Crazy surreal manga, that doesn't make it easy for you to get into. The opening volume lacks cohesion and makes you feel like you're going through the drunken notes of Raoul Duke. But stick with it, and greatness will follow. I won't mention the art, for it is obviously amazing.
The art is so unusual, like a doodle, fills with unusual animals and unusual fashion. Those art were being put together in the panel in funny angles occasionally. The story telling in the panel itself is also unusual; when there's conversation between peoples, sometimes the drawing that shown is the person who talks than jump to a random goat, people, or planet. Personally I need some times to get used to it (consider reading other mangas with art that you used to see). And after finally get used through that I can follow the story from the dialogues.
The story itself quite interesting, a group of 9 men called Rainbow Council, part of nations military, being put together as candy eyes of military to the society. The member itself is a leader of their own clan. Suddenly one of them, Number 5, betray the group and kidnapping certain ugly and dumb woman, so the council were being furious and hunt him, then the story revolves around the hunt, the identity of each Number, the women that kidnapped, the government military and some political issue. Pretty hard theme if I could say.
Anyway, this manga is a very good one, being rich in art and story, maybe differ on taste for each reader, you could either love it or hate it.
this is really very good. original storyline. and i mean the line and the story. besides that the art is great too. matsumoto is largely influenced by french comics like moebius. i say for the better. people with narrow-minded manga-opinions may not appreciate it to the fullest. this is for the seinen public probably.
