This was a strange one for me; I picked it up originally because I love all things "Dororo," and there is a lot for Dororo fans to like. However, the first volume is a bit of a mess--nothing's explained--and the setup is bizarre. Hyakkimaru is reborn as a teenage girl, but is still missing pieces and has an incomplete memory. Another Hyakkimaru (male) still exists; he became a demon after succumbing to hatred of the other demons in the distant past. Dororo, too, became a demon in order to save Hyakkimaru's life, and has no memory of her human self. Bon is a modern Dororo: a sneak-thief and a spy, though she needs a lot of Hyakkimaru's help.

The story has Hyakkimaru regaining a few remaining pieces and teaching Dororo how to be human again--a sort of thematic reversal of the original series. The cuts to the past were the most effective to me; seeing Dororo and Hyakkimaru separated by the quest they were once united by cuts deep. The end, too, is effective, with Dororo remembering enough of herself to spare a child from demonic wrath. Hyakkimaru's resolve to sacrifice him/herself to save Dororo is also a standout moment, and something the original series could have used.

Overall, nothing special. The art's a bit weird and the mangaka is obsessive with sound effects. If you enjoy Tezuka's Dororo, though, you might like this, too, especially if you're craving a more settled ending.

Still, if that's *really* what you're after, stick to Kaneko Atsushi's amazing "Search and Destroy," another Dororo remake with ten times the heart of this one and wicked cool art.
