From Viz:
Pokémon comics based on the original Game Boy games... not the TV series!
POKÉMON ADVENTURES includes all the Gym Leaders, places, and opponents from the game. There's plenty of action as trainers named Red and Blue explore forests, jungles, cities, and caves in search of Pokémon and excitement. But can they foil the schemes of Team Rocket, a mysterious group of villains who want to use Pokémon for evil?

In comparison to the anime, the manga has far more depth and adventure. To be honest, the anime toned down a lot of the action for the younger viewers as is basically the same plot over and over again. Ash meets companions. Gets badges. Never wins the league. Restarts all over again - just different pokemon.
But THIS - is simply amazing. When I started reading it, I was really hooked. There's humor, action, adventure and slight hints of romance. I especially liked the arc between Ruby and Sapphire - where it demonstrates the battle between the legendaries and their fight. It even had the depth of their childhood relationship (:
At times, it can drag on and seem quite lengthy, but I recommend it to all those who like action packed manga.
This manga is awesome. I never thought that someone would turn Pokemon games into a Pokemon manga. I wish I were in Japan so I could buy Pokemon Special.
I thought this manga was going to be really bad. I mean the pokemon games were good but the show was really childish and repetitive. But I was pleasantly surprise. It actually is a really good read. The characters are really well developed. The pokemon are badass and cute. The plot is very well written with good foreshadowing and twists. Just a really solid manga and funny too. I am curious why they didn't just animate this manga. It is way better than the actual pokemon anime.
I agree with all the comments here! and yea..this is the BEST Poke'mon adaptation yet. The characters are well-developed, the plot is evolving every arcs...! (My fav. arc is the Ruby/Sapphire arc..!! The BEST EVER!) this manga makes me PROUD to be a Poke'mon fan. *Forget about the crappy anime, READ THIS MANGA!
This manga is by far the best adaptation of the original Pokemon games. I love the characters, the intense battles and the character design. The anime is nothing compared to this! I would love to buy the volumes by Chuang Yi if I could find them. Definitely worth your time.
I love this!!! Even after 10 years. I still love this! I can no longer gear back myself into T.V. series anymore, but this one, Pokemon Special, is something else! Despite art itself is little infantile, the story itself is somewhat mature, and that is where it becomes the great adventure manga! The author blends the most distinguished fantasy plot with some realism very well! I think this is one of the best adventure manga of this era, perhaps, all-time! I especially give good rating for The Fourth Chapter for his 'hobby'! (that was funny as hell for main protagonist to have)
I wonder if Game Freak will ever make a 'special' game based on this manga. I would be one fan to enthusiastically play.
By the way, I am commenting this as I am reading vol. 15. I might change my comment a bit afterwards.
i dont even play pokemon and started reading the series because i used to watch the anime. i agree its better!!! its less redundant and the plot is great. my only wish would be that "red" (or ash) could be the protagonist the whole way through... when reading a series i like one protagonist the whole way through instead of like twenty. oh well, i know the author is trying to stay true to the game!
