How is it that the mangaka can make this series so grotesque yet funny at the same time?

Is there any other manga series better than Dorohedoro? In my humble opinion: No, and I have read hundred of series over the course of a decade.
It’s funny, it’s violent, and it’s gripping, all starting from such a relatively simple premise. The basic premise is for the main character, Kaiman, to find out who he is. Our boisterous, lizard-headed, and gyoza-loving protagonist has amnesia and wants to get his human head back. Pretty simple, isn’t it? Thankfully, it isn’t.
This is the first time I have not dislike a single character of a series. The main reason is because Hayashida-sensei meticulously develops and gives the characters a lot of screentime, allowing us to empathize and to understand their actions. There is no perfect person in the Doro world, because this world sucks and they just do whatever they have to do in order to survive. That is something I could understand.
The characters’ relationships are intricate and are believable, also due to good development on Hayashida-sensei’s part. It is incredible how she can switch to different perspective so easily and fluidly, which plays with the mystery surrounding a certain character and also to create exciting cliff-hangers.
Where should I even start with the art? It is amazingly detailed in its gritty, black-filled, and “messy” images and lines. Upon re-reading, I can always find something I have missed the first or second time reading. Some people, like myself, can be put off by the art at first, but if you can get past the first few chapters, you will be mesmerize by the plot, the characters, and the intracies within the Doro world.
If I could rate this over 10, I would have given it 25. It's just so amazingly mindblowing.
Just wanna share that I found a really good fansite dedicated to Dorohedoro and some of the characters. The webmaster did a great job at analyzing some fascinating aspects/characters of the manga.

So I started reading and it was confusing and not that great at first, but I kept reading and it only got better and better. The characters a little hard to warm up to in the beginning (the masks don't really help) but they all prove themselves to be awesome. [ebisu and shin are probably my favs, and I can't say there are any characters I don't like] I'm only on volume 6 so I got a long way to go but I hope it stays as good as it is.

This is one of the best manga I've ever read. Seriously. It's AWESOME. You may be turned off by the gore, fantastical plot, and stark drawing style, but don't be. Give it a chance, and Dorohedoro will blow your socks off.
Kaiman and Nikaido's friendship is heartwarming, Noi and Shin's relationship is adorable, and En is just a badass. Also, Fujita is the best character ever. He's hands down my favorite. <3
DEFINITELY at least give it a try through the first five chapters!

I gave this manga a try long ago, and gave up quickly. But then I went back after coming across some recommendations, and am so glad I did. This is one of my all time favorite mangas. After getting past this first few chapters, I couldn't put it down and was hugely addicted.
Pros: This is the cleverist of clever manga out there. It has an original story and great character development. I love the strange artwork with the masks, and the odd world grew on me. You end up liking the good guys as much as the bad guys, and good luck figuring out who which side the characters are on. It draws you in completely, which makes it a solid 10.
Cons: I wish the releases werent so slow in coming out. Meanwhile I guess I will have to re-read it, and will probably pick up on things I didn't the first time. It's not hard to enjoy the story, but some things arent obvious so Wikipedia helped me to fill in some concepts I didn't get at first.

It's just too awesome, I even register just to comment on this one.
It feels like the first time I read manga, the art and story are so exciting. It is special because there 's nothing right and wrong, no evil or hero, but I can guarantee that you 'll not feel boring even a little bit.

If you read this till the end you'll realise that is not just awesome, it has a story for real and strong character development. The best manga i've ever read, I mean, this is the only one who made me read 70 pages in 10 minutes.
By the way, who said "Nothing is new, everything is a copy" didn't read this manga.

This may not be a manga that appeals to everyone. I enjoy the art and the roughness of it, but others may not. I like that the artist obviously draws their work as opposed to using a lot of CG backgrounds or photoshoped stuff. I think the bizarreness of the imagery goes well with the black humor of the story. Some of the humor sometimes had me guffawing in laughter, other times not. Black humor and gore may not be everyone's cup of tea however. There's also some stuff that actually surprises a jaded manga reader like myself.
Some of the problems it has is that sometimes it feels that there isn't a well grounded system that explains how things work. This is why sometimes it feels that some stuff is just made up at the spur of the moment. If you pull off ideas that are just thrown in there no one will notice, but sometimes some things don't seem as well thought out so it becomes noticeable. Also there are times when the humor is a little forced or takes precedence over the story making one feel that the story is dragging a bit.
This is still a pretty fun and original work that contains a fair amount of surprises which made it hard for me to put down. At this time I give it a 9.

... All words that scarcely illustrate the epicness of this manga. The carefully selected minutias and interactions of the characters and the story line beckons readers to read on to the next chapter. The main character exemplifies, and perhaps is the epitome, of cool. I fear that if he were any cooler, the universe would freeze over. The only faux pas of this manga, is that it is not yet well known. It vexatious that my written accolades alone do not serve this manga justice... please for the love of all that is good and enjoyable in the world... READ THIS MANGA!!

This manga got me hooked right away and I couldn't stop reading. The story and characters are so unique and fun. I don't know, this manga has everything I can ask for in a manga. A mysterious, badass, strong main character that also has a sense of humor. The setting is super cool and complex. The others characters are just as interesting. And most importantly, this manga doesn't have a good vs. evil kind of thing. Rather everyone has a reason for doing what they do and the manga doesn't take sides with one particular group. As a result, I was able to enjoy reading the Kaiman/Nikaido parts as well as the En/Shin/Noi parts. A true masterpiece in my mind.
