Yes, its cliched. Yes, its overly popular. Yes, the main character is a little ridiculous.
But it is still such a great story!
This is one of the first manga I ever read, and its still so memorable. The world Kishimoto creates is so well developed, and the characters so well articulated. At times its lovable, funny, heartbreaking.
I actually really like the main character, but the great thing about Naruto is that the SIDE CHARACTERS are so fantastic. Usually side characters are ridiculous cliches, but in Naruto these characters have depth and likability.

The most awesome thing I like about this manga is when everyone is debating about "this will happen", or "blabla is going to die soon absolutely", or when I read predictions...
And %80 of the time Kishimoto gives us an answer that noone gave or could think about, I feel proud like I wrote it. He's trying his best imo, and you can see even from the beginning of the shippuuden to now, he still keeps on improving.
"Naruto" as a person, helped me about my helplessness about people and my beliefs.
I am behind Kishi till he finishes this because I am a person that never gives up now.
Noone gave me that much hope or like everyone says "character development"

If you haven't read any of One Piece, Bleach, or Naruto do so now. These three titles are beyond the normal classification of shounen manga in terms of scope, story, and/or character development (One piece in particular is in a league of its own). Reviews don't really matter for any of these manga, whether you like them or not when you're through the journey to get through them is worth it if only to change your view of reading manga itself. I'd even go so far to say that you have no real reason to be on this site if you haven't touched one of these manga, and I still question your eligibility if you have read all three. Get throught the first 20 volumes of each before you stop too, it takes that long to truly see all that the three have to offer.
Now for my humble opinion on Naruto. I used to be a real fan of Naruto (far short of Narutard status though), and Naruto is among the titles that have pulled me into the world of manga and inspired my trip through some 3,000 titles in English and for a while now the original Japanese raws. That said however, and though I still continue with the current releases, I have lost interest in the story and am now merely seeking closure. The primary reasons for this are the overall darker and more serious nature of the current arcs (which seem to be drawing the story to its ending though far too slowly) and the fact that the mangaka has never once given me a reason to like Sasuke who is heavily involved in this final arc/arcs. Sasuke and his relationship with Naruto has to be the Mangaka's greatest mistake in this story. He's been a jerk from the very beginning and I have never seen any worth to his character as it exists in the story or any good reason for Naruto to be truly attacted to him (the ones that are given, frankly, suck). If only the mangaka had developed Sasuke a little more softly and given me more reasons to like him throughout the story, then I would be able to take interest in him and his major role in this latter half of the story.
My feelings about Naruto, now, summed up neatly, would be that I been riding a roller-coaster for a while now that was fun with all its drops, loops, and turns, but now I'm on the final straightaway in a train that has lost its exciting speed and I'm just waiting for the auto-brake system to kick in and take me back to the station to get off, with the small hope that somewhere on this seeming unending straight track there just might be another drop or two before the end.

Do NOT listen to people saying it sucks.
Naruto is one of the few shounens with some real depth I've ever seen. If you're able to read between lines and see behind pictures, you will be able to see how amazing narutoverse and the storyline is.
There are too many characters, ok. But all of them, at least, almost all of them, are unique characters, and adds to the understanding of the naruto-world itself.
People say it's way too long, but there is not a SINGLE arc which is useless to the history.
The plot is absurdly amazing, if you have some brain to enjoy it. Also, in almost 500 chapters, the power scale of the characters are NOT f*cked up. There are lots of examples were in less chapters, the characters powers just turns to some random sh*t (*bleach*, kof kof).
There are also people saying "Kishimoto has a fetish for eyes! I can't stand seeing sharingans anymore, bla bla bla". Godamnit, since the frikin' beginning of naruto the sharingan played a godamn important role. The manga already explained why sharingan and mokuton users are so godamn powerfull, but people just ignore it, and say it sucks.
Every time a X manga is popular, there are tons of people on the absolute anti-X faction, just because X is popular (not that it makes any sense at all).
People love to flame naruto on and on, but I can guarantee, if you read it with no prejudice, you will find that you will not find a better made shounen.
I'll say it again. If you use your brain, and read it with no prejudice, it surely will be one of the best shounens ever.

@Faukner
You're response to some of the people who didn't like the manga and/or anime was rude. I'm a girl and I enjoy reading this.
Now onto the actual review of the manga.
The mangaka had improved tremendously over the years as far as artwork has gone. He makes believabe and very real characters as far as personality goes but as the same time he makes characters whose personalities are very unrealistic. It is a very fine line and IMO he balances it perfectly. I just hope that he doesn't pass away before the end of the series or I'm gonna be fucking pissed.
All in all, it has a somewhat traditional plot, I guess and it isn't for every one but I'm still gonna give it a 9/10.

@Faukner: well im a girl and i think this manga/anime is good up until volume 27+ i felt that the series was just an ongoing cycle and stopped reading nd watching. I agree with infidelityoncrank, it drags on far too long that the ending might disappoint or worse the author might be dead before finishing the series and we'd all be pretty pissed now wont me (hope it doesnt happen thou). I mean i have friends and family under my influence that started to love this manga and is still loving it i mean my mom is inlove with this that she dressed up my 1yr old brother as naruto during halloween. Well my point is not all girls love/hate shounen and not all boys love/hate shoujo so get over it already.

You cannot call a series that is still going strong after 10 years and 50 friggin volumes overrated and even if you can I'm sorry but i cannot accept your pov on this.
If I had to go around rating and slating every shoujo manga I dared read, my mind would blow up with the negativeness.
Long story short don't judge it by the first volume. Its not a perfect series by any means but don't go bashing on Naruto just because its cool to nowadays. I've read all of the manga seen the anime(not the fillers of course) and I like the series omg wow!
P.S I also read skip beat and thought it was quite good.

I started reading this back when it first came out on the internet. I have always loved ninjas (TMNT is still my # 1 for kick butt ninjas) and this had promise. Now, it's just dragging on too long. I'm really just waiting to see who Naruto ends up with, Hinata or Sakura.

People who are saying that Naruto is not worth a read are just stupid. Naruto truly has an awesome beginning, the first few arcs and the first 200 chapters or so were just plain awesome. There is a reason why it is so popular and I reckon its because of the beginning. The mangaka manages to create a very unique universe filled with different kinds of techniques, different kind of characters who are fleshed out quite reasonably. However there are problems as well and the main problem lies with Sasuke and more importantly the relationship between Sasuke and Naruto. I fail to symppathise with Sasuke, the mangaka's attempts at making us sympathise with Sasuke are an epic fail and I totally hate the relationship between Sasuke and Naruto. They take friendship to a whole new level of gayness and no matter what people say it is unrealistic. I am tired of Naruto's friendship antics and am just tired of Sasuke as a character. I believe the manga focuses too much on Sasuke as a character and sometimes his strengths are ridiculous and mangaka is seriously strectching how powerful the sharingan is. Like many people I am just waiting for Naruto to finish so that I can have my peace and also find out who ends up with Naruto lol

I remember watching the premiere of episode one on Cartoon Network. Mt friends read Naruto and liked t, but it never appealed to me. THEN, I saw the episode and loved it! Naruto was energetic and unruly. I couldn't wait for more. I loved watching it and even dragged my dad and stepdad into it! I love the diverse characters and finding out their pasts, watching them grow up was great, but after a while I lost interest. I am starting Shipudden now though. I was obsessed and lost interest. But that doesn't mean I don't still love it!It inspired me and makes me believe, in what, I don't know. Just don't avoid it because of its popularity. You'll miss out!
