Description
[From BLU]:

Just before the start of the French Revolution, a commoner named Gerard pays a visit to a high-class brothel, where he sleeps with, and then buys the freedom of Jacques, a young noble sold into prostitution. Jacques looks down on commoners and Gerard has his reasons for hating the nobility, but they’re thrown together once again when Jacques ends up being hired as Gerard’s new houseboy. Jacques’ determination to make his own way in the world, and Gerard’s surprising, quirky shows of kindness slowly bring the two together into a romance for the ages!

Well at first I didn't really want to reade it because of the cover but then I started it because I was bored. And after the first chapter I was totally absorbed in it!! The story has a great developpment and I love the characters.

You always hear people waxing poetic about the relative "cinematism" of manga versus Western comics. I never really noticed such a concept until I read Gerard and Jacques. I don't think I've seen many movies this cinematic.

Yoshinaga is a master at creating complex, intensely human characters with deep-set motivations and regrets. That I knew from what little I had bothered to read of Antique Bakery. I never realized, though, how great she could be at molding a well-researched, lusciously period setting, building suspense to a quiveringly desperate point, or manipulating my puny emotions. She's also quite talented at making sex seem uniquely interesting - because let's face it, it really isn't, especially not on paper.

I'm going to have to call this one of the best yaoi series ever written.

It may start out as a usual yaoi story but as soon as it starts to roll in, you really learn that isn't the case. There is definitely plot and development in this story. It was like reading a novel actually but just with pictures. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend to any yaoi fan.

I'm actually a little disappointed. Before I read the manga, I heard all this great stuff about it and had pretty high expectations. Then after I finished reading it, I thought, "Huh, this was okay."

Nothing awful, nothing perfect. I guess Under Grand Hotel and stuff like that is more suited for me...

In response to the comment below: yes, there's sex, but you have to consider the context. For once, there are solid reasons for it, it's not there for the sake of some cheap excitement. It's set in XVIII century France, libertine mentality of the upper classes... it happened, period. Story-wise, the sex is a mean to an end, and Yoshinaga-sensei did a wonderful job with this story. Actually, I found it a quite realistic portrait of the era, not shying away from its less alluring aspects (aka young boys prostitution ) . Historical accuracy: check. Multi-faceted characters + characters developmennt : double check. Plot: YES! And a engaging one as well. Art: not to everyone's tast probably, but I like it, plus it's a very effective drawings style and sequence direction (the way those little facial expression changes can express a whole world of emotions without actually a word being spoken... and when there's dialogue it's poignant dialogue , be it serious or funny, sarcastic, witty).
Don't be put off by the possibly shocking first chapter, you'll be rewarded by one of the most well-crafted stories around in this medium ^__^ . Yes, it's this good IMO. And I'm not a yaoi fan either bigrazz

i cant believe people like this manga so much, and what is realistic about it? the whole manga is basically about the main characters sex lives. there is literraly sex in every chapter with many different people... and yet why do they fall in love, it makes no sense to me...

This was a wonderful manga. Like all the other commenters have said, this is a yaoi that is well-written and realistic. I am once again overwhelmed by Yoshinaga's talent in writing romance. For a long time I ignored yaoi, but her works have entirely won me over. I also really like the fact that the manga's illustrations never feel cluttered. Yoshinaga's deft use of simple lines always convey a sense of simplicity and calmness. I would recommend this manga to anyone who enjoys romance and history.
