Great music talent. But wasted in an asshole MC and a disjointed way of story telling.

Rating: 3.0  / 10.0
Kiss a shoujo romance series. About a 15 year old girl who has been learning music for about 10 years with her piano teacher who is 22. In the very first chapter the main heroine actually confesses and the MMC and FMC start dating. The story continues dealing with the issues of their age gap as well as past events that they keep bringing up.

This series to me is just a set of wasted potential. It has good bright moments but its just swallowed in this sea of bland and shoujo asshole-ism.

I enjoyed the kiss scenes in this series. I enjoyed the piano playing in this series. But i did not like the romance between the main couple. It felt incredibly manipulative. It not just her age he is constantly pushing and pulling her and his entire vibe is just this "I hate you". He was unlikable and pretty stayed that way. He constantly acted cold and repeatedly hurting the FMC. Though some of his anger and harshness was understandable at times. It still didn't excuse his horrible behaviour.

But my main problem with the series are not the uninteresting characters but rather the disjointed way of story telling. The series basically starts at we are a couple now and then the plot takes a backseat to give this explanation of all these characters including how the main character fell in love as well. If the author was going to drop this piece of information in it would've been so much better if the story was just told in chronological order. They're also many stories about side characters and their past and cannot give 2 shits about them. The stopping the plot to show this backstory of these characters have been done before and most of them suck. They are flashback stories out their that are enjoyable but their hasn't been once were i didn't like when they showed up. Not knowing the future, being uncertain about it, to me has always been a better way to tell the series.

There is a bunch of other shit in the series but i don't really care about it. I literally forgot one of the heroines in the series until i started typing this. I remember none of the characters names the only decent thing was the piano playing which i do think was good. Not incredible but was fun when it happened.

I've seen people be glad that the main couple is formed early one but is the point if the most of the story is just flashbacks and other people? They are literally 100's of stories where the main heroines and main hero get together in the beginning or in the middle. Some of them also suck and this is one of them.

TLDR: Asshole characters, Disjointed storytelling but nice kiss scenes and piano playing. To bad most of this was just asshole characters and disjointed storytelling. 3/10

when i first tried this manga a couple years ago i really hated it. But i think it was due mostly to my dislike of the two main characters getting together within the first chap or so. It was the complete opposite to my preferred style of the protagonists getting together only near the very end, or after many volumes (i like to see the relationship before it all) however i tried reading it again and while i did find certain aspects not to my preferred taste, Kiss is a really good romance.
The main character isnt particularly "special" or talented, but neither is she "hopeless"(cant stand these types male or female). And to the credit of the author, the male lead actually has a history of how he realistically accumulated his "experience" both in piano and in love.

But honestly my favourite character/couple was the sister and that archery guy. I LOVE THE SISTER (maybe because i'm an older sis too?) and I really wish that chap was longer :/

Recently I've been looking for a mature but light romance and thus have only started to appreciate matsumoto tomo sensei

I liked this manga. It had a somewhat mature feeling to it and it shows how one matures by being in a relationship. It's somewhat cliche and predictable but there's just something that makes it captivating.. which is why i didn't give up on it Although it did have some downs for me also.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I didn't really like the ending.. it didn't satisfy me and i expected it to be better. Although this manga was pretty good in its own way, it somewhat bored me because of how predictable everything was.. i literally went over what would happen in my head and i was always right.. too predictable -.-.
The drawing isn't actually bad. It's actually pretty good once you get used to it because its a different type of drawing. Rather than big eyes and specifically shaped bodies, it's rather unique in a way.

I'm a HUGE Matsumoto Tomo fan. Her art is really an acquired taste, but her stories are something else. I love the mood of the entire series. I wouldn't skip this just because you think it's ugly, because this manga still makes me recall heart-tugging moments that I'll keep with me for a lifetime.

Makes me want a Kiss...

I loved this series. I've been reading it, waiting for the ending for years now, and I feel so fulfilled now that I've finished it. Wow. The characters are great and actually very realistic. The story is sweet, and even though there's still a bit of the "forbidden" theme to it, it's definitely not overdone. This isn't something you read when you want a lot of drama. It's truly a touching love story. It's definitely not a comedy although it's can seem a bit funny at times. But life really isn't all laughs and this manga really shows that. It's a great slice of life. The art is a bit old, but it really suits the atmosphere of the story and is, by all means, not bad at all. Definitely a must read...

A loving piece in its own way

The artwork is mediocre, the relationship development extremely slow, it has no real drama, just the everyday slice of life... but... this manga has many wonderful moments, an unique way of telling and character presentation.

It's calm, it's gentle and it's relaxing but still develops passion and desire. And as the title implies it goes on with a kiss.

If you're looking for something more exciting, something lovey dovey, this is the wrong piece then. If you're currently fed up with the generic romance shoujo clichés with artificially raised dramas and irrational characters, and don't mind something that is light at first glance, then give this one a try.

Its honest way and authentic characters captivated me, I loved it while reading it.

The downside is the boss of the piano school. His side remarks annoyed me every single time. And it was all he did. Unfunny comments. In almost every chapter.
Also the main male (Goshima) seems to excel in every task he's given to, that annoyed me a little too as the chapters went on.

Romance shoujo with well built emotions

The pace is really slow but it's like that when you fallen in love. My heart skips a beat or two in some chapters. There is nothing grand and shoujo typicals-cliches in this manga. The characters are fresh and so different and adorable. Even the uncle that many people hate, you can actually understand why he behaves like that. For me, it is not happen just like that. The emotions and relations between a character and the other characters are well built. Lastly, I really like Matsumoto sensei works. Beauty is the Beast is more toward a light shoujo manga but this is more joseish and romantic and I love it!

Not for the fanatics

WARNING: Manga is not for the shoujo fanatics! If you fell in love with Beauty is the Beast, you'll get some enjoyment from this but if you like the shoujo-drama combo, I'd say skip it. The pace is perfect for me but it might seem very slow to others. Also, if you're in this for the 'music' element, go read Nodame.
Honestly, this is a really interesting manga that has captivated me because the characters' love is nice... a bit cliche but it's very sweet in a realistic sense. The drawing isn't fantastic but a change from the norm. Waiting fot the next chapter- Cheers!

Disappointed

I decided to drop this after reading volume 1. There is hardly anything exciting in it as the couple is already together by the end of chapter 1. I don't know, maybe I just like the thrill of the hunt when it comes to shoujo manga. For one, I think the story is bound to end once the main characters get together; it must be difficult for the mangaka to sustain the reader's interest once that happens in the story. Anyway, I digress. For a music-themed romance, there wasn't much musical element in the first volume. I know a manga isn't supposed to be an encyclopedia, but after reading series like Nodame I guess my expectations are a bit too high. And there is very little comic relief in volume 1 (no, the owner doesn't count). Must be because it's a slice of life kind of story, but I found it really boring. I've read the comments below before and I kind of expected something great but I was thoroughly disappointed. Sorry but that's how I found it to be.

Realization

For people like me who likes to wait until translations are completed to begin reading an interesting plot this is certainly one to be aware of. As much as i tried i could not help myself so now am a captive slave for the wait. The story is just too interesting to miss, is not just about music but the characters stories and even the main couples dilenmas are just great. The art at the beginning may seem a bit ackward if you are new to it but once you get past the first chapter you do not care and is pretty good as well. I recommend it to all of those who enjoy Nodame because although different the music part is quite similar.
