Description
High school delinquent Mura must put up with the annoying presence of new stepbrother Subaru when his mother goes away on honeymoon. Dealing with gossip at school is bad enough, but Mura's life is turned upside down by a forbidden locker-room kiss and the publication of an incriminating photo snapped by BL fangirls.

Compelling characters and lovely art make Lucky-kun a pleasant, if sometimes restless voyage into the only-slightly-quiet life of stepbrothers Mura-chan and Subaru-kun. From estranged "brothers" to disquiet presences in each other's lives and then again to gentle, if passionate, lovers, they will reveal the best and the worst about themselves, in a way that is both calm and pervasive.
Yes, the ending is terrible, but not for the reasons named in previous comments (in my opinion of course). I don't usually read tags beforehand because I don't want to be spoiled. That being said, I can't say I wasn't expecting a sad ending. To be honest, the clues were there throughout the story. However, the grand finale that those clues were amounting to did not come to fruition. Spoilers ahead.

The way their romance was construed, it was meant for a great ending. I had perhaps too high expectations, so the actual ending just seemed bland and rushed and not worthy of the characters.
Ultimately I think I would like to reread this some day, but hopefully I'll remember to skip the last volume/chapter.

Subaru mentions the short story book Mura took from his bookshelf? When, with melancholy eyes, he remembers the birds threw themselves into the sea and drowned?

In general this is a nice, well-made old school BL manga. I enjoy it very much, so much that it almost broke my heart when I reached the end of the series. No spoilers, just saying that I can't get it at all. With all the respect to the author, I simply can't get why she had to put that kind of ending into this manga! (It was so sudden I didn't even have time to adapt and to cry over that poor character). Seriously, why?
Just realize that most of BL manga at that time (early 90s) have BE or tragic end. Maybe it was trendy.

I read this ages ago, but it's one of those rare memorable ones that just sticks with you no matter how long time passes by.

Takaguchi Satosumi does indeed create beautiful stories...and I believe Lucky-kun is one of them as well. I think one of the reasons why people were so confused with the time skip was because the readers didn't realize or expect his death to come so suddenly (even though there was a lot of subtle foreshadowing on his death and how he was going to die). But when you actually think about it, up until that moment it was all just glimpse of the past of their love life and dreams. It really is tragic in many ways, and it was hard to comprehend, not only due to Subaru's sudden death but because you knew they had so much more, they had a future ahead of them.
It's understandable to feel a bit upset or angry at Mura for marrying and trying to move on. But at the same time it's reasonable. In that last chapter, you know his life was changed completely by Subaru, he has nightmares, and suffers constantly. And it's really sad because you know he will never be the same again, or love anyone as he did with Subaru. I think that's why it's so powerful, because it is realistic in many ways. Death cannot be predicted, the ones left behind are never left unaffected. People cope differently and Mura for an instance could not cope or "forget" Subaru, hence seeks the warmth and comfort in someone else.
I wonder why this manga (ignoring the magazine title) is (actually) called Lucky-kun... because neither one of these boys are "lucky" in the end. I thought about it and maybe it was called lucky-kun because they were able to experience and know love. I guess it was better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
or maybe because in the manga Lucky-kun (magazine) was the catalyst to start their relationship...

Unlike the other reviews, i didnt think that badly of the ending. However, im one who likes tragedy so that may be why i liked it. The start of the last chapter got me confused but later i understood what was happening. In other parts i foind it slightly confusing too but bearable. I love the cover images theyre just perfect! Its probably something that i will forget rather fast but i enjoyed it.
The ending completely ruined this for me.
I mean seriously, what the heck. It was completely random and totally spoiled the whole thing, I wish I hadn't read this series in the first place.

The last chapter skips ahead to Mura marrying some random chick for no reason because Subaru died in a freak traffic accident 7 years previously.

The art is really pretty it has a certain charm to it and doesn't detract from how good the character look 
I read this up to half way through vol 3 and thought this was brilliant the story isn't rushed and the love developes naturally. In general its deffinatly different from anything else i've ever read out there.
But when i saw what happened in vol4 i thought wow what a tragic ending i couldn't bring myself to read it propperly because i thought it was too sad
Even so this is a really good manga the ending is so different so if your looking for a real life type thing this is for you - do not read this if your looking for a happy ending or a light read
Maybe one day i will be able to return to it and finish it propperly

Even so this is a really good manga the ending is so different so if your looking for a real life type thing this is for you - do not read this if your looking for a happy ending or a light read

I was thinking "oh.. lame it's all macho and superficial.." BUT hell no!!! half reading through it, it hit me that I understand othing! It is so deep and mature. I liked bothh characters! and this is rare for me, coz there's always the cool&sharp top and the whiny bottom, but not on this manga!
Which gave me a pleasent surprise.
I, in oppose to other comments, liked the tragic ending. I thought it was good, realstic. Not everything in life is butterfliers & flowers. Sh*t happens, and this manga is ironically called lucky-kun... hmm..
I would have rated it 10000000 if I could. I've read many many manga (yaoi or not) but never have I come across a story such as this. Truely unique. I'm a fan <3

overal the series was good, the artwork isnt the best but he story was good(except the original ending). The author's original ending was the tragic one from the 2 bunko volumes.(this original ending is also known as volume 4). the author wrote another ending(the happy one) in response to readers feed back to the original tragic ending. just read volume 1-3 for a happy ending that makes sense. i dont suggest reading volume 4 cuz imo it feels really out of place and forced like the author just wants to end the series quickly.
If it wasn't for the tragedy. First 3 volumes were great, characters and art were wonderful. It was deep, even had an ending without the tragedy part. That was just so sad. (I wonder if it is a spoiler when there's a tragedy genre, I guess not).

... but why do I always miss that it's a tragedy. Really, It's a wonderful story, not to fast in the development and not to slow. To me, this is perfection, except for the ending. TRAGEDY! Must learn to really read the genres before reading the manga.
But seriously, unless you hate BL, there isn't much to dislike about this manga.
