Description
Jin, a mysterious kid with a halo carved in his hand, and extraordinary fighting skills, lives with his grandfather in a beggar's community. In other place, the old scientist Amagi is searching for professor Kanzaki, to ask him for the whereabouts of the "player" -a kind of genetic altered humans- Zet, which they created some years ago. Soon, Jin and his grandfather are attacked by a mysterious man who turns into a monster.
The connection between professor Amagi and professor Kanzaki, seems to connect also young Jin to the mystery of the "players" and Zet.

Mixed feelings

Well….where should I start. First and foremost, I think this manga doesn´t quite reach the expectations I once held. After hearing of how “awesome” and how big of a “masterpiece” it is, I decided to give it a shot. And well…without sugarcoating it, I´m quite disappointed. Don´t get me wrong, I´m not saying it´s bad, I´m just saying it isn´t necessarily good.

So far I love the plot and some of the characters may have flaws (I´m not a big fan of Kouga, but I can quite grasp what the author tried to portray him as after reading further in the manga, so he isn´t that much of an annoyance anymore) . What I hate though, and this is a matter of taste, is the romance. I´m not a fan of romance in Seinen manga, and ´m absolutely not a fan of it when it´s this kind of plot. It´s annoying and it is unnecessary. Feels like the author put girls in the manga for the Ecchi, which explains the amount of boobs and rape attempts we get to see. But that´s a matter of taste as I mentioned before.

Either way as it seems now, I may continue reading it.

Did I read it wrong? Spearsmen, most of the time I agree with your opinion, but to call Video Girl AI or I"s being masterpiece, I cannot disagree more. Here I come to tell people that the mangaka made some kind of revolution with his works. This piece, that is Zetman, is totally masterpiece. Way better than the two I mentioned earlier. "Its like going from 2 to 8 on the scale of 10." And if I may add, still much more better than your so called Gantz. Perhaps this is because the mangaka was let free to design its development, unleashing the genius in him.

Best to note, "Despite its complex development, the characters retain their charms. You will read shits befall on all the important characters, which in time made you understand why them being themselves. Pretty fucked up their lives are, but pretty envious how their personality later turned up."

Oh, if you happen to be too stressed reading this manga, the cuter series -- that is Ratman -- of the same theme might cheer you up. Cheer!

at first, like the first 40ch or so i am completely lost. why this, why that, what the hell just happen? but as the story progress and i get to see farther and farther into the landscape i appreciate the intricately made storyline. this manga have weird flow, it jump and stop where i thought it shouldn't but if you bear with it you can get what it mean in the end. i like the different character design, so somehow i can differentiate between characters which is quite rare these days. sometimes the posing is a bit too much, the expressions a bit too crazy, but this is seinen after all. i'm not into jin's struggle so i think kouga really help in making me feel a bit attached to this manga - he is so stupid and naive, but in the end his heart is in the right place.
this is worth a read.

"2 Year later" reply at "krosko"

Dude, just because you don't understand the premise of the rape scene(s) doesn't mean it was useless. Zetman is a very dark SEINEN! The rape was supposed to teach Kouga the darkness of the REAL world. Since the real world is not pretty. I can't even believe that you said that Zetman's story was "so poorly developed". It was developed in a fantastic way! I wonder what your idea of "good" storytelling is. I do admit that Zetman does lack in ways because of Kouga(since he's a complete and utter justice freak and an idiot) and his arc. I can't believe that you said he should just be an artist and NOT an author. It's obvious that you didn't read any other mangas that Masakazu Katsura has written. I's and Video Girl Ai were MASTERPIECES.
Anywho, Zetman is an amazing manga no doubt. It's just that Kouga is one of the most despised characters in the manga even though he's supposed to be Jin's sidekick.

I hate Konoha

(I apologize for my horrible english) I don't know why - maybe 'cause she's so "cute", "pure" and girly. Usually being girly doesn't bother me but Konoha pisses me off. And I like Kouga because he's nice, funny when he talks about justice and it's so moving to see that he's Jin's only friend even though he's so differen't from Jin. He tries to be something... bigger than human. I'm glad Jin hook up with Hanako because both Hanako and Jin want to have "a family". And the Art style is more than awesome, just look how delicately drawn zetman is!

Thought evoking

Though i'm only up to chapter 60, i still feel adamant about this story's potential. I highly recommend it not for its art, or its storyline, but rather for what Kastura is trying to convey. While the true storyline is about a boy (Jin) with supernatural powers that fights for justice, Kastura doesn't jump right into the 'superman' glory. Instead, he writes out the struggles and problems he faces before he reaches his true glory. And what is even more pleasant is how Kastura tries to portray the difficulties Jin's rival faced during his adolescence.

Even amidst all the gore and nude women, the author still strikes out at the reader with the flaws in the heroes' ideology. What is justice? How do we decide what is right and what is wrong? Initally, we see two opposing sides where everything is black and white, however as the story progresses, we all see one common similarity between both the heroes and the 'players' and that is the search for belonging.

The author portray the struggles of the rich and the difficulties of the poor, however, characters from both social classes all crave for someone's love. Once they lose that, the traumatic circumstances these characters experience give them the impetus to protect those around them. Once again, I highly recommend this manga to those who deem themselves to be mature enough to handle the gore and the nudity, for without a critical mind, you ultimately lose the true meaning of the story Kastura conveys.

Dull at times, promising at times

I like the art. but the story has problems. I'm early in but it's the job of the mangaka and the manga to put something entertaining even in the early volumes.

The fights are bland and nothing interesting happens with the main character usually use pure brawn(all the while nothing interesting happens!).

The manga doesn't linger when it should. I didn't feel sorry for the character as a kid, or even think he had it rough, it just wasn't well told. And some reviews mention the great characters but the manga doesn't linger enough on them to get any feeling for their personalities. Only the wannabe hero seems interesting, a similar to two characters in shadow lady. Though the tragic story of the hero's caretakers is done well.

This manga-ka should really consider doing a tech hero like those three, he seems to do a better job with them.

Update: Again Kouga, the wannabe hero is the stand out for me. His doesn't win by just powering up, and he's facing some real existential issues with trying to marry heroics with the harshness of reality. That is classic superheroing. People who don't get superheroes don't get how its all about stuff like this. The manga becomes interesting to me when it focuses on him, and slows down a bit.

Zetman is an extremely brilliant manga. It's kinda like Devilman. Jin is a really good character. Kouga is a good character too.I like all his justice talk. I don't know why people don't like Kouga.

This manga has its ups and downz. The good part is Jin is a great character and i really do sympathise with his struggles. Honestly the whole manga should focus on him. However then there is Kouga the supposed hero of justice or wateva who I absoluetly loathe. He is one of the most irritating characters out. Yet the manga so far has dedicated 30 or so chapters to him which is the major fault of this manga for me. Hopefully it will get better and stop focusing on Kouga, I just wish that he just dies. His idealistic views and his stupid notion about justice just pisses me off. So annoying.

I mean that in a good way. Devilman is a favorite of mine. If this manga was a comic book being done in the U.S. by say, Marvel, and if Devilman had been brought out by DC, somebody would be suing someone.
