The Perfect Balance

Here we have something the Japanese can do great when they want to: MC is a tough, smart women who's also sexy as hell. American media give us the "tough, smart woman" bit often, but, perhaps because they fear being called sexist, they are always careful to leave out the "sexy" part.

As if this imposing but attractive main character weren't enough, the manga also gives us realistic (yes, really!), exciting ghost stories and a terrific supporting cast (The guy who's Misaki's sidekick is a hoot, and at the same time someone whom I think many manga-loving men can identify with.)

Finally, the authors of this unique manga are not afraid to address some of the darkest aspects of death, particularly death by suicide. They seem to have a good understanding of ways suicides come about in Japan, where apparently it is a more or less standard, though extreme, way of dealing with unbearable situations.

For me, the combination of all these factors made the series hard to put down when I read it a couple of years ago...and now I'm re-reading it. I've never re-read any other manga, but this one's even hard to put down the second time around.

Quirky but Interesting

I guess it's called 'Vulgar' because of her mistress job but the storyline is intriguing. No squealy, blushing, little girly here and Misaki's own attitude towards her job downplays any idea of sordidness. It's a job and, like most jobs, a tiring pain in the butt. But, the story has great stuff; humor, horror, fighting, and just plain weird. I'm glad I didn't let the title shy me away from this (which, it did for a while), because I really enjoy it. I just wish it would be completed! Also, the anime is nowhere near as good as the manga. It's like they rushed to put stuff in from the manga, just to make an anime...perhaps hoping the ecchiness would sell it? But, they should've taken their time and made a better showing of this series.

The main character is a dominatrix on SM club, shaman, and adult columnist on porn site as her jobs, pretty interesting character. The story revolves around her interaction with hateful ghost that related to the mystery of suicide society. There is comedy, mystery, fighting scene, drama, and with good drawing, make this manga is a nice read.

Because it has been about four years since I read the first nine volumes and I would really like to know how this story ends. Fun mix of supernatural, humor and gory. Nice art. Imaginative concept.

Rock 'n' roll suicide

A very original manga, with a perfect ballance between drama, horror and comedy.

Some scenes could be rough for some people, but I think that's an important part of the atmosphere of the manga. Main characer is quite interesting and unconventional and while the main story seems a bit rushed the short tales work fabulously.

A definite must read if you are searching for something different.

the fact that rosario vampire got a better rating when it comes to art than this on anime news network makes my brain explode.

whoever is making those judgements needs to open their eyes a little, this guy's really talented when it comes to drawing. not to mention this story is pretty good too

Not just ecchi!

I was bored one day looking for some new manga to read and for some reason my eyes kept looking at this title. The word "Ghost" caught my interest but the word "Vulgar" somehow seemed to taint that nice clean word... ghost. So I downloaded the first volume and after reading it I quickly downloaded, and started to read, the next 8 volumes. I'm currently on volume 2 but I must say that the ecchi, as much as it's probably not needed, does lend a much creepier air to the stories. And so far I've haven't seen any detailed anatomically correct drawings. You know the ones, where a sword hacks a person in two and you see all the details as if it came straight out of a medical journal. Haven't seen those and hope I don't see any either!. The stories themselves can make the hair on the nape of your neck stand up and the goose-flesh to rise on your arms. Very well written and very well drawn. If you feel like you need a wee bit of creepy in your life, then these are the stories to read.

One of the best manga ever, a must-read if you are into ghost/horror stories. The atmosphere in these stories is just perfect. Misaki is great, an outcast who doesn't seem to give a crap about that fact. I like it that the author makes Misaki a (part-time) dominatrix and then doesn't shy away from showing us what a dominatrix actually does.

Interesting, often realistic characters, artwork that depicts the sometimes oppressive scenery, good stories, really creepy stuff...... I would love to see a live-action version of this.

I hope so much somebody translates the last volume too.

This manga's pretty good, and it manages a good balance between horror (GOOD horror that actually freaks you out for a bit) and the ecchiness. Definitely worth a read.
