At first i saw everyone's hateful comments but i didn't think anything of it cuz i've experienced a time when a lot of people hated the manga yet i liked it a lot, however, this manga was different. The mangaka has made a lot of good manga's so i thought this one would also be good but it didn't exceed my expectations. This manga, like everyone said, was missing something and i agree. It was a cute manga with a good plot but everything was kind of random and it was just missing something. Not horrible but probably the worst she's made.

Manga tries too hard.

I felt that the idea was very interesting, but the manga failed in the delivery of it. The mangaka tried too hard to somehow tie the present day with the events in the past and all that resulted in was a very jerky, confusing, over-the-top story. Clearly present day Japan is not like the aristocratic society of the Heian period, yet the characters are somehow stuck in the same "tragic" cycle as the characters in Genji Monogatari- but no real explanation as to why that should happen. The current reincarnations have different personalities, they meet in different circumstances, and their environment is completely different; so trying to make their relationship parallel Genji and Murasaki's relationship is completely absurd. The romantic setups are also extremely cheesy and feel contrived, and their everyday behaviour is unnatural. It could have been a nice story, but it ended up failing on so many levels.

This started out with a lot of potential. The plot was good, characters were well fleshed out. The only problem was the drama was ridiculous. I think the manga-ka tried to make the characters cry at least once in every chapter, and then have them argue, split apart and confess their love again in 5 chapter cycles. The historical aspect is good, but after seeing how stupid the couple is, you just wanna shoot them.

The first time I read this manga, I had to drop it because all the over-the-top drama was making me really mad.

However, my second time through (like 3 years later, lol) I found I really enjoyed this series. The drama and everything keeps everything interesting, and I've found that I've always loved Shimaki Ako's twists and turns in her stories. Keeps them interesting and un-cliche.

I also remember disliking the art the first time I read this manga--the mangaka draws characters' noses weirdly from the side. I've found that I don't feel that way now, after reading so many of her newer works, in which the noses had evolved to something more comfortable visually.

Reading this one made me upset and annoyed. The leads are always hurting each other for some reason. It's not so much other people get in their way but they get in the way of themselves. It gets tiring. By volume 4, I dropped it.

Melodramatic

This manga is a nonsensical melodrama. It takes simple problems, like faking a hypnotism, and drags it out to absurd proportions. It also uses unrealistic problems and behaviors to further the romance - if the main character suddenly can't see, he should go to a hospital, not go to school and pretend nothing's wrong.

As for the storytelling, it's too abrupt. Major themes, like the handshaking and love for his new mother, just appear and disappear at whim. The characters don't develop in reaction to events, but just gain emotions whenever the story needs to move forward. The confusion makes it impossible to get into the story.

I actually read it. First I liked it, but now it drew a bit complicated and also a bit hurtful when you feel for the main characters. But 7 volumes is ok, not too long, if it's longer I'll let it die like Ouke no Monshou.

CONFUSING. Don't read it...

I find the mangaka's style of storytelling very jerky and abrupt, often leaving the readers confused. And it also feels like she's just fitting a typical shoujo hero and heroine into the (novel?) concept of reincarnation.

Actually I've been a little bit weary of shoujo manga because of too much cliche. But I tried this manga anyway, just for the heck of it. And I was pleasantly rewarded. The manga is not just fun, it's rather in-depth too. Especially when it's about Hikaru no Kimi' life. Hazuki's story is not properly developed though.

After reading this manga, I feel compelled to read the Tales of Genji. But I don't know whether there's an English version. Anyway, it does gives a little more credit to this manga to be based on a classic novel.

I'd recommend this manga for those who are suckers of romance, or those who are up for a wacky love story.
