Description
From Anime News Network:

500 years before the story of Saiyuki, a heretic child with golden eyes is brought into Heaven. He is given into the reluctant care of a minor deity named Konzen, the nephew of the Merciful Goddess Kanzeon Bosatsu. Konzen eventually gives the child the name "Goku". Goku becomes friends with two other minor gods, Marshal Tenpou and General Kenren of the Western Army of Heaven. He also meets a strange little boy who seems to be his own age, the War Prince Nataku. Although Goku is happy in his new home, Heaven is not kind to heretics. There are those who would use Nataku and Goku as tools in an attempt to seize the throne of Heaven, and Konzen, Tenpou, and Kenren may not be able to save them.

Saiyuki Gaiden

As TheAlmighty has already mentioned, you should read at least one of the sequels first before you read this. The feeling of nostagia really adds to everything. But I also agree with calstine that the sequels are a bit disappointing and fairly repetitive.

However, if you really want a kick out of this, read as much of the sequels you can, then slowly enjoy the gaiden. Doing this makes you feel much more emotion towards the story and appreciate the gaiden just that much more. The Saiyuki Gaiden ending made me cry, TT^TT but gives you that half-sad-half-happy feeling because you know it's not over for them yet (obviously because there are sequels), but they will not be the same.

Summary:
This is definitely recommended.
Read the sequel(s) before reading this (Saiyuki Gaiden).
And personally I think Goku is cuter with long hair ^^

Gaiden, I promise you, will make you ball your eyes out. As it is a prequel, I would always suggest reading the sequel first. The feeling of nostalgia, call me masochistic, but it makes the overall feeling even better. It's not BL, but their bond is something that I think everyone will love.

I just finished, and it was absolutely unbelievable. I has everything; characters, politics, violence, beautiful art, beautiful relationships, tragedy, hope...oh my goodness, I can't even get over the ending. Whomever is reading this review: you will not be sorry you read this. Truly one of, if not Minekura's best works. If I could rate it higher than a ten, I would.

This is such a wonderful story- short but sweet, with a lot of tragedy mixed in with some really heartfelt moments that made me feel quite saddened and sympathetic towards the fate of the foursome as well as Nataku. Not many things can bring a lump to my throat, and the prequel to the Saiyuki saga (of which I am not a fan) was the last manga I expected to be able to do that- so I was quite taken aback when it did.

Still, I do feel that the political side of the story was slightly underdeveloped. The talks of power-play and corruption among heaven's administration were enjoyable- though the details were rather sketchy. I would have liked to see more on the subject; it definitely would have made this manga more intriguing.

However, much to my disappointment, I found that the sequels of Saiyuki Gaiden failed to evoke any emotion whatsoever within me. Konzen, Tenpou and Kenren, as well as Goku's childhood self were, to me, much more likable than Sanzo, Hakkai, Sha Gojyo and 18-year-old Goku ever will be.
I tried both Gensoumaden and Reload, finding them to be incredibly boring. It's a shame none of the sequels even remotely live up to the standards of the prequel...After all, there's no point in reading this if the follow-up is so plot-less and repetitive. sad

Saiyuki Gaiden is wonderful. The story is great, the art is beautiful, and the fights are epic.
This manga makes me very emotional. It's heartbreaking...the interactions between Nataku and Goku;;;what is inevitably going to happen...it's all very heart-wrenching.

I think this is the best of the three Saiyuki manga. The fighting is really amazing and you get to see what made our beloved foursome into...well our beloved foursome. A must read for Saiyuki fans and for anyone who loves action and a great plot.
