I didn´t like it at first

At first I really wanted to drop this. (So glad I did not). The story is fantastic, but the best thing about Basara are characters. Loved them. Altrough I didn´t like the end so much

Spoiler (highlight to view)
honestly, that guy killed your family, how could you be happy with him??? I feel so sorry for Asagi. And the afterstory with Hayato tells us, that not that much changed with the system, so it was a little pointless, but well...

This IS a masterpiece. I loved it a lot and will probably re-read it just to see the characters again.

Epic shoujo gem

Basara is without doubt one of the best shoujo of all time. It's a truly epic shoujo and an epic romance.
The artwork may be outdated and even ugly for many people(nevertheless I find the style beautiful) but who cares about the art when you have THIS story? Human, *real* characters, bathed in gray; you won't find evil overlords or "good guys" in this manga. The plot is intriguing and full of twists and even if I was able to predict many stuff, everything is so amazingly executed that this "predictability" doesn't detract any points from the awesomeness. The messages are naturally conveyed, unforced; this is not a stupid moralistic story.
Don't let the artwork turn you off people and read this manga. It's worth every minute of your time.

I just couldn't get through it...I have no idea why but it just did not capture my attention. Like I know it is a very good story but not one that I can read? Don't let my comment deter you though, give this one a shot and it may be a story for you.

Epic

I agree with everybody, this story is epic no doubt about it. I specifically liked the fact that the last two volumes are short stories about the lives of all the characters after the revolution, including Sarasa and Shuri.. I was hesitant for a long time about reading this manga because it was started in 1991 and to me art is important for a manga. But after I picked it up and started reading it kept getting better and better until it finally ended in one of the greatest endings a manga could have. If you haven't picked this up yet, you really should start reading it.

epicness

this story can only be described as EPIC. It is long and super satisfying, and leaves you (possibly) wanting for more. There is action, advventure, a killer story line and LOVE. Shuri and Sarasa is one of my favourite couples of all time. Their romance is soooo addictive: painful, intense and the sloppy, cliche shojo love cannot compare to this one.

And Shuri is too good looking for mine eyes.

The only thing i regret is reading it when i first started out with manga. It has set my expectations too high for all the other mangas and i have not yet found one better than this. sad fingers crossed to finding one ><

Review of Basara

This is perhaps the best shoujou, maybe even manga I've ever read. I haven't found a better shoujo that can compete with Basara. It had everything, from adventure, action, romance, betrayal and everything. Even though the art grew on me, despite being annoyed by it at first. It's a wonderful story and told in such a way that captures a reader and doesn't let go.
I love Basara so much, it's wonderful and not your typical shoujo. The characters are beautifully made, it made me cry, something I didn't expect and just the world of Basara itself enchanted me. I would give 15/10 but I can't, so i'll just stick to 10/10.

I don't really like shoujo manga, but every now and then I come across a series that manages to catch my attention and actually keep it from beginning to end. Basara was one of those series'. Although it's not the most awesome thing that I've ever read, it is still very good. Perhaps I shouldn't go into graphic detail here, because most reviewers have already said what needs to be said it.

I suggest just giving it a try. You might like it, too.

I normaly don't read manga with older art but I think after reading Basara I should consider reading other works with old art, because its just soooo GREAT!! The story is very unique and the characters are all developing in this storry. In the end I was really moved by some characters and even cryed, what I usually don't do by reading a Manga. I raed a lot other gender bender mangas but this is verry difrent, It's better^^!! If you think it's not worth giving a try then you are absolutly 100% WRONG!!! It's absolutly awesom and I was really absorbed in it while reading it and felt the emotions of each character^^!!

Had to read it someday, and I am glad I did. Everything in this manga can become something significant in later chapters. Sometimes I re-read some parts to understand better and move on to next chapters, but tha is a beauty of this manga. Some manga just sound big(revolution, world wars and etc) but it always comes down to some local conflict without any clear ending. This manga is different. The end became as grand as it sounded in the beginning. Many interesting things happened. And this manga became a little represantation of much bigger story. Seriously, if some other author wrote it it would've taken 2-3 times more volumes. But this way it's a 100% juice, free of mind tiring stalls and fillers.

FANTASTIC

I can't even start to BEGIN how epic this series were. Entertaining arcs and entertaining story line. ALL the characters captivate the reader and the "forbidden love" between the two main characters were lovely yet heartbreaking at the same time. Although the main characters were amazing, one simply cannot forget the side characters as well. Chacha and Ageha were simply fantastic. Although to many readers the 27 volumes may be daunting and scary, do not fear. It's actually 25 volumes with 2 volumes of extra side stories which are very amusing to read. (in fact, I recommend you do) Of all the manga and manhwa I have ever read during my whole lifetime, this deserves a solid 10.
