Entertaining Read

The first thoughts I had when I started reading this manga were: "This is nothing but a Hana Kimi knockoff". Even the main characters had a resemblance! Nevertheless, I decided to finish it. And I must say I'm glad. While the series does have some resemblance to Hana Kimi and holds every shoujo cliche you can fit in there, it's still pretty entertaining. There are some funny moments and it's overall very enjoyable. And there's also the final side story: "The Change of Feelings Line". That was truly a beautiful heartwarming story. I was glad I decided to finish this manga, otherwise I would not have read that story.

I stopped reading at page 35 of the first volume. The main character killed it for me..

Spoiler (highlight to view)
If you announce that you are a girl in a friggen bathroom, in a shoujo manga, full of guys what do you expect? She set herself up for failure and I think that the way those guys were acting was pretty unrealistic anyways. If Im a guy and I announce that I am a girl in a boys restroom, the guys will tell me take off my clothes to verify? I mean..C'mon...

I also don't find the art to be that satisfying either.

Not bad. Give it a shot if you want a decent read that won't disgust you.

You know, this wasn't that bad. Maybe I just have a thing for the mangaka. No, it was not original. It's been done before.

But I liked the manga, because it did all of these things well.

The girl could be a bit dense, but I'm glad she wasn't a total idiot like most of them are in these types of manga. The interaction between her and the boy is amusing, and sometimes a bit heart-pounding. I'm not going to bash it because it wasn't amazing. I'm going to praise it because it didn't make me want to bash my head into a door.

At least the main character cares for the girl. : / Instead of abuses her verbally, and then OMGWAITHELOVESHERLOLJK. I've seen so many like that. I really hate it.

There's some actual character development in this manga too. It's not astounding, but at least it isn't magical-love-at-first-sight-hurrr.

Stereotypically Shoujo

If you can accept this one for what it is, it is an enjoyable read. Yes, it is overloaded with just about every shoujo cliche that you can think of and maybe even a few that you forgot. Yes, it is also true that Shimaki's art can be very inconsistent. Sometimes everything looks proportioned well, and sometimes everyone looks like they suffer from Giraffe Neck Syndrome. However despite all this, I didn't find it enjoyable. When you get down to it, Boku ni Natta Watashi is the sort of complete fluff where you know that everything is going to work out.

Art is a big deal for me when reading the manga, so i didnt go very far when reading this.
I didn't really fall in love with the art whatsoever.
I only read the first chapter, but I can already sense as being one of those unoriginal type of mangas.
I dropped the manga.

Clichés

I've just finished reading Boku ni Natta Watashi and having read several other Gender Benders like Hana Kimi, Tenshi Ja Nai! or Penguin Revolution I believe this is quite a nice story but there's absolutely nothing new in it. It develops fast and has all the clichés you need to make it a nice short shoujo manga.

The story feels like the mangaka was thinking "What would people like to read?" and threw in absolutely everything the fans would want, like an ever so handsome roommate who's also smart and loves the main female character with all his heart and soul, guy on guy action and a happy ending for everyone.

All the same... I knew from the very beginning that is was going to be like that so instead of being disappointed I found it quite nice and pleasing. Read it for entertainment and you will find it enjoyable. If you read it expecting a completely innovative and shocking story, then you'll be higly disappointed.

This is a really wonderful series full of problems that you can relate to in reality. Haha, I could feel Takanashi's pain about barely getting to see Itou in the end. I didn't really like Kawamaki though (the homosexual guy)... :/ But I really did feel his pain when everyone knew that he was gay, sitting in the middle of the room being picked on like that.

I love it! I rarely ever reread manga but with this one, I reread it all the time. it's shoujo, and all shoujos contain cliches. I found the female lead adorable, she's dumb but to an extent and you know that she truly is a good person. it was cute, and it made me laugh, I love it. I love shimaki ako's works, and this is one of my faves.
