However, even with all its benefits, magic can also be used for great evil; therefore, to prevent dark forces from upsetting the natural order of things, there exists a system of magical guilds in the Kingdom of Fiore. Under the command of their respective guild masters, these guilds are made up of witches and wizards who take on various job requests to earn fame and fortune. One particular guild stands high above the rest in both strength and spirit, and its name is Fairy Tail.
In his quest to find his dragon foster father—Igneel—Natsu Dragneel, a fiery and reckless mage, and his partner Happy run into a young celestial mage by the name of Lucy Heartfilia, who reveals that it's her dream to become a full-fledged wizard and join the Fairy Tail guild. After rescuing her from an abduction attempt, Natsu offers her a home in Fairy Tail. Now a member of the guild, Lucy teams up with Natsu and befriends fellow wizards Gray Fullbuster and Erza "Titania" Scarlet. Together, this motley crew set out on their many adventures, gaining many faithful allies and deadly foes along the way.

ok one ignore all the comments about this being a one piece knock off because its so far from the truth its not even funny. fact of the matter is i love fairy tail and couldnt stand one piece. the only way fairy tail is anything like one piece is the fact that the starting core team is two guys and a girl. which if you wanna go there i'd say about 85% of manga are like one piece then. like any media theres bound to be things that are simular.
all in all this manga rocks my socks and the anime isnt half bad either.

I think it's pretty disappointing if we can just ascribe numbers to mangas that influence other peoples' beliefs, simply because we're turned off at first sight. I mean, I'm a firm believe of individual choice, but to post a "wall of text" rant just because the characters look like something you've seen is, honestly, one of the worst ways I've seen to review a Manga.
Moving on, I admit that I was initially surprised by how similar the characters looked like OP - in fact, I went to check if the authors were the same (Hiro Mashima and Oda are two different people). That aside, I tried to read on and enjoy the story - and I did! In fact, this is all the more surprising because I normally don't like mangas that have odd-looking characters - novelty has to be reigned in by, uh, a willingness not to repulse your readers, I think. (I don't like ecchi either, so sue me.)
Rarely do we find Shounens that're willing to let their main characters take the backstage, or let others take down the first big boss, or tell stories about everyone else. In short, character evolution. I admire Fairy Tail - as I did Fruits Basket - for its ability to put aside Natsu or Lucy now and then and talk about others - I especially liked the Loki/Leo arc nearly as much as I did Momiji in FB, if you've read it.
I'm not stingy with my marks, but I'm not generous either. People have an aversion for giving 10 sometimes, and cover it up with something weird like 9.8476, so that they can later point to 10 people with the standard "haha, you're WRONG, nothing is perfect in this world". Well, I think that's a ridiculous way of thinking. Assigning arbitrary numbers to determine value has always been an imperfect - if not impossible - art. So I have no qualms about giving a 10 so long as it has beautiful, climatic moments here and there, and doesn't do something ludicrously stupid - like letting Ichigo acquire some world-destroying power to kill Aizen, or killing Hitsugaya only to tell us it was a clone, for example. Those are fine so long as there's foreshadowing - which was what made the Aizen betrayal so wildly popular - but it becomes unbelievable if it's there to fit in the plot. And Fairy Tail nicely dances past the pitfalls that're typical of these popular Shounen. I mean, the greatest criticism could be that Natsu has been powering up all the way, but it's been gradual so far, and Erza's told us all along that she knew Natsu had more power than her. And at no point in time does Mashima randomly give Lucy a Bankai without reason - she beat the Trinity via Unison with Juvia (already at S-class level) and Bixlow with Loke, and even when I was preparing to be disappointed and downgrade FT during the S-class arc when Lucy and Kana thrashed Fried and Bixlow... Mashima got me again with a realistic explanation that I never predicted.
It's nice if you can tie everything in a story to some beautiful, deep, central theme, but that's just one style of storytelling and has its own constraints. Even if FT doesn't seem to have that, every arc adds believable layers to everyone's personalities, and has it's own strengths and originality. Perhaps the icing that might make me severely tempted to try giving FT a 11 is if in the final arc, it might give us something we missed all along - a Grand Unifying Theory that's been hinted at all along - but right now I think Mashima'll be content with my 10.

One of the few series that actually gets better and better along the way. It's both awesome and funny depending on the moment, and I like the art. There is no real plot as a whole, maybe a few links between arcs here and there but each is very different from the others ( aside from the fact that they fight strong opponents) so i just give it a 9.5 instead of a perfect 10.
What I also really like is that there is no "amazing training and then in 3 days the main charcter kills everyone with his super skill he just learnt", which I think always kills the manga (I don't mind long time-skips which are actually believable, but there is none here either so no problem anyway)
I believe if you like action-types shounen then give this one a try, you won't regret it.

Fairy Tail is really a "fairy tale" because you will surely learn something great in each of its story arcs. also, all the characters [yep, even some of the villains!] have personalities you will certainly like or can relate too! all in all, Fairy Tail is a manga worth reading. in my case, one of the best shounen mangas i've ever read!
DAMN!! this manga made me cry all the time!!

I did not like this manga. At some moments, I was even repulsed. Here are the reasons why I did not like these series:
1 - The outstanding worship of One Piece.
2 - The main character is a copy of Luffy of One Piece.
3 - The gruesome amount of fanservice since the presentation of Erza.
4 - The presentation of a new team of baddies (who turn out to be total wimps in the end) each volume and getting through them the same lame way…
5 - The reviving of popular characters among the fans and then whipping up some half-assed explanation which is as lame as they go.
6 – Filling plotholes with a regular query sheet with questions from the readers (named POSTFACE) attached to the end of each volume.
I even wrote some wall of text as to why I did not like these series. Well, I won't gain anything if I convince someone that this manga is kind of bad, so I decided not to post what I've written.

Ever since the coolest character in the series, Mistgun, happened to be with the mug of Gerard, I knew this manga was over for me.

I used to really like this series, I really did, but it failed to reach its potential. Normally a story, especially a shounen story, is meant to be more exciting as the plot continues. This manga fails to do so.
Fairy Tail is essentially an underdeveloped manga. It should have started doing its stories in a more larger scale but instead, it consists of the kinds of stories you see in a sort of introductory phase in action manga. Simple, and short. Which was fine in the beginning, cause no one expects a lot in the first few chapters. The problem was, that it never actually improved.
Eventually it became uninteresting. Nothing much has changed since the beginning. Characters have not become that much stronger and the villains are around the same level of strength. The thing is, it could have been outstanding, but nothing about it has stood out, which is why it seems like its a dragging series right now.

i love the fairy tail and i hope it never stops. all of you that talk about how its like one piece piss me off. one piece sucks and is for little kids. i tried to watch one piece 2 times but just couldnt watch it cause of that damn character with the pinocchio nose. id say that about 90% of that chars in one piece are annoying. you people that say that the friendship thing is not realistic are fools becuase you have not ever had real friendships. in friendships you learn to forgive and people that dont forgive and hold grudges arnt liked. everyone in fairy tail have a positive outlook on life and that is why they are such a strong guild. it reminds me of the last rugby team i was on we all went through harsh times where some people on the team broke rules and our coach would try to kick them off the team but we would stick together and forgive and make the coach forgive. that was why we were such a strong team it is becasue of the bonds we had for one another(we made it to the championship game). you people havent gone through that part in your life yet cause you all are probably still just kids..so all you bad comment people grow up and try to make trustworthy friends and create bonds...and you will understand this manga..o yeah even the anime soundtrack music is beautiful lol....mgehring you are dull and have no friends xD
Please read properly 2 manga then compare them '___' . Comparing a manga that you read until now to the manga you just read some chapters or some volumes is unfair.
I still follow 2 manga, and I'm still interested in Fairy Tail, but if someone ask me what is the manga I like more, than no doubt it's One Piece. Those things you said just make me understand that you have just read some chapters/volumes and judge One Piece. And I can bring you some info, that 9/10ths of One Piece buyers are adults ( http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-02-09/nhk/9/10ths-of-one-piece-mang a-buyers-are-adults ) . And me, 20 years old, an adult, too. Don't say "for little kids" by your thinking.
About Fairy tail, it's funny, and there're some characters I like so I still follow this manga.

It got better. And now it's one of my top three shounen.
Initially, I hated it because the theme was hugely cliche and characters and settings were simply replacements of One Piece, but it went bit further in the character development and got bigger in the family of likable characters. Now, I am waiting in the line to read every weekly chapter just like I do for my other favorites.
