his friendship w jaewon was genuine. i hope they’ll remain as friends and that junseo finds his love. i was atually kind of hoping the story would explore a rivals-to-friends-lovers trope with him and yoonsung. they’re an unlikely pair but it would have been interesting to see how they progress.

anyway idt karam or the endgame deserves all the hate. karam is a decent ml. he started off cautious and maybe even a lil douchey fr how he slightly strung jaewon along but he eventually gained resolve and unabashedly pursued him. his feelings didn’t appear out of thin air either. he was always interested in jaewon. he just wasn’t sure what that interest meant. but who knows, it might just be me being partial to a lead who looks soft and harmless on the outside but can be a bit of a badass in fights and even a lil bit of (just a tiny bit) of an ass. like a good boy w an evil glint in his eyes when he locks in on what he wants LMAO ANYWAY i rly enjoyed this and i want more ^^

They give an intricate and compelling story to one character... and MC chooses someone who has no personality, no story, and overall is just about as interesting as a wet sock. There was character development but it all stagnated at some point. This had so much wasted potential, even if it's rife with cliche.

Junseo Han is <3

If there’s any manga/manhwa that comes close to Sasaki to Miyano, then it’s this one.
The cover art is fabulous as well, and I just love how the story is set up. All of the characters are fleshed out, except for the women but that doesn’t matter because it wasn’t important to the story, and I just love all of them to bits. Each one of them has a background story.
Junseo Han, I wish so much happiness for you. *crying unconsolably* ah, I love all of you so much, so wonderful, so wonderful. It really has been a long time since I have been this moved by a manhwa, since I have recently been only reading trash.

I will admit that it was adorable and entertaining, but I was confident he would end up with the other guy because he had a much deeper relationship with the other guy. Whelp. My ship kinda got obliterated.
