Hana is a 16-year-old girl who's a bit of a tomboy. She gets dumped by her boyfriend when she moves to Sapporo after her parent's divorce. On her first night there, she comes across a young guy who is seemingly too ill to walk. He ends up collapsing on her and is quickly rushed to the hospital. As it turns out, he's her next door neighbor, Shindou Hiroto.
The next day, when she goes to her new school for the first time, she finds out that he's actually a teacher and that he's the teacher of her class! With his out-going personality and friendly demeanor, he gets along wit... More...

Is totally the type that makes people go crazy lol, charming on the surface, giving mixed signals and false hope, having ambiguous relationships here and there. The girl is great tho.
Even for a manga that was created twenty years ago, such a modernly overused romance theme still manages to bring a rather refreshing tale to the table for new discoverers. With all the simple excessively fluffy love stories in shoujo, it is hard to discover good stories where characters behave their age and males in these love tales seem even slightly believable. Of course, "I Love Her"'s success in being so wonderfully eventful and engaging can be attributed to the fact it was written in a time where quality mangas seem so much more plentiful (due to lack of exposure for the lower-quality tales). The art is quite pleasing for its time, humor relate-able, and the characters have qualities that any reader can empathize with.
A taboo many shoujo readers are familiar with, the student-teacher relationship, has not been clearly stated as a problem in this story. However much this relationship red card is brought up and repeatedly chanted by the inner monologue of the heroine, the teacher appears barely affected. For a male lead, Shin is exceptionally flawed. Although attempting to behave like an adult, he is unable to react maturely in the events of the story. It is unrealistic to design a character who manages to be so wishy-washy with his emotions and actions while being a teacher - despite all the rational traits of other characters in this manga. That said, the characters barely have any development if at all. The heroine becomes obsessed and love-driven, with no signs of maturing or gain of strength. The male lead is an overall fickle man, and there is no proof within the story that he will change his ways about relationships.
Ikuemi-sensei's storytelling is spot-on, even though her character design has some major flaws. The characters become repetitive and irritable, not at all in an intentional way. However, the story is still going to get a 7.0/10.0 from me, as the tale has certainly captured my attention during the read - even accounting for all the times the actions and thoughts of the characters seem unbelievable and ill plotted out.

Someone needs to give Shindou a basic lesson in logic especially when it comes to relationships.
So far, I'm enjoying this manga though it doesn't have humor which I require for a 9 or 10 rating. Humor mixes up the drama and makes it more enjoyable.. If the humor and drama is mixed in well, it takes the read to that 'addictive' level. To me, that's a 10. That doesn't mean this manga isn't enjoyable. It is. If it had good humor I'd definitely give it a 9 or 10.

In Vol 2 Ch 10, Shindou basically tells Hana that because he didn't think things through when he helped Nishikawa (and ended up leading her on when he didn't mean to), Hana has to take 2nd place to Nishikawa if both Nishikawa and Hana are hurting. That is SO messed up and completely erroneous thinking!
Sometimes there's nothing you can do about the errors you've made. Sometimes the only thing you can do is apologize, learn from your error and go on. His reasoning is faulty to the max! Now that he's recognized his error if he's not romantically interested in Nishikawa, the only honorable thing to do is to be honest with her and cut things off. Period. Her home life is not his to fix and should play no part in his decision. He cannot let it go on like it is nor put her above someone he's really interested in. That only serves to give her the wrong impression and to hurt everyone involved. The longer things continue the more attached Nishikawa becomes. I don't believe she's in love - she basically told Hana that she wants to marry the teacher because she wants to leave home. I think she's infatuated with the teacher but only because he's an adult that has shown her affection where her parents have not and because she's attracted to the idea of leaving home for 'love'. However, the longer he continues in his current actions, the more attached she will become and he runs the risk of really hurting her. Sometimes, a swift clean break as soon as possible is the only choice you can logically make & the kindest thing you can do for the one you're not interested in. Dragging it out and giving false hopes is selfish and mean.
Besides, I don't believe he's doing it for Nishikawa's sake. I think he's doing it to punish himself for his error and the result is that Hana gets to be punished along with him and so does Nishikawa because sooner or later he'll decide he's punished himself enough and drop her. The longer that takes the more pain it will cause in the end.
I may seem cruel but I don't feel very sorry for Nishikawa in this circumstance. Because she wants to be rescued so badly, she's willing to manipulate Shindou with tears to get what she wants and if she gets what she wants, she'll mess up his life in the end. Now that's really selfish. I realize her home life may be bad but that's no excuse for selfishness of that magnitude.

This is one of Ikuemi Ryou's most beloved series, and one that turned first time readers into life long fans. It was also made into a drama CD (which is unfortunately, long out of print) back in the mid 90's.
And although little known, there is also a mini-sequel to this series that takes place a few years after the end of the main series. It is included as an extra one-shot titled "P.S. I LOVE HER" at the end of her 1995 series "Kodomo no Niwa" (Children's Garden).
A recommended read...8.5/10

"I LOVE HER" gives a realistic take on the teacher-student relationship. I really liked that the mangaka took her time developing the relationship and didn't just jump to the couple suddenly making out from the first chapter, which is what many teacher-student manga of recent times have degenerated down to.
I also thought it gave a fresh new take to the genre because usually a third wheel (usually a guy) will try to wedge into the relationship of the main couple after they've gotten together but in this series, Hana (the protagonist) initially comes across as the third wheel who's come to break up the relationship.
This is classic 90's shoujo manga in which the love gradually blossoms between the main couple.
