Amazing

I have to disagree with some other reviews here. Firstly, even though its titled "Kuroko's Basketball", it doesnt mean that it'll only focus on him, obviously you have to bear in mind that the main plot is about him trying to defeat the other GOMs, so of course some focus on the other "basketball giants" is to be expected. Plus they are all interesting characters so instead of just having one great main character, Kuroko, there are all the other likeable side characters too. In fact there isn't a single one that I dislike, even the so called "enemies" have charm.
Also something that a few people mentioned that really irritated me is how its too over exagerated apparently. Well firstly, I think all manga is slightly exaggerated, as it would be extremely boring to read about an ordinary character, living an ordinary life, where nothing exciting or unusual ever happens. If a book like that exists then what would be the point? So moaning about it being unrealistic is just stupid.
Besides, here are some examples of popular shounen manga; Attack on Titan, Naruto and Prince of Tennis… are any of those realistic? I don't think so. As its also a sports manga then Prince of Tennis is more comparable, but really, the special skills that they possess are ridiculous. I know the GOMs have their own amazing abilities too, but they are more believable in my opinion.
The anime adaptation of this is also incredible. The seiyuu all fit their roles perfectly, and they really do bring the characters to life. I also found that some moments in the anime had more of an impact than they did in the manga, just because of the emotion the seiyuu's expressed. For instance, after the Kaijou vs Too match, I thought Ryohei Kimura's portrayal of Kise's reaction was brilliant. (Obviously I'm not saying the anime is better than the manga, in fact I think both are amazing, but all the voice actors really are wonderful so I think its important to mention)
There are so many other reasons why I adore this series, but I can't list all of them right now. I'll edit this comment later but for now all you need to know is this manga is epic. Seriously.

Enjoyable read.

Not bad. The characters are endearing, charming, and... very, very moe. The interactions between the characters, and their bonds, are strong, deep, and well-written. I liked that Kuroko came from the very top with the GOM (Generation of Miracles) and is a veteran, instead of being a rookie. His past--and the breakdown of the GOM was particularly moving.
Someone criticized the title for being lame or something--but I think it's straight-forward and carries meaning. It's about Kuroko's basketball--how he overcame his weakness of lack of conventional talent, and created his own way of playing the sport he loves so dearly, how he manages to make everyone acknowledge his worth as a basketball player, his wish to play in a real team, rather than a league of one-man teams. All this, and the stories of the people his life that surround and affect him.
I was impressed with how well paced this was. The matches felt like they went faster than the long chapters I was actually reading. The art later on is absolutely fantastic (save for Momoi and Riko--I can't figure out if Momoi is actually supposed to be attractive, or maybe she's just poorly drawn--Alex is the only good-looking female in this series.) The expressions of the characters in this manga are great--especially Kuroko's furious face, and his "we'll win now!" and "even so, it's better than losing here" faces. The humour isn't disruptive, and is funny rather than lame (well, except for Izuki, of course) unlike certain sports manga I've attempted to read.
A lot of people are complaining about the move names, and I have no idea why, because seriously--I don't care what you say, "Right of Postponement", "Ankle Break", "Ignite Pass Kai" all sound super-cool. This is a fictional shounen manga--what's wrong with cool move names?
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Also, I have no idea how the mangaka managed to make streamers (Zone) flowing from the eyes look cool.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
And I liked that they lost quite early, too, instead of one predictable win after another. In one match where Seirin finally managed to lead, I'm glad they dealt with the difficulties of being the pursued rather than the pursuer, and the difficulties of the crowd antagonizing them rather than always being "the good guys".

I do have one major complaint, though. This manga is a huge tease. I won't explain it any further than that.

Okay, so after all the annoying comparisons to Slam Dunk, I attempted to pick it (SD) up again.
But before that, comparing the two is silly. The entire point of KuroBasu is that the main protagonist isn't tall, built, strong, and totally hot-headed. You have Kagami for that--and the character type is so overused he's usually not very high in the popularity polls. Kuroko is a kuudere, and he's just... so different, that it's refreshing.
For all the stunts that the characters do, at least the mangaka cared to put in the tedious effort to explain things in a way that they'd make sense in theory. The GOM are called "Miracles" for a reason--their abilities are supposed to be impossible by normal means. The point is they're not normal, and they're in a fictional universe. This is fiction--isn't one of the main points of fiction being able to escape from the boring reality?
Without all these super-fancy moves, I'm pretty sure I would've gave up halfway into the first volume like I did with Slam Dunk the first time. I'd imagine it took a long time to come up with those ideas, and then apply them to the characters in a way to make them interesting and appealing. I think the work put into that deserves some acknowledgement, at least. By including all these "ridiculous stunts", it creates interest for a much wider audience, for those who would otherwise have better things to read. Slam Dunk's demographic, I'm sure, would be mostly male. For KuroBasu, though the active fandom is pretty much predominantly female, the reader demographic seems to be more or less equivalent in gender.
This is a shounen manga, not a seinen manga, so Real isn't even relevant (not that it isn't amazingly well written and drawn). More than "real sports", this is more like... "moe sports". I do not apologize for well-executed moe. (By moe, I mean the fact that Kagami is the Light, and Kuroko is his Shadow. The promises between characters. Aomine's story.) I find each character, especially the members of the Generation of Miracles (I don't care what you people say, it sounds super cool) much more interesting and memorable than most characters in the other shounen manga you people have so far mentioned in comparison. From the hot-headed sports heroes, one sees their determined faces so often that it's common to get desensitized. With Kuroko, who's normally expressionless and calm--to see his furious face, his extremely determined face, has much more of an impact. I liked that the main team went against the stereotype of having a cute female manager, and instead went with a tough, comedically ruthless, cool female coach. I especially loved that the women in this aren't just Mary Sue pin-up mascots that were just there because there needed to be a love interest. ("Love interest": read "boring, shallow infatuation".) KuroBasu basically has little to no mutual male-female romance, actually...

All that matters is that KuroBasu is interesting. As for the people who say that it's gotten dull, personally I've found it more interesting. The Aomine vs Kagami battle was brilliant, Akashi alone is reason enough to read this, and the Teikou arc is fffffffantastically heart-breaking and moving.

Now, onto re-trying Slam Dunk: So far the humour is painfully lame and old-fashioned (well, it IS old-school manga...), so I don't know what the guy saying that SD humour is better has been smoking. I've seen KuroBasu bloopers funnier than this. I want to throw the witless "romance" out the window. The main character is a dolt and super annoying, and not even the slightest bit likeable--Kagami is much more likeable as a character. Every time anyone says "dunk", they say "slam dunk", and it's so lame I can't even handle it--ugh. "Can't you throw it more softly? Your opponent is still a weak girl." No. KuroBasu has Alex--and here we're stuck with her? SD throws around the "best basketball player in Japan" label like butter. Screw Slam Dunk. Maybe it gets better later on, but I'm not going to approve of a manga that fails to keep me reading from the get-go.

Kuroko reminds me of Prince of Tennis a lot. Like it's been mentioned before, the basketball is crazy unrealistic. It's perfect for people like me who read sports manga for the thrill of the competition and don't mind the details of the sport as much, but it is pretty far-fetched.

After reading through to the current chapters, I think the strongest and most enjoyable part of this manga is how the backstories of unique characters are linked up to each match. I find the characters here more memorable and each match more emotional in kuroko than in some other sports manga which makes up the best reading experience. Enjoy the humor, emotion, and character development in this manga. It makes it worth the ridiculous basketball moves.

Well. I am not a sport freak, so when I started this, I was not sure where it would go. But the more I read, the more it got me interested.
It is quite similar to Tennis no Oujisama, in the fact that it is not "real sport". The shoot they have are all unreal, even if they are all explained so you think that in theory it hangs together. So it's a no go for the people who wants the real sport. But for me, this is a plus, because I don't get bored reading it!
This manga is full of good feelings: sportsmanship, friendship, humor, and character growth. It even has an inkling of romance, but so diluted that it doesn't disturb the real purpose of this manga: be the best basketball team.
So, a good read. I specially loved the re-take at the end of every chapters... Shame that it seems the author dropped it. I hope it will come back!

I started this series without much expectations, I just wanted to see what all the praise was about. I normally don't read sports mangas, especially shounen ones because of all the ridiculous superpowers and power ups the characters receive during their training arcs. It took me awhile to realize I actually LIKED this series, in fact I really really liked it.
The story is solid enough and enjoyable, I think the pacing is well done as well as the humor, but the best part of the manga I believe is the characters. They are pretty much what makes the series shine in my opinion. The mangaka has done a great job of juggling the characters and balancing them out, there aren't really any super stereotypical characters that most shounen mangas have, and they have their own personality and depth. What I appreciate the most is that the abilities of each character isn't really supernatural or just outrageously ridiculous. Realistic? No, but the level of ridiculousness the abilities the characters have is controlled and not mind numbingly dumb like they do in another sports manga Prince of Tennis.
I think Kuroko no Basuke is doing just fine the way it is, and it's proven that it still has a lot of potential to grow and get better. So far I don't find that the series is dragging, everything that has happened seemed appropriate for the story to continue or for characters to get stronger. Sure, it still has the whole typical setup of a sports manga but instead of finding that boring, you'll find that you hardly notice it.
If you are reading this series to judge it and compare it to another sports manga you like, then why bother? This series stands out on its own and should be enjoyed without a clouded opinion.

Where is Kuroko?

Ok, so this manga is "a bit" unrealistic but thanks to its humour and the unique main character I still find it very enjoyable. I'm not a sport manga fan so it's easier for me to ignore those unrealistic plots. The only and also most obnoxious problem to me is: Where is Kuroko?!!

Don't tell me about his special "lack of presence" ability. Despite how much special his ablity can be he still IS the MAIN character and that mean what I want to focus the most on this manga is KUROKO not just a bunch of "miracle" giant guys or the stale team-work idea. You could find those miracle giant characters or the "power of teamwork/mental strength'' thing in any other sport manga but what make Kuroro no basket fresh and unique IS Kuroko and this manga can NOT make use of it properly!

I want to see more of Kuroko. I want to watch him closely and observe his improving progress. What can he became. How far can he get. How great can he achieve. etc. I want him to be more IMPORTANT! His influence towards the others is NOT enough as a role of a main character. The more I like Kuroko, the more I get sick of this manga.

Hope to see sth new in the next chapters.

Living in the shadow of giants.

The inherent problem with creating a basketball manga, is that Slam Dunk! already exists.

Fujimaki is competing directly with Inoue Takehiko, which is generally unadvisable. So it's almost impossible not to draw parallels with what Slam Dunk was; a manga that had deeper and better paced character development across the board, more realistic rivalries and characters you could root for harder, better humour and less nonsense shouneny titles like the Generation of Miracles, the King of the North/East/South/yadda yadda and the Uncrowned Kings.

It's also somewhat in the shadow of Eyeshield 21 in that that manga took a *very* shounen stupid name and 'unrealistic capabilities of highschool students' approach to american footbal, a little like Kuroko no Basket did to basketball, but did it 'properly' in a sense, and went for the whole hog with a different theme for every different team and crazy moves and move names to suit that theme.

Slam Dunk! is a very realistic approach to a sports manga while Eyeshield 21 is anything but that. Both those mangas excelled at what they tried to achieve, I suppose my problem with Kuroko no Basket is that it kinda straddles the line between the two and doesn't manage to do either as well as it could have.

Not even gonna think about comparing it to Real, that wouldn't be fair.

As its own free-standing manga, it's good. Maybe slightly above average, but good. It stands out in its theme of Kuroko wanting to play basketball that's "fun" and actually enjoying the game, and influencing others, including his old teammates, to do the same. Certainly has its share of comedy moments and a very likeable cast. Having the main character be a supporting player on the court rather than the ace is a nice twist away from normal sports manga conventions but otherwise it's a nice, kinda-just-above-average sports manga that doesn't do much that hasn't been done better elsewhere. I'd recommend other sports manga before this, but hey, it's not Prince of Tennis, which can only be a good thing.

EDIT: Although, it does get rather dull later. Most sports manga have a tendency of following the "Team faces seemingly insurmountable circumstances, team falls behind in points, team/player(s) overcomes some ineptitude, team beats opposition by >10 points, rinse and repeat with a stronger rival each time until team gets beaten, train, train, train, and repeat until team beats biggest rival/wins toughest tournament." formula (gratz to That3rdGuy whose summary was accurate and concise enough for me to nick it bigrazz) - other sports manga often survive on making this pretty damn repetitive cycle feel a lot less repetitive than it is. Eyeshield 21 does so mostly by having Hiruma Youichi exist, for example, and also by having radically different teams for each game. One game they're fighting an Egyptian Pharohs-themed highschool American Football team, the next they might be fighting elite buddhist monks and the next they might be fighting dinosaurs. Baby Steps also does something similar (though not nearly as radical) with every game posing a new challenge to the main character (when he doesn't win easily at least) - psychological issues like mounting anger, pressure from crowd, as well as physical issues like fatigue. Slam Dunk! circumvents the problem by being jaw-droppingly great, mostly.

Most of Kuroko no Basket's efforts to deal with this... design flaw in the sports genre is either half-assed, unsufficient or both. Games feel like they just drag on in the later parts, as well as new rivalries/characters that feel quite shoehorned.

it was my first time reading a sport manga. i'm usually the type to go for a action/fighting based manga in shounen.(bleach one piece) etc. i had an opinion i would hate it but i honestly couldn't be any more wrong. i found myself cheering for the characters getting points in matches. the characters were like able well i like kuroko not sure on the other main character but i do like the other members of the generation of miracles people say its 'exaggerated' etc however i thought it made basketball a lot more interesting. i have caught up all ready it took me a couple of days (yes an otakuu) it was worth it i really recommend other people read it.
i honestly don't care what people say but i have read kurogane (kezawaharuto) i find kuroko no basuke a lot better than that manga series.

This is a nice basketball manga!! Honestly saying, it's my first time reading a shounen manga. I never wanted to try reading shounen manga mainly because I never liked that genre. But then I found this manga. Although it's my first shounen manga, and my first fully related to basketball manga, I can say that this is a really enjoyable manga. And of course, the one I like the most is Kuroko!!!!!!!

I love the fact that he's hidden, looks calm and then suddenly showing something flashy during the game. But what I dislike the most is how their team always looked shocked whenever their opponents went ahead of them. It's happening too much that I get pissed whenever they go like "How did they-?!" but whenever I see kuroko coming in, I'm so happy! xD

Maybe Slam Dunk might be better (I didn't read it) but this is really nice. It's not too hardcore but it's really intense and I love the drawing! I can't wait to read what happens next! And of course, I hope that the manga won't drag out to long volumes...I'm never patient with ongoing manga.

PS: I have to say though, I kinda liked Aomine. Although he's one hell of a badass. And one more thing, I never liked Kise's tactics. I don't see how copying others is called a "great talent". It's distasteful! If he have at least, his own techniques, then I would say he's a good opponent, but copying other's people technique and using them to win matches is very....fake. It kinda pisses me off although this is a fiction story.
