Easily In My Top 5 ;P

While looking through the comments I noticed several people comment on the apparent instantaneous growth of Shioon and how it's too instant and unrealistic... I really think those people should reread the beginning of the manga. Shioon does not "instantly" get better, in fact, even when he finally decides to stand up for himself he still gets his ass-kicked several times before he starts improving. Not to mention the manga takes place within a month, the point is that he's a quick learner. Also any comments about too heavy an amount of fan-service, boobs, etc., are just flat out wrong. This manga handles any sexual content in it the way a seinen should, with maturity. Not once while reading this did I find the sex appeal of Shiho (the only character that is featured heavily and has sex appeal) to be "too much" or "unnecessary," whoever thinks so should read more manga cause there are an infinite number of examples of this actually being the case. Moving along, this manga is terrific, I was originally hesitant for whatever reason, I don't remember why, but when I did finally read it I was thoroughly impressed. With only 72 chapters, it is short, but what it manages to accomplish within that time is truly great, not to mention it has an equally great sequel. In addition to the great art, the battle scenes are exciting and fast-paced. You can as easily connect with Shioon's triumph and defeat as you can Goomooryong's anger and loss. Overall, counting this and The Breaker: New Waves as the same manga, this is easily in my Top 5 biggrin

Great Manga, read until Shioon's first fight before you decide if you like it bigrazz

After neglecting to read this some few years back, I started re-reading it from the start till finish because of the glowing reviews in here. But man, what's with the positive superlatives? Tricked me into picking this up again!

The story is dull and predictable. I was waiting for a damn twist! But alas, there is none. Romance is very cheesy (the creators know it so it's almost alright to forgive them but no. It is not a valid excuse to just mix in some lovey-dovey scenes in there haphazardly especially when they know that it is half-baked and sappy. It is so laughable that it makes me want to tear my heart out

like the 9 Dragon's master did).
Dialogues are flat. They want me to labor on reading these clichéd script when I watched Karate Kid and Kung Fu Panda already? I know I know, childish analogy but come on, who are we kidding here? Can't this manhwa just get on with the fighting already? The characters are so put out, contrived, unrelatable and showing unnecessary boobs and camel toe exposure. Am I heartless to not care for any of the characters in here? No. I've cried with the characters in varied forms of literature but this one is dastardly different. This manhwa seriously lacks character build-up that I did not care even if they'd be beaten to a pulp while spouting their holier-than-thou ideologies or end up dead in a ditch somewhere.

When that Shiho died? Good riddance. Don't think the plot moved with or without her. Her boobs and panties missing in action is a welcome sight.
And don't tell me that Shion kid was not one dimensional. From wimpy to being ass-kicker in a month? Please. I've had enough of those green characters that it makes me want to puke whenever they don't present anything new and convincing to the plethora of THOSE kind of "transformed" characters. Where are the witty characters gone?

In sum both the plot and the characters are not to die for however the kid disciple would want you to believe otherwise.

However, the martial arts are cool to look at. Capturing each attack frame by frame was refreshing since I am kind of used to not understanding what has happened on most of the fight scenes in Blade of the Immortal.

The ending: Do you take us for a fool??! We know who is gonna win, alright? Just got to hang on for the martial art moves for the next one. God, on second thought, I don't want this sequel anymore unless there would be NO useless yapping about and dammit, not showing their naughty bits here and there would really help this thing to become a bit less shallow.

PS: How did this excuse of a plot become Seinen? Because of the boobs and panty shots? The world must be crumbling. Props to the scanlation team, though.

Story starts off slow but its starts picking up speed until the twists and action come thick and fast. The twists at the end were fantastic and really sets up well for New Waves. This was my 3rd manga after Bitter Virgin and Bleach and I've read a lot of stuff after that but I have to say it still sits in my top 5.

Whoever suggested "character growth"

was misleading people, because whatever "growth" there is in this series, it's so instantaneous and without any grounds at all. Main char starts off as a wuss, and then all of a sudden is revealed to be this really talented, really simple-minded guy (simple-minded because it takes one lesson for him to get over his fear and somehow show he's got such a huge amount of "spirit").

Speechless, go read it yourself. You will not be disappointed and I have to say myself, that this is one of the best mangas. Great conclusion, there's even a sequel! The sequel doesn't suck either, its even better actually.

I don't think I've ever read anything this great! I kept putting this one off for a while. Turns out I shouldn't have. The pace is just perfect! I don't see where it's slow, since it gives you the opportunity to enjoy every moment to the fullest. It's the first time I've actually cut down on my sleep, devouring a book!
Now go read it yourselves, people!

As others have said in the comments below, this manhwa started out pretty slow. The humor is mindless and in my opinion, tasteless, too. It's not that funny at all... but again, that's my opinion. The action is AWESOME. It's so good! Very creative. I can't believe how well drawn this is. The art is typical of shonen, I think. Intensifying the male quality (ABS) and the female quality (...boobs..etc.) And the abs are to die for.

I'm a shojo fan, btw, (though I do read shonen pretty often) so haha this kind of plot doesn't always click with me. Regardless of its genre, it's silly not to appreciate good art and plot when u see one. I love fight scenes in general. Good ones like this get my blood pumping. Even when he's losing, he still gets up... it's soo....squeelllll!!!! he is so so so cooooollll~~~ (i'm grinning like an idiot as i watch this, lol I'm such a fangal).
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Chapter 3 is when they started training... when the main guy took the strength pill thingy. And started having abnormal amount of Ki in this body.
Chapter 5 is about when he started to fight by himself.

Damn if people have stopped reading The Breaker after the first few volumes it's really too bad, because (can I say this?)
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
shit hits the fan near the end
and I'm pretty sure I shed a tear. Really, what makes manhwa like this amazing is the crazy build-up that leads to the final moment and all you can do is breathlessly read each page in amazement. Noblesse did that to me, and now The Breaker has done it once more. I can't wait to read New Waves when it's complete smile

I've actually started reading this manga 2 or 3 times already but has never been able to pass the beginning because it was just brainless humor. However, about 2 weeks ago I'm glad I was able to make up my mind and finally got passed the beginning.

In the beginning, the author wants to make you know that none of these main characters get along but they put with each other because of their titles. Goumooryong is Shioon's teacher (so he puts up with Shioon this way); Shiho is a coworker to Goumoonryong by name and they put with each other that way. However, as this story develops, the author wants you to know that they still act like they do in the beginning but all they got is each other; rescuing and reassuring each other that there are dire consequences for any rules that aren't followed.

I love the bitter tragedy at the end. Towards the ending, I'm thinking "this is how it's gonna end" but it ended COMPLETELY different from what I had in mind. I love the twist and overall, the art style is amazing. The fighting is easy to understand; Goumoonryong's able to relate to Shioon as a student in various ways, which also helped him made the choices he made at the end. Lovely and extremely powerful story.
