Hana Yori Dango, I love
A little embarrassed to say, I've only finished reading this about a day ago. Because of it's popularity, I've come across this manga several times years ago, but never bothered to read it due the given plot synopsis putting me off. I was like, "'F4'?? You gotta be kidding me".
However, years later, with all the hype going on with the drama being aired on our local channel, I had to give it a try.
And boy, am I glad I did. This is officially one of my faves. I won't even talk about the art, as i'm sure it's already been mentioned in past posts (surprisingly, I didn't have such a big problem with it) ---in fact, the art made it much funnier to read.
This is one intensely emotional manga. Whenever I read this, I was either laughing, smiling at myself, or even crying (or on the verge of -).
Hana Yori Dango is a very typical shoujo, with it's cliché plot and scenes, but it's the detail within and in the characters and how they respond to the situation that makes it truly a great read. It is, without a doubt, the characters and their development throughout that give this manga it's charm. Never before have I cheered on both sides of a love triangle (sort of) as both Doumyouji and Rui are two very alluring male characters. Rui is the emo-loner-man who we see open up and show us the ever-caring and understanding person he is, while Doumyouji is the spoiled, violent brat who undeniably changes from boy to man as we see him become one of the most loving and determined men I have ever read. The heroine, Makino, is very appealing, herself. Unlike most shoujo heroines, her strength and independence despite her situation and confusion is truly admirable. I could go on about each character, but I'm sure that would eventually bore you.
It's true, this manga is very long, but once you find yourself enjoying it, 241 chapters fly by, and before you know it, you'll be on the last chapter hoping it doesn't end.
The one thing I loved most about this manga was the comedy. It definitely balanced out the drama, and I even enjoyed how it sometimes ruined the romantic moods.
Hana Yori Dango, overall, is an enjoyable read for those who are patient enough to read through it's flaws. Now I see why it is so popular.

....not that good
I read this with high hopes but those came crashing down. If you came to read about a girl who's mentally strong... you're gonna have to deal with the major flaws. Yes she has a strong mentality but she's also reeeeaaallly annoying.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
she plays with the two main character's hearts and feelings, i like you! no but my heart beats for him! and etc.
it's damn annoying. this goes on for most of the story. and the morals are pretty screwed up too. if you're rich you can do anything you like and get away with it.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the girl gets trashed dumped on her, gets bullied, REALLY BADLY and ends up falling for the guy who did that shit to her. now i don't know about you but i think that's kind of wrong. and the guy never says sorry (even after like, 50 chapters) or shows remorse or gets reprimanded.
to be honest, i don't understand all the hype about this!
This is one of my favorites! Just a warning to all you new readers, don't let the art at the beginning turn you off (it eventually gets better, trust me!). Actually, I think I'm one of the few people who like the art from beginning to end (since I got used to the style in the 90's) and besides, it provides a funnier vibe. Then again, the plot is too engaging that you won't mind the art much anymore. If you think this is a cliche shoujo, think again. This is a CLASSIC. This manga is probably one of the biggest inspirations of all the cliches you're reading in the latest shoujo titles now.
Tsukushi Makino is one of the strongest female leads I've ever seen. True, she doesn't have the physical strength of super man. But she is VERY emotionally strong, spunky, independent, stubborn, stands up for what she believes is right and despite her tough persona, she has a warm/forgiving heart. She also has her moments of weakness but that just makes her more human. I consider her a very inspirational heroine.
What impressed me more in this manga is the character growth and the couple development. You get to love and hate the characters at the same time. It shows how fleshed out they are cause you get to see both their good and bad traits. Perhaps I am really more drawn to the characters rather than the plot itself (cause there are arcs that are too unrealistic it's funny. lol).
If you have seen the anime/drama versions, don't skip this manga! It has its own charm and differences. I actually laughed and cried more while reading this manga than the adaptations.

It's too long, but it's saved by really good pacing. Too much stupid twists. The ending itself is very lazy and stupid... But I'm used to this already. Overall it's a good manga unless you have allergies to some of its components. Like all that social inequality crap with strict parents and arranged marriages. Adds to the drama at first, but gets old really fast. Even in one manga. Another annoying factor was that I misspredicted pairing and expected another outcome. Which never came.
One of the greatest shoujos of all time.
This manga has it all. It has all the romantic guilty pleasures that make shoujo mangas stand out, but at the same time, written tastefully and with care. All the characters are lovable and the humor will make you smile. The main character is a girl to root for. This is a very sweet manga and one of the best.
Lol, this manga was quite long, but it was very enjoyable~. I began to read 2 chapters, but dropped it cuz of the art..sorry DX so I tried watching the Korean drama (first time trying to watch something Korean) it was very good so I picked up the manga again, I got used to the art and the art improves. There is character development, and most of the characters are likeable. Though Makino's parents pissed me off so much...way too irresponsible and greedy, Makino went through so much and her parents did not help. Overall, its pretty good. Also, the scanalations were...uh...poor ish? There were many empty bubbles and mistakes. >.< not trying to be a total jerk or anything..it just made some thongs confusing..
i freakin love it!
Its just amazing! First of the characters are just so interesting and unique and the really does a good job of showing their good sides and bad sides, explaining their lifestyle and why they act the way they do. All characters make some type of character growth, especially the 2 main characters. Then the plot is just interesting and its hard to tell whats going to happen next. It just a typical shoujo manga where they fall in love unbelievably fast. It takes time for them to realize their feelings for each and more time for them to love each other so much they can't stand the idea of being away from each other. I highly recommend it: great plot, nice classic art, interesting characters. Trust me, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get mad, and you'll defiantly fall in love with this manga ^_^
i don't know about other people but i didn't really like the art but the characters were pretty cool. the heorine was strong. but it was sooo long that i just got bored and didn't want to read any more.
I love Tsukasa, i dont care of he is a bully at the end you know he wasnt the stupid man who slap everyone, he was really in love :c an Rui makes me cry everytime that i remember him :C i love this manga I'll read it again, every year <3 And yes the art is not the best but at the end you just love it
This is by far one of my favorites. It starts off kind of slow, with some awkward moments like on the island when Tsukasa finds Makino with another member of the F4 and then when Tsukasa agrees to dating/being with the girl his mom set him up with to break away from Makino. After those, the story gets really interesting and do does the art for at the beginning the characters, especially Makino and Tsubasa, didn't look that well drawn but the art gets a lot better the more the story goes. And, this was the first manga imever that I cried after reading one part (when Makino almost leaves Tsubasa on the the bus but gets off the bus because she truly does love Tsubasa). It's just a great story I can read over and over again. I really suggest reading it!!
