Lovely, magical, beautiful, enchanting...

Let me say this first: I used to read manga (shounen, shoujo, and everything else) but after I got busier in high school, it was harder and harder to follow along with all the new manga and new updates on chapters from old mangas, and most of all: Everything was so BORING and generic and cliche!

So after years of suffering from good-manga-withdrawal and years of reading crappy oneshots and short, less-than-20-chapter mangas, I suddenly had the genius idea of revisiting some old recommended manga that I had never thought to read or dismissed because I was judging a manga by its cover. After sifting through and testing a bunch of manga, Kami-sama Hajimemashita was the first one I read and actually felt interested in. I LOVED it! It was refreshing, not too shoujo/cliche/romantic, but with those elements accompanied with an original, interesting plot and amusing characters. It was a miracle for me to find this manga: it renewed my faith in shoujo mangas and I finally am back to reading manga! biggrin

The storyline is absolutely perfect. The latest time-travel arc...amazing. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Everything fit together, and it even connected with thus far unexplained mysteries from way early on, suggesting that Suzuki Julietta totally planned their romance from the beginning. It would be near-impossible otherwise. I can't get over how everything is so inexplicably intertwined and done so beautifully and flawlessly. Ugh, I'm jealous of their

romance/fate/destiny.

I think my only complaint was that when
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Tomoe and Nanami finally did get together after he finally confessed to her, it was kind of anti-climactic! I was really hoping for a little more heartfelt confession that wasn't really cliche.
I'm kind of a romantic, so I really like it when I read something that makes my heart go *dokidoki* LOL. It feels like all the romance that the mangaka was building up to finally amounted to something great and real and amazing. It kind of felt like the characters were a little static, and didn't change all that much, and their relationship didn't change that much afterward... I felt like that whole arc could have been tied together a little better/more solidly.
The other characters are interesting as well in their own ways. My main fault with the main character, Nanami, is that she is too stupid sometimes! She doesn't really try that much in school and she trusts people way too easily, and she never listens to Tomoe's advice when she needs to. Some of the characters are hard to keep track of, good thing they all look different from each other and they keep reappearing throughout the series, so later on it becomes a lot easier. It takes a while for the side characters to reappear, so sometimes if there's a cliffhanger or a mystery behind a character, it takes forever for you to find out what it is, and so you're dying to know! But I guess that's an element of a good story. Sometimes you don't know what a character wants or how s/he'll fit in, but keep sticking with it. The story is woven intricately and there's so much foreshadowing and everything: remember that everything and everyone connects in the end!

Anyone who likes shoujo manga, romance manga, action manga, historical manga, and manga with beautiful art and well-developed characters should absolutely read this. (So, basically everyone! If you're reading this review, stop and read this series! No more excuses!) It's a stellar series. 10/10, will recommend to all. After this, I'm definitely going to read Suzuki Julietta-sama's other works!
This manga is also very similar to InuYasha, one of my favorite mangas of all time, but a lot more lighthearted, less action-y, less gore-y and monster-y, more focused on romance, comedy, story, and character development.

I'm really scared though, now that they're together, that the manga will suddenly end! I mean, it's already past 100 chapters! Isn't that always like that with shoujo mangas? I haven't read long shoujo in a long, long, long time, so I always feel betrayed when a series I stuck with for so long and spent so much time/tears and got emotionally involved in, gets a (oftentimes horrible) wrap-up, cliche fairytale-style ending. I'm so scared that this manga's going to end soon. Maybe I'm just being paranoid because I have an unhealthy attachment to this manga, being that it's the first romance manga I read and simply adored after such a disappointing break from manga. Thank god at least there's still a story after they get together. I'm not ready for this amazing story/romance to end.

If anyone knows when it's going to end (or if it is going to end anytime soon, or not), please tell me. I'm going crazy thinking that the story will suddenly be cut short, like so many other long mangas.

Awesome Shoujo Series!

Shockingly, this series actually gets better with time. The latest time-travel arc was AMAZING, and frankly handled gracefully. The entire cast is composed of well-developed, interesting characters who each have (multiple!) story arcs of their own that intersect with the main character's development as well, and all in all I am very impressed with Suzuki Julietta. I find Nanami extremely likeable and appreciate how she has developed as a character throughout the series. If you like shoujo with a strong female lead, look no further! She may seem like a damsel at first but Nanami is definitely a heroine that can hold her own. I look forward to more of her adventures in the future!

Not to spoil anything, but I had to comment, the entire time-travel arc was absolutely lovely.

Nothing like the pain and angst of the Kikyo-Inuyashi-Kagome affair with the reincarnation business, the fact that Tomoe was in love with Nanami from the past is just too lovely for words.

I'm not the type to read romances and comedy together (I prefer tragedies and serious reads) but this isn't bad at all. The story is not cliched, it isn't bland, and there is a well paced plot (rare for Shoujo manga, i think). It is rewarding to read for the sake of the love that is growing and the amusing interactions that can occur. The characters are not well explored but they are suitable for the story and they are complex enough (having motivations and personalities) for the reader to care for them.
Ultimately, for a Love & Comedy, this is a 9.5/10. Props to the mangaka. I wish there were more stories with amusing romances and decent plot.

This is the only shoujo manga I continue to read - probably because I LOVE the female heroine, which doesn't happen often for me. Though it seemed a bit average in the beginning although still very funny, this manga becomes a story more beautiful than I could have ever imagined it to be.

I love the art and the story, especially when Tomoe is in his long hair and in chibi mode >_< . I recommend this for people who love romance comedy and looking for manga with such a gentle man <3 .

I've been following Suzuki Julietta's works for quite some time now and from Akuma to Dolce and Karakuri Odette to the current Kamisama Hajimemashita, her writing and art have improved tremendously.

Like others, I was also hesitant to give this a shot because of the art. Yes, so very shallow of me BUT, Tomoe did in fact, look girlish and Nanami looked unappealing. At least, that is what it looked like for its image on MU (some years ago). To be honest, the art wasn't as amazing as it is now and now, Nanami is gorgeous and Tomoe is hot.

When I finally gave this one a go, I was hooked and it began to have a special place in my heart. Years later and it still hasn't lost its touch. In fact, I think I've fallen more in love with it. How amazing it is for Suzuki-sensei to build up such a perhaps "normal-at-first-sight-plot-of-a-shoujo-manga" to become so much more than it originally was. It starts off normal--like a typical shoujo but really it is so much more. Although it begins like Karakuri Odette, with different scenarios in every chapter, it has transformed into one of the most epic love stories that make your heart throb and your feelings come crashing down like waves.

I love Nanami and Tomoe and their love story.

I hate to say this, but in the beginning, Tomoe looked like a girl and I was really confused because of that, but I kept on reading because the idea of the story was interesting (I mean, a man getting chased up a tree by a dog and giving his shrine to the girl that rescues him? Plain weird.). I actually had a bunch of manga I was reading at that time and I was switching between them every chapter, but after I got to the middle of the manga, I completely abandoned the other stuff and started on it. Then I reread the manga a lot and sighed and reread it again...
This manga catches your attention with the weird introduction of the heroine and the new role she finds herself in. The artwork might not be great in beginning, but it really improves a lot. The characters develop well too. The whole concept of this manga is built up through the slow story line and it improves itself a lot. Its kinda typical at first though, and hard to pick up.

This manga seems fairly average and ordinary at first glance. I won't lie, when i first heard of it, I thought it would be another average plain shoujo and avoided it. However after watching the anime, (which did have its setbacks), i moved onto the manga seeing as it was still ongoing and I wanted to see some more Tomoe. Let me tell you, the manga is SO much better. Like I said, It's starts off as nothing extraordinary. It has a cute story, VERY likable, interesting and well developed characters. Some people mentioned that the manga was too draggy/long at parts and fillerish. While this is true, I still found the fillerish arcs enjoyable simply because of the characters who made it fun to read. I didn't really care if the main story wasn't going anywhere since the arcs were still enjoyable. Of course, the manga is currently at its peak right now imo, so yes, the story DOES move, and it's a good plot too. Its not just one of those school-life-comedy-no plot shoujos that it MAY seem like at initial glance.

I also want to mention how much I adore the characters. Tomoe- do I really need to say anything? He's so flipping sexy and I love his history with how he became a familiar. Mizuki's is refreshing and compliments Tomoe- he also has a sweet history as well. Akura-Ou is damn sexy too and Im always looking forward to learning more about him. Another one of my personal favorites is the Dragon King..he's hillarious! Finally, there's Nanami. She might seem very ordinary and plain for a heroine, but that's one of her biggest charms. I really like Nanami because she's so ordinary and is aware of it. Even though she thinks that Tomoe, an amazing deity liking her is silly, she doesn't let that stop her from loving him, and is remains honest with her feelings. This part of Nanami I really like. She's relatable and so down to earth! Its really refreshing to have her as heroine.

That being said, definitely check this one out if you love fantasy-shoujo-romances (Think Inuyasha), but make sure to be patient as it IS on the slower side.. not as slow as inuyasha though of course lol.
