I wonder if the people who think Vagabond is slow are English readers?
I've read the Japanese version up till vol 20 and didn't find the pace bothersome, it felt very 'right' for the depth of the content.
Since I coulnd't get my hands on the Japanese version from 21-24, I've read the English version.. and I've found the pace a little slow.
I personally think translations don't transfer the atmosphere/depth very efficiently... it's not the quality of the translators, it's just impossible to do so, which is a real shame...

As stated it's a bit slow, but not that slow. Allmost every manga with a deep story is slow so why complain? Did I mention the arts? It's magnificent!!
Awesome

This is a great manga, with only one flaw; its pacing. The art is great, the fights are great and the story is pretty interesting. The problem with the pacing is a result of its format. Manga are inherently slow, since it takes time to draw all those pages, as opposed to a book, which can be written within a year, and contain 30-40 manga volumes worth of material. The manga delves too deep into quasi-philosophical babbling, which has little impact on the story. Considering it's a manga, it would have been a better choice to get on with the story or squeeze more text into each page, instead of spending an entire volume reading about two guys facing off in the woods (where they spend half of the volume just staring each other down, while two spectators chat about various stuff). In another example, Musashi spends 5 whole chapters holding a sword over an old man's bed ridden body, with absolutely no progression. It could easily have been contained in one chapter, but the author basically wastes a lot of time that could be used to further the story.
That being said, the manga is still great. It's not as much of a problem if you can get your hands on all the volumes and read them consecutively, but it becomes a problem once you catch up to the japanese releases, and you're stuck with reading only a few chapters a week. I mean, would you really want to read a manga that spends two or three months just getting through a sequence that takes less than a minute in the manga?
Still, I can highly recommend this, and would gladly have given it a nine or ten if the pacing had been better.

One of the best seinen there is. Agree with Bettum though... It is a tiny bit slow. But the slowness is rewarded by character development!
A must read, definitely.

Great art and great storytelling with some touches of humor. I find myself grinning at times while reading this. Inoue really delves into the characters, easily enabling the reader to lose him/herself to the story... Truly a great read.
A masterpiece...dynamic characters, moving story, great action...Vagabond's got it all...
one of the best manga ever
Great manga. I love it. connsider it recommended. I didn't rate it 10 'cause it is a bit slow. But thats my impression so don't let it get to u.
Though action is some of the core in this manga, it should be suitable for anyone above 12. However the nudity and the sex could be a problem (at least in the states. Even the upper part of a woman is considered 18+ there lol). 15+ shouldn't be a problem. I would love reading this when I was 12 though.
