Unpleasant characterisation but excellent on everything else

This mangaka has always excelled at storytelling, and this time is no exception. Her narrative is always so smooth, there's hardly a glitch anywhere to be found, which only a master could be capable of. I also like her art and how it has evolved to be more modern while still retaining its original traits and roots.

I think most people's gripes with this story lie in its characters, and for good reasons. Main characters hardly seem like they've grown by the end of the series, still running around in circles in their own heads - I'm talking about both of them here, not just the seme and his awful, violent way of dealing with conflicts. They lack severe communication, they're evasive when it comes to facing confrontation, and simply being in a relationship by itself is not enough to solve their issues, but alas, romance once again is treated as a solution to so many problems, and the conclusion here is that as along as they're in love, it'll somehow all work out in the end even though neither party has put in effort.

I definitely would've preferred a different outcome regarding these clashing personalities and the potential progress they could have made to develop as independent people.

Sora and the Art deserve a 10/10, but Tetsuya ...

Okay, seriously, I love the mangaka and the manga. Even though the story uses the cliched childhood, next door neighbour, all lonely and weak trope, it really does have good pacing and development. That is until

Tetsuya FUCKING RAPES Sora, "at least let me have a pity fuck"
No, god damn no! Just no. Do you not love Sora, Tetsuya? I realllly doubt that you do. Besides this, Tetsuya is always, always,

, that's was a even more put off for me than the

because that's tantamount to denying Sora's whole existence.
Sora, really deserve someone a lot better than Tetsuya. I would have been happier if Sora had hooked up with his best friend.

I would usually rate stories like this very high, but at the end the one character that stood out the most to me was the ex-girlfriend.

The seme doesn't deserve the uke. He's not terrible either (despite that thing he did to the uke TWICE!); he's a very lost person. He's actually a weaker person than the uke, tbh. The uke who is supposed to be weak is actually a stronger person in the end than the seme who wanted to look out for him. The uke chose to confront his problems and return, while the seme ran away. I think the mangaka wanted it to be this way. The not so typical part of their characters makes it a good read I guess.

Ikusen no Yoru was perfect to my tastes!
The art style is sketchy, yet very eye catching and i found that it suited the atmosphere. That being said, i liked the art. The story is intriguing and kept me interested throughout the entire manga. There is a lot of drama between the pairing, which caused me to be frustrated with the characters. However, the drama made the story more suspenseful and i quite liked that aspect of it. Let me just say that

Tetsuya needs to learn that sex does NOT solve any problems. Instead, it just causes more problems. They never talked to each other about their misunderstandings and masked them away with sex. They both kept running away from each other when things got bad... which was annoying. They could have easily fixed their relationship issues if they just talked to one another.
Well anyways, i personally loved this manga regardless of its melodrama. It was a heart wrenching read and there were moments that left my heart feeling in pain because of how amazingly the mangaka portrayed their emotions. Tetsuya is a problematic character because most of his actions are done out of selfishness and it's aggravating at times. So yes, I do recommend Ikusen no Yoru to those who are looking for a nostalgic read and can overlook the flaws.

I really liked some aspects of this. I am a sucker for friends become lovers type stories. The first volume was pretty good. The second was good until the end.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
After the first rape, I couldn't enjoy it as much. After the second, I was pretty ticked off. It felt out of place in a story which was otherwise relatively mindful. The characters never really even talk about it. It's just another case of rape being taken lightly in BL and I'm not a fan
. I would have enjoyed this much more without all that.

I wish I could like this. It started off well, I thought it was sweet how Tetsuya wanted to protect Sora, and I really like childhood friends become lovers stories, but I soon got fed up with Tetsuya's selfishness.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
First he just moves away without giving Sora any time to come to terms with his feelings, and he doesn't bother to contact him at all. Then in the 2 or so years they've been apart, he has moved on and gotten himself a girlfriend while Sora still clearly thinks of him all the time. He then cheats on the previously mentioned girlfriend with Sora, and later forcefully takes Sora when he says he's leaving. After that he doesn't bother to contact Sora at all, and its only by chance that they meet again years later. And still, Tetsuya is selfish once again, because even though they've been reunited, just because Sora is fine on his own, Tetsuya thinks that means that they can't be together. Instead of trying to be in an equal relationship with the man he supposedly loves, he instead gets back together with his ex! He then turns down an opportunity to be with Sora and invites his ex over for the night. It's only after the ex tells him to run after Sora that he does so. To be honest, after Tetsuya leaves for uni, I just felt like his character changed. He was always running away, making Sora chase after him, and he never apologises for his behaviour. He seemed so nice at first, but then changed into a jerk, in my opinion.
The only reason I'm not rating this any lower is because I liked Sora. He's cute and managed to change his life around.

It really made my heart ache. I even cried not because it was overly dramatic but because protagonist's pain was so well conveyed. Maybe the problem was somehow resolved in the deus ex machina kind of style but anyway it was really good.

after the final cliffhanger of the second volume, i was anxious to see how the third volume, after the time skip, would treat that topic and resolve that issue. i was surprised and disappointed to see that it was pretty much ignored and forgotten as a real problem in the third volume and the story continues with some other drama-rama and a predictable conclusion. blah! and it had such nicely done first two volumes! ;(

Don't be fooled by the summary. The plot seems rather simple (and basically is) but the mangaka made it unique. The bond between the two main characters is deep and touching.I was actually really and pleasantly surprised.I picked it up expecting a time killer and I nearly found a masterpiece.
