10/10 2nd story alone.
Cried like a...............just imagine the worst uncontrollable crying scene of a child ever. No I'm not a child.
With so many comments already dedicated to it, you should have no doubt of how awesome this is.
As for the other stories, they're really special, nothing like the common....stuff, nothing at all. Really want to see some continuation - 1 or 2 pages - like an after story for them, but I guess that's also part of the charm.

wooow, seems like the author made a good proportion
I love the second story and the most fourth story, where the feelings of the character reached the reader (at least for me) very well. Honestly, for me, nothing special comes from the first and third stories.

I really recomment this. I mean, even though the art is not "THAT PRETTY" but, give a shot for the plot. It damn interesting, enough flavour and the "NOT THAT PRETTY" art turn out to be a lovely one for you.

I don't know how many times I cried after read this again and again... so I afraid re-read this, mostly the 2nd and 4st oneshot. My chest feel hurt so soft, very soft and I don't know how I can release this feeling...
Although I'm not a soft-hearted or anything, I don't know why I can't stand while reading this manga. No comment about plot, story, character or drawing, cause I love all about manga of Midorikawa-sensei

A lot of people have written detailed and profound comments about this series. I gave this manga 8.6 ratings overal. This comment of mine is to tell the fact that some chapters really deserves much higher ratings. The second story, classic. How can I describe it? That was outstanding, heart-wrenching and powerful. It was great the first time I read it and still remains to be one of the best I have ever read. I think an author named Sumeko had written a story named Kon no Konoha (?) with nicer artwork but basically the same storyline. It did make me cry, however, the manga failed to impress me as Hotaru no Mori did. The feelings of Hotaru no Mori lingers years after you finish it. I would give this chapter alone 9.2 or above. And for the record, it would be the highest I have ever given. The fourth story was bittersweet and soooo good, too. I can give it ̣. The first story was sweet romance but for me, I'd give it only 8.4. Then the third one, sadly it didn't give me any interest. It was Ok but I couldn't help to skip a few pages. So an 8 for it drag down the overal score for the manga.

Midorikawa's art never looks much better than a doujinshi done by a sixteen-year-old, but don't let that fool you. She's one of the best storytellers in the field today, and these short stories are her at her best. She builds a unique atmosphere for all of her stories - nostalgic, thoughtful, ocassionally dreamlike, and always distinctively Japanese. The title story in particular uses mono no aware nearly as well as Ashinano and the rest of the greats. It'll linger in my memory for a long time to come.
that is beautiful...just beautiful....the 2nd story pulled at my heart....and the 4th story was just so bittersweet....those were the best (to me) of this volume...sigh...i kind of want to know what happens next...but the endings are perfect just the way they are no extra fluff or picture perfect endings...that's what makes these stories so great...
1st story- hmmm...it has a really mellow feeling in it...the guy was a bit emo...also with the guitar...but i really like the concept of guitar so it was a bit sweet!~
2nd stroy- *sigh*...awww~ that was so sweet and it gaves such a wonderful feeling inside me...because i also like the summer...its as if im really there!! yeah it is incredibly tragic and painful...but still its nice!! fufufufu...escpecially the moment when she took of his mask...i love that!!
3rd story- very cute...and touching...oh the purity and innocence of childhood love!~ <spoken like an old person...*coughonly14cough* also the ninja thing...two thumbs up! you dont see that on your everyday shoujo manga...
4th story- oooohhhh...that gave me such a great pain and lovely feeling inside..i cant really describe it...it was like there was this warm feeling in me while i was reading it...i want to sigh over and over again cause its just so sad!! even though it has incest...i dont think of it as disturbing...yeah hell with science...and hail human emotions!! i cant really say anymore cause i will be spoiling it...
oh! and also hafta describe the art...it wasnt really sparkly sparkly beautirul...it was sketchy but i like it cause it fitted the stories which i think gave them more depth...i really love it!!

This is the 2nd time I read this story but the feelings are the same. The aftertaste is indescribable. This story is really beautiful (usually I don't like sad stories but this story is different!! I LOVE IT!!!). It left me speechless!! The story is so sad yet beautiful and there are more to it than just painful losses. I couldn't cry after this, really!!(strange)
Ps: I wonder if there is any connection between "Hotarubi no mori e" and "Kon no ki konoha"? They're really similar.
