Before my reading of Screw-Style, I had read the three short stories of Tsuge's scanlated by Kotonoha. None of them where particularily astounding, but I liked his style and I heard the term Gekiga allocated to him, so I instantly found interesting in him.
I ordered the issue of Comics Journal (250), and when I set me eyes upon the first page, I knew straight away this was gonna be mindblowing. "I was pretty sure there wouldn't be jellyfish here". The haunting backdrop, wooden poles and shadowcast aeroplane instantly set the mood.
Throughout the 20+ pages is a beautifully surreal account of a young man's search for a doctor, and it's incredibly symbolic of the turbulent post-war times in Japan.
Highly recommended to readers of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's works, or general fans of alternative comics.
