Not as expected

Rather than following the arcs seen in Skip Beat, where the heroine displays her talent through actually doing it (acting or modelling), The One uses modelling as an accessory. It's there as a convenient tool to progress the plot, rather than actually being important. I guess I was hoping for more scenes where Lele shows that she CAN model under various circumstances (If I remember correctly, it was only once or twice), but instead, there's the relationship and dynamics between Lele and the twins. It becomes more of a corrupt story where the leads are manipulated into very toxic love relations due to complicated family, and it spirals into a more psychological story. It's very focused on the brothers, and how their relationship is actually the plot, rather than centring on Lele.
If you want to read something that talks about the psychology on abuse, this might be for you. However, it's not executed very well, and its all over the place.

Something worth reading

This was one manga where the character development went from zero to hundred in the first few chapters so that the manhua jia had the opportunity to use the mid-to-last chapters to describe the drama faced by the characters in the modelling world. (possibly real-life dramas, but nothing too exaggerated I hope!)

I recommend this manhua because of how real Lele could be in terms of personality. She is not weak like the other female leads, and she doesn't cry as often but she still cries because she's a girl and she works hard for what she wants - granted that she's quite lucky because she turned out to be so successful. The male leads are okay - despite having long hair they still look great in the manhua so plus points for the good art factor here.

Plot-wise there isn't much scheming going around but definitely a lot of drama concerning most of the characters. Depending on your tolerance-level sometimes it might frustrate you but it's fun reading how the characters deal with it and how some of them support each other through it.

I recommend this manhua for those just looking for a relaxing but stimulating read, something to pass their time without putting much thought into it.

melodrama...

This manhwa started off well, but as it neared its current chapters, the quality of it dropped. The plot is so mediocre and cliche. With a few plot twists here and there to prolong the separation of Lele and Eros. I remember reading this manhwa for the determination Lele has to get to the top of the industry. Instead, the focus of the entire story has been shifted. It's okay if it's a small part of the manhwa, but when the relationship of the 2 take over the entire mahwa, the original pull of the manhwa is lost and this just becomes a sappy melodrama. Additionally, anyone beside the main characters are forgetable. When characters are re-introduced into the plot, I have difficulty recalling them and am usually unable to remember who the hell they were. They are quite 2-dimensional and I often think that characters are conjured up just for the convenience of putting a plot twist. The manhwa's like "Remember this 'character' that showed up for one chapter? No? Well, he's now a major part of the next couple chapters until the main character no longer needs them smile " It is quite exhausting constantly having to scan through previous chapters. The character's infatuation with Angus also irked me. It was kind of baseless and ridiculous how almost EVERYONE was ready to unconditionally "love" Angus.

The stronger part of the story is perhaps the portrayal of the corruption and selfishness of the world. Among the happy sequences, darker subjects are also addressed. Each of the (main) cast has their share of hardships and while they're cliche, may add a layer to the characters.

Stop at chapter 81...

this manhwa is great at first but then it just went downhill. Drawing are good! It's just that when you start reading like maybe chapter 50+ you'll get bored since it kind of just move from 'fashion' to 'love triangle'. No hate, I like some romance but not ALL OF IT.

Although I hate to say this but...I don't think I'll continue reading it. It's just waaaay too long for a manhwa even though I prefer manhwa with loads of chapter. If you get what I mean.

If you guys are really interested in manhwa with REALLY GOOD DRAWING and AWESOME STORYLINE, you can go read 100% Perfect Girl. By far my no.1 list since last year and it's completed so hey! Another plus right?

If you love..

...melodrama then by all means this is the manhua for you.

I did appreciate the refreshing pace of the story and its characters when I had initially followed it prior to it becoming more popular. Let me just say, it was lovely! The characterisation of Lele, the mentor-student relationship she developed with Eros, her going from strength-to-strength in her modeling career.. you could only think the story would move forward in leaps and bounds.

I was severely disappointed. They had to add in that extra element of an emotionally unstable twin brother (it honestly seems like he should be clinically deemed as a psychopath), and a love rival in the form of a more beautiful Feidna. The tropes kept popping up one after another. It was endless (almost as endless as the number of people Angus has bedded in this series).

Anyway, now that I've written a review almost as equally as melodramatic as this manhua, it's time I unveil my rating for it: 6.4 out of 10.

Character growth: 7 (strong at beginning; currently at a level of stagnation as the plotline seems to be solely focused on the bizarre Lele-Angus-Eros love triangle)
Plotline: 6 (had some originality to it.. however, becoming abit dry now)
Aesthetic appeal: 7 (I do enjoy the drawings, but sometimes she draws their features too harshly [very angular, not soft like how human features are supposed to be])
Personal enjoyment: 5.5 (I did love it, but if I'm rating this based on the recent chapters I'll have to say it truly deserves this mark).

The One

Still can't figure out why the title is 'The One'..?

Anyway, It has been more than a year that I stopped reading this manga, I came to Baka to check it's scan progress, too bad it's been a year since a new chapter has released. I read till around 80 chapters and rejoiced on the fact that
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the leads finally did it xP ;)
The only thing in the story that has yet to fall in place is
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the hero's revenge plot and his twin's love life with that older guy. Sorry don't remember the names xP

As for liking the series, yes, it was really good. I read it at a stretch a few years ago and so found some of the chapters stagnant. Overall, a good impression, pretty deep with characters having their own physiological problems to deal with. The story began with the main focus on the fashion industry but as it progressed, it began to stress more on personal lives, which kinda blew it out of proportion. It's just my personal view, so no harm done. I like the series which is no average shoujo or josie, mind.
I would definitely recommend it and if you liked this series then don't forget to read YOUTH GONE WILD; Nikki's other work. I'd pick the latter to read any day over THE ONE.

A cross between Kiki and Aizawa

Managed to survive 14 volumes though I still can't figure out why. I'm not particularly fond of the fashion world to begin with so I can't even begin to understand why one would go to the extreme of breaking family ties to push another to pursue a catwalk-dream. It's not as if modelling is a job that heals, feeds, creates or produces anything for society. Maybe the art, beautiful boys, angst, BL bits, quirky characters and reality-bites-darkness kind of reminded me of Kiki's style. Perhaps it's amusing that her girls appear very Yazawa-ish.

Decent Read

Good Manga about modelling however nothing special with the main character. Very typical. Wimpy, funny then determine and becomes wimpy again personality. Falls for the next good looking guy, got rejected & then showed some sign that's she's in love type. What set this manhua from other shojo manga apart, is that it has more LGBT than straight characters and that the story sometimes focus on the struggles of an LGBT character. Overall the manga have good steady plot but nothing remarkable to be called special or rare.
